its interesting reading what Tim tells us in the D10 conference....

indirectly:
Siri will get much better in the next months...stay tuned...
with facebook there is something really big coming...
there is a completely new product line coming ...

He also confirmed the Gorilla Glass and emphasized the no fragmentation / one-screen size advantage.
Little misdirection perhaps?

okay, it's a controlled leak...
im sure ...
"We're going to double down on secrecy on products. I'm serious!"

how to double down on the actual apple product secrecy?
think of it...

i believe they spend a lot of money for that...
why don't produce a "thing" like we see on our "leak pictures" to make everybody believe this is the new iPhone? and than come out with a entirely other design?

Could be a way to find out leakers. Or with what happened with the iPhone 4 they're giving testers bogus phones just in case some dumb arse leaves it in a bar again.

...I think it makes more sense than a top-positioned jack. Handier to slide into a pocket with headphones attached. Headphone cable does not drape across the screen when you're trying to use it. The iPod touch had it right.

Agreed. The iPhone just didn't have room at the bottom before with two speakers - and the only way I can see it getting room is with a smaller port as depicted. But yes, jack on the bottom would be a godsend, the top one makes absolutely zero sense...

AND moving it to the bottom means they can use the top spot for the integrated lighter :D. Then there's just the electric shaver to go!

As far as we know security at Apple is better than ever.

And, we have a history of them sending take-down notices when real images are leaked--going back at least three generations of phones now.

We have more people than ever interested in doing fakes and mock-ups. It's a really weird phenomenon, but they're very common and increasingly difficult to discern from the real thing.

Counterfeit electronics are also commonplace these days. Of course, model numbers, FCC IDs, and functioning displays are the hardest to fake...this reported leak seems to have the easy to fake stuff, but is noticeably lacking the hard to fake stuff.

We know that Apple historically will do a beta release for their upcoming iOS months ahead of phone release, and that a yearly update would put the phone release in the fall (so probably only now going into production and very unlikely to have been shipped to suppliers)

On the other hand, these look really good and appear consistent with rumors.

Don't believe the hype.

this will not be the released version of the phone. Apple will not do away with the 30 pin.
IIRC, the EU is pressuring Apple to do away with it.

Besides which, it doesn't bother Apple if users have to buy new accessories to fit their new iPhone.

And a smaller connecter makes room for the speaker/headphone jack on the bottom, which makes more sense anyway, which is why Apple moved it there on the iPod Touch.

It's probably been suggested in this giant thread, but perhaps the metal band on the back is for inductive charging?
That, and increased rigidity and durability.

I took rough measurements in Photoshop and determined rough ratios and compared them against my iPhone 4. I'm seeing the physical width of the iPhone being the same but the height is bigger to accommodate the taller screen.
This is surely a design compromise by Apple to keep the "thumb" ease of use but bowing to the need of a bigger screen.
Personally I really wish the iPhone went to 4.5 or 4.7" inches and kept the aspect ratio the same (i.e.: the phone gets wider and taller) and surely to LTE.
The Galaxy S3 is looking really sexy in terms of hardware though. I'm not relishing the thought of maybe moving to Android but I'm intrigued with more flexibility there since I'm a jail breaker on each iPhone I get. That I cannot live without (I have my reasons).

Considering these parts are leaking now just like the iPad 3 parts did about 3-4 weeks before it came out my money is on a June (WWDC?) announcement and not October. I think the iPhone 4S October delay was based on the GSM/CDMA consolidation and Apple is back on the regular June/July release cycle. Finished parts like these don't leak 5 months in advance...
If these are genuine, then I agree that this will probably come out by the end of the summer.

WRT screen size, my very rough measurements (taking into account the angle between the camera lens and the cases, and using the Home button and the speaker and camera apertures as reference points for size comparison), suggested a slightly wider phone with the same height, but smaller bezels and a screen that proportionally occupied more of the phone's height, and a screen with a similar aspect ratio to the current iPhone, with a screen size between 4.3 and 4.5 inches. Now if Apple can squeeze about 384 ppi into a display that is 2.5" wide and 3.75" high, then the resolution can be a convenient 1440 X 960. Otherwise, if the PPI are the same as the 4S, then a screen of this size would have a 1200 X 800 resolution, which could cause a few problems with the rendering of some apps (although this could be solved by running them in a window rather than full screen).

Wow does the white look awful. The black is pretty cool looking, but the white version just looks awkward.

I think they're getting this right by having two every opposite looks. The white and chrome is fun apple bling, and the all-black is a mysterious, super sleek non-brand.

why is the bottom pieces different? or is this another piece on the white one?

