"Carlj said: I'm calling it here - it'll be the "9E". Best of both worlds. ;)"

Well, 9e does make about as much sense as 10r lol. So i wouldn't be suprised if Apple did something like that.

Personally, I would be happy with that. 4 GB should be plenty sufficient, really any additional ram would probably be only to support something like the more advanced camera the ‘Pro’ has.

I doubt it has as much ram as their flagship model, my guess is 3.

If they do call it 9, I wonder if this is their way of elegantly ending the 6 form factor line since obviously a new iteration won't work (10's already taken). Or if they do plan on making a successor to the 9, what will they then call it? Bring back the 'r' moniker? (for example 13R, etc).

So what's it gonna be? The iPhone 9 or iPhone SE?

I hope Apple chooses none of those names because they're terrible, especially if they call it the SE, as the phone will be nothing like the SE.
This iPhone naming scheme has gotten downright silly in general. Why does every model need a new name? They don't call MacBook Pros "MacBook Pro 13 SE Plus" or whatever. It's just "MacBook Pro," and if you need to distinguish it further, you do so by size (MacBook Pro 15") or year (MacBook Pro 2017).

I think this new device should just be called "iPhone" much like the base model iPad is just "iPad" and the base model AirPods are just "AirPods."

8s, 9, 9s. Done every other year, that could go on for 6 years. But, yeah, this is probably the last of the 6/7/8 line.

This is wrong, in addition to latest A9 the og SE had flagship main rear camera, with 4k and every other feature. RAM was importantly 2 GB as well, same as 6s, up from 1 GB on 5s/6. Basically everything that really matters was flagship level. Reason why it still holds up and one can upgrade from SE to SE hehe.
I stand corrected about the camera! =)
I think the original SE was a very competent phone (Jonny Ive’s voice: “a distillation of what was achievable in the iPhone 5/5S chassis”) 😂
I expect the same of this gen SE... I think it’ll be roughly between the XR & the 11 performance-wise, and would almost bet on the same 3gb of RAM as the XR.

If one is self-isolating and purchases this (or any) iPhone, how does (s)he activate it without going to a store? Ditto to pass along an existing phone to another person.

Asking for a friend. 😐

On T-Mobile and AT&T, you put SIM card in and the phone just works.

I don’t expect it to have anything in common with XR which will get discontinued this year. This new SE however will be sold by Apple for a long time into the 5G era, even after the 11 gets discontinued. So I’m pretty sure it will have the latest guts, including iPhone 11’s primary camera and RAM. Selfie camera might be not as nice though

I am in only in if double SIM supported. Changed for that from iPhone 6 to 300 euro Android and since not disappointed with putting 300 euro every 2 years for updating to the top Android OS version.

OK, so here is the most first-world-problem post of them all!

Assuming the details of the rumors we've heard so far are true, there's essentially a black, silver and product(RED) version. So WHAT COLOR AM I GOING TO GET????

(1) I am not a fan of the phones with the white fronts. I like that on a black front, when the screen is off it looks like one continuous sheet of glass, and not a screen within a frame. It kind of looks that way when the screen is on, honestly, especially in Dark Mode.

So the silver is probably out. In fact it's almost definitely out. The product(RED) iPhone 8 had a black front, so that's potentially in!

(2) I used to care what color the body was when I didn't use cases. One of the (smaller) reasons I loved my blue iPhone 5c so much (I am catching up on the Netflix show Grace and Frankie, and it's a little thrill each time Jane Fonda picks up her phone). But now that I use a case I generally don't care...

BUT...

The case I am hoping to get is one that looks like a baseball, with stitching and everything. Assuming the SE/9 takes iPhone 8 cases. And this case might expose the sides just a little bit. So any flashes of red would go with the red stitching. To take that to its logical conclusion I should get a white-fronted phone, but rule (1) takes precedence.

(3) Red is not my usual color though. That's blue. My GIRLFRIEND'S color is red. Her iPad has a red cover, mine a blue. Her iPhones traditionally have red-accented cases, mine otherwise. Am I bogarting my partner's color? Hmmm...

So it's down to black (excuse me, "Space Gray" maybe) and product(RED). What to do, what to do, what to do...

I'm an adult, I shouldn't be thinking this hard about this. But I haven't purchased a new phone in four years, and who knows it might be another four years before my next one. Could be my only phone purchase in an eight-year span! I'm allowing myself to be a little giddy.

Order both colours, then decide and send the not used one back to Apple.

You know, (STEREOTYPE ALERT!) as a man that never occurs to me. But of course that's a perfectly good suggestion.

But really this is a mental exercise. I'm sure that red would look a little better than gray...but it may come down to my partner's feelings on the matter. One of those little considerate niceties that companions do for one another from time to time.

Could be today honestly. People could use a distraction.

A ‘silent release’ with this specific phone won’t cause much of a marketing distraction, but, it does provide a cheaper alternative solution for someone that perhaps needs to upgrade their phone given the economic conditions. That’s what I would consider actually a positive distraction.

I see the occasional "this phone will fail because who is thinking of buying phones right now?", but what you've posted makes sense to me. Heck, I *am* one of those, and I had been saving money to purchase this specific phone, which has been rumored to be coming for months.

(That I know about the rumors makes me less representative of the market, perhaps.)

If anything, a lower-cost phone is the *best* phone to release right now.

My guess would be somewhere around 10am PT or so. That would be a normal time for one of Apple's mid-week product announcements, no?

No, the SE had the A8/2GB and the rear camera of the 6s, but I’m terms of flagship level, that’s about it.

Compared to the 6s, the SE didn’t have 3D Touch/Taptic Engine, the TouchID was the much slower first generation and the front camera was 1.2MP (6s was 5MP). The WiFi doesn’t support MIMO and there’s no barometer either.

But it was a low-cost iPhone, so nothing wrong with omitting higher-end features. The rear camera is important to many, and it had A9/2GB, which means even four years later it still performs well. Hopefully it gets iOS 14, I think it (and the 6s) will but who knows.

I'll corroborate that, if needed. Slower TouchID, no 3D Touch, but it had the A9. I didn't remember if it had the 5S camera or the 6S camera, but what you're saying makes sense.

And ditto on your last paragraph. It was a really really good phone in any context, and an awesome one for the money.

The SE has the A9 2 GB chip (thats how it runs iOS 13) and the 6s camera (with 4K) and all. The WiFi does support MIMO (433 Mbps), though LTE is limited to 150 Mbps.

Hm, well I guess there is at least this contemporary reference:

iPhone 6S vs. SE comparison at TrustedReviews.com

They agree with Tekguy0 about the camera being the same. Same capabilities, anyway, including 4K video. So that's good. So I wonder what we would get as a camera; an 8 or something the size of the 8 engineered like the 11?

Either way, I'd be making a big upgrade over my SE. Perhaps I'll be more willing to use my phone instead of my DSLR for more shots.

Two official product announcements today so far (13.4.1 and Clips). Building up to something?

You’re right that the SE doesn’t have LTE Advanced, but no, the WiFi doesn’t support MIMO.

Then how does it support N-433 WiFi? I thought the maximum without MIMO was 150 Mbps.
