My gutsy guess, iPhone 9/SE2 will have 4GB RAM.
That IS gutsy! I think it'll be 3GB but I'm rooting for yours!

Agreed, but it doesn’t matter why. The top-end iPhone when the SE was released was the 6S. I would argue the correct comparison now is the surely the 11 Pro if the debate is how much it deserves to be called ‘special’.
That's an interesting point about the top end. To be fair, though, the product line wasn't split like it is now at that time, so it's not really apples-to-apples. But your point did make me think about that.

If this turns out to be an 8 with an A13 (and the capabilities that an A13 adds, like Night Mode, not just speed) for $400 (probably $450 for the tier I'd get) then that's plenty special for me! Every four years or so to jump forward to the latest processor (for a few months, anyway) for under $500? I like that.

Should call it the iPhone SE2020. Simple and means something.

If it has 4gb ram I'm in.

Calling the expected low-cost upgraded iPhone 8 the iPhone 9 would make much more sense than calling it the SE, IMHO. I mean if the name is to be purely attached to the low cost, call it the iPhone LC! Being (as rumoured) lower-spec than the current top-end spec iPhone in every single way is not my idea of a ‘special edition’.

The SE was special, in part, because at launch it actually had few compromises from the then-top end iPhone, the 6S (basically smaller screen size/quality, but that was kinda the point... and no 3D Touch), and I believe actually out-performed it in some ways.
We must be reading different rumors!!

Every single article I’ve read suggests to expect an A13, same as the 11/11 Pro.
The original SE was impressive for having current gen processor on a much cheaper phone; all the other specs (camera, etc.) were a tier below the flagship of the time.
That sounds like near precisely the case this time around.
Think of it like this:
The 5 series got a Second Edition a few generations after the new 6/7/8 body style came out, a nice update for those that liked the previous form factor or simply wanted something cheaper.
Now, a few generations after the X form factor has been out... again we see a Second Edition of the previous form factor for those that prefer the previous body style, or are cost driven.

Someone knows if iPhone 7/8 case (Griffin Survivor Extreme Duty Case) fits the new iPhone SE/9?

I'm hoping they do, because that means lots of cases already available. And you would think they would, if this is truly "an A13 in an iPhone 8".

BUT...

One of the rumors from the last couple of months suggested that the body of the New SE is ever so slightly thicker than the body of the 8. If memory serves it was 0.5mm thicker. Would half a millimeter ruin the fit of a case? In most cases, probably not. But if the rumor is true, does that mean that there might be other external differences, since there would already be one? Possible.

Frankly, I think it's more likely that this truly is an 8 on the outside, which means I would expect regular 8 cases to fit. I hope.

I find it quite amazing how many people actually care what they name it.
Just an outlet for nervous excitement! Back in 1991 I bought a Performa 6416! 6416??!! What were they thinking??!! Is the new iPhone out yet????!!!!

Thanks for the reply. If the regular 8 case fits the iPhone SE/9, there will probable be a run on these cases and a price increase aswell.

Yeah, that might be. That's assuming that in the short term there is a high demand for the phones themselves, which with the current world situation has to be a big unknown.

Believe I read somewhere that the number 9 is considered a number to avoid due to its meaning in some cultures. Could that be why Apple jumped from iPhone 8 to iPhone 10? I'd prefer "iPhone" as this will be the basic or entry model. We'll see news soon, I hope.

If you‘re still purchasing SIM-locked phones and worry how you‘d get your new iPhone activated without going to a carrier’s physical store you‘re doing this while capitalism and free market thing wrong.
Asking for a friend: It’s 2020, SIM-locked phones are still a thing?!
Next thing you tell me is you have contracts you can’t quit whenever you feel like it.

If one is self-isolating and purchases this (or any) iPhone, how does (s)he activate it without going to a store? Ditto to pass along an existing phone to another person.

Asking for a friend. 😐
You make sure you have a SIM card in your phone, turn it on, and you set it up. No need to be at a store at all.

Why do you need to activate your phones in a store? I am in the UK and activating new phones at home is normal??
Right now you can't activate it in a store. Well, not in an Apple Store. You can go to some food store to activate it, but people will think you are weird. At home is best. On your balcony or in your garden, maybe.

i like the iPhone 9 name just to give the entire line a completion but it will give the impression it is an older phone because it will sound like a few generations behind. If that's the case why is Apple still selling the iPhone 8? I feel if the consumer is looking for an iPhone and wants a touch ID/familiar form factor they are going to purchase the iPhone 9 regardless if it sounds older

This is wrong, in addition to latest A9 the og SE had flagship main rear camera, with 4k and every other feature. RAM was importantly 2 GB as well, same as 6s, up from 1 GB on 5s/6. Basically everything that really matters was flagship level. Reason why it still holds up and one can upgrade from SE to SE hehe.

in the US, almost every iPhone upgrade I ever got was an OTA activation for something like the past 5 years.

Once the IMEI number is in the provider's system as linked to your account, it self activates when powered on.

I would love an iPhone that features the form factor of the iPhone SE as well as an oled display and slim bezels like the X. An iPhone SE X so to say! 😜

I rather they call it iPhone SE than iPhone 9. Using the number 9 seems a little backwards at this point.

Yeah, iPhone 9 is a step backwards to be sure, however I think it makes more sense to call it that than the SE or SE 2. My reasoning being that it's much more like the next iteration of the 6/7/8 form factor than it is the original SE factor and hence '9' makes more sense from a marketing standpoint. My 2 cents anyways.

Plus, if they call it the 9 we can finally put this SE 2 nonsense to bed.

No one outside of Apple knows. There are only guesses until it's revealed. The odds are likely that it will, though, because letting them reuse all the tooling for the 6/7/8 line is a big part of what keeps the costs down on this lesser-priced model.