Does no one else think that maybe the aluminum is touch-capacitive? Maybe its not Alum, but a different type of metal used to sense your grip on the phone. It's a bit of a stretch, but incorporating touch/swipe/finger gestures on the back of the phone, perhaps? Didn't Apple file a patent for this not to long ago?

Although I don't think the white looks great, the black is pretty sexy. While I don't want to believe the legitimacy of these photos, if they are the real thing, I still have faith in Apple. Steve had his finger in this pie.

I too remember the iPhone 4 leaks, and man were people freaking out. Then once Steve pulled the phone out of his pocket, everyone shut up and just said, "Oooooooooh."

Now there's a rumor I remember seeing before the iPhone 4 was introduced, although the rumor was that the rear glass panel would cover a rear touch sensor. I think this would be a very Apple-like thing to do.

Yes, there is another piece. The only question is whether the piece is on both black and white models, or on white only to prevent bleeding of light around the edge of the screen (a problem they previously had to work around with white models).

Just out of curiosity, do you see the difference between:

(1) This product is useful and does its job with an economy of purpose and form, this is a good thing
(2) This product makes me feel like I'm not a banal plebe, heh, look how great I am for buying this product, now I feel better about myself

If you don't see the difference, that would explain your post.

Yes, exactly. The irony in your post is that Apple is the king of trying to "shore up" people's self esteem by selling them on the idea that buying their products means they are smarter, happier people. They completely engage in tactic number 2.

The iPhone 4S (which I am currently using, somewhat begrudgingly) is kind of a disaster of design. It is NOT a joy to use. It has pretty "uncomfortable" corners, features text on web pages that is commonly much too small to read, and has an extremely fragile back. iOS 5 and iCloud are backwards, and poorly functioning. It does look nice sitting there though.

But people who own them tend to think they have superior taste, and are just generally superior people. Of course, none of that is true. I just thought it was funny that you said that very quote to defend Apple, when they are by far the most guilty of being offenders.

They both kind of look photoshopped

I think they are real. Here's why: About a month ago the supposed home button for the iPhone 5 was leaked which had a new shape, rounded squared much like an app icon on the home screen. If you look at the 2nd picture which shows the internals, the cut out for the home button seems to mimic that rounded square shape of the new home button. I can't believe nobody has noticed this yet. If somebody mentioned something, I may have missed it.

Surely if it has the same top-and-bottom antenna bands as the iPhone 4S (you can see the "dividers" on the edge) then the little glass panels on the top and bottom of the back are provided to let the signal out more easily? They match up very well with the antenna dividers.

It looks great to me, but so did the 4s, I suppose I'm just a fan of that sardine can shape :)

So if I got this right so far - iPhone 5:
- Aluminum backing with black or white top and bottom pieces with front glass same color (respectively).
- Headphone jack is now located on the bottom of the device, alongside a new USB charging and docking plug (no more apple dock).
- FaceTime camera is better and centered.
- iPhone 4 form factor with aluminum surround.
- New, bigger & better speakerphone and microphone mesh on the bottom.
- Better rear camera with flash located further away and dedicated rear facing microphone.
- 4+" screen with 5th row for apps.
-Comes out September 2012.

Will be updated as new information is obtained?

A good summary, and all to my liking :)

I dewarp the 9to5mac shot by using circles on the camera lens and on the rounded corners and mixed it with the versus io picture: they match

the screen is exactly 4" after calibrating my notebook screen on versus io.

but for my feeling either the screen is too small or the case too large. looking at the case the bezel should be much thinner than on previous iphones. opinions?

I've pasted the screen on the body:

It seems as if the screen is closer to the edge than with the 4/4S.

And is the metal border on the black casing darker than on the white casing? It seems that way.

When I look at the leaked pictures I do not think the front panel looks 16:9 ratio whereas these mock ups are showing to be so.

Anyone else think the same? I mean to me it looks 4:3

Either that or the mock ups are showing far in excess of 16:9 more like 20:9 !!

The headphone jack at the bottom make SO much more sense. A very welcome improvement.

OK, I gotta ask... Why?

I mean, what's the problem with it being on the top? Every audio player I've owned from the Walkman through to the iPod has had the headphone jack on the top?

When you have your earphones plugged in and are selecting tracks etc the cable has always felt awkward coming from the top considering the phone is at a downward angle and you are shortening the cable, by having the earphone jack at the bottom the cable is the shortest distance from your ears and feel naturally comfortable.

I think ergonomically it makes sense, aesthetically i'm not too sure.
