I don't get the venom with regard to these pictures...

I also don't follow the decisions by some to move to Android if this is the new iPhone...

Hell, the Galaxy SIII looks a whole lot like my nasty Samsung Omnia II from 2009 - only with a larger screen and thinner...

...which is what Apple appears to be offering - thinner and larger screen while keeping with a certain design signature..

People like to make wild remarks that's all.

Just think of all those people who said they'll move out of the US if Bush got reelected or Obama is elected or reelected and give it a few more months if romney gets elected.

Hardly any of them moved out. Celebrities got the most press on this with Bush. They all still living in the US.

These who claim they'll be going to android will likely be going OMG its the greatest thing ever once Apple shows it off.

Please look how rough the metal has been milled, no consumer product is finished like this. Also it seems the white version has been anodized like the black one, just not in the color white. This is possible. So judging by how rough the finish is on the inside this isn't a definite design. It is very possible that the final version will be anodized and painted in the color white.

anyone think that the metal portion on the back is for wireless charging?

Now that would be a feature I'd upgrade for in a second. It may also be for NFC:

Mastercard/Paypass to be NFC partner with Apple on iPhone 5?

Don't forget, Ed McLaughlin, who heads emerging payments at MasterCard, had an exchange with Fast Company that went as follows:

…when asked to give an estimate for when smartphone payments would become commonplace (in other words, would 2012 be the year of NFC or contactless tech?), McLaughlin demurred–and may have dropped a hint about Apple’s future in the industry.

“The timeline is always as rapid as it makes sense for consumers,” he says. “That’s a combination of having a critical mass of the merchants, which is what you’re seeing right now, and getting devices into the hands of consumers. I don’t know of a handset manufacturer that isn’t in process of making sure their stuff is PayPass ready.”

Japan and other nations have been using NFC tech in mobile devices for quite a while, using them for store and vending machine purchases.

MicroUSB can't do video out and other functions; The dock connector is [much] more than just a charging port.

Like a dock connector to hdmi and dock connector - I don't believe even USB 3.0 can do that.

Now one wow possibility - is a micro thunderbolt connector - only problem ARM's cpu don't support thunderbolt - dreaming maybe one day iPhone will use low power Intel CPU's

The black is pretty nice looking.

The design must serve some new purpose other than the antenna though. Either new accessories, wireless charging, or something else. It's not purely aesthetic.

Top: Wireless
Bottom: NFC?

It can't be all Aluminum or the signal won't go through, it can't be all glass or it will break, it can't be all plastic or people will call it cheap. So they did hybrid.

Some guys have that problem!

Sadly, I'm not interested in a longer iPhone.

They don't want things carried in their pockets to make anything look small. The rest of us don't have that problem.

Calling the design 'amazing' aside, I'm ok with what you say here. The other poster said an increase in width would make the phone 'massive'. Completely off base and pure hyperbole.

I wouldn't say massive? I think an extra 3 to 5 mm wouldn't hurt?
But I won't get so wound up about the design as considering last years total iPhone redesign rumours were bogus, and I thought the pictures of the iPhone 4 were ugly, then I saw one in the flesh and that was me sold!

Longer=Bigger battery

Battery will be bigger. Breaks in the aluminum are for antenna reception. Cool.....but I am going to try on the Samsung Galaxy S3. I am very interested to find out if the S3 can do the equivalent of Airplay, which I use a lot. Nothing wrong with my Ip4. Just getting a little bored.

Just tweeted ID team member Eugene Whang (@publicrelease) to see if this is legit. I'm sure he won't bite but it's worth a try. :D

nothing like this ? :(

This looks stunning. Why did this get downovoted to -35? This site is full of weirdos...

If that's the new iPhone as on page one (doubt it), it looks like utter uninspired crap.

I wish stop having information on the ARM based toys ( iPhone, iPad, Android... ) and get information on next real machine - like new MacBook Pro and Air's

I don't think it's tall. If the speaker and rear camera apertures are the same size as on the 4S, then the phone is about 2.625" wide, and the bezels together are about 0.1875", so that leaves room for a screen that is nearly 2.5" wide, which would give a vertical dimension of nearly 3.75", assuming that the aspect ratio is preserved. I can't see the screen being taller than that.

The brushed aluminum plate on the back makes it look tall because the strips on the top and bottom that are made of plastic do not correspond with the front opening for the screen, if you look at the antenna band on the left side of the white open case.

Though the case appears slightly wider, I don't think this is a change in the aspect ratio of the screen; I think that's an effect of the camera angle. The overall height of the phone appears to be identical to the 4S. With a narrower bezel, a slight increase in overall width of the phone and an increase in the percentage of the phone's height that is occupied by the screen, it appears that Apple may be able to squeeze a 4.3 to 4.5" screen into the case in the pictures.

To maintain retina resolution, the new iPhone (no, I'm not claiming that it will be called that, but who knows?) would likely have either 1.25 or 1.5 times the resolution of the 4S. The latter would be an easier multiplier, making it 3 times the resolution of the 3G and 4, but would require a higher pixel density.
