Willing to bet those who buy the less expensive iPhone models don't go out and upgrade their phones every year like those of us who buy the Pro models. If they upgraded to the 13 last year, they probably won't be buying the 14 this year.

The thing is, we now live in interesting times. Especially if you're closer to Ukraine than the US is.

So my explanation is that a lot of people are simply not upgrading their phones because they don't see why spending money on a new phone is a good idea right now.

Then what do you have left? Those who MUST have the latest and greatest shiny. They already have 13s and they want something that's an upgrade. Only the Pro models qualify.

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus exist primarily to sell the iPhone Pro models. The low-end models help people who are willing and able to spend a bit more money justify buying the more expensive Pro models.
Precisely. And the others that buy the cheaper models don’t know, or couldn’t care less about what chip is in it. They’ll mostly be buying the larger model for a larger screen at a cheaper price.

This feels like the XR all over again. Initially, there were reports of low demand/poor sales, and people were saying who'd want that, should get the XS instead...but the XR ended up being the best selling smartphone that year.

Not saying the 14/14 Plus will be the best selling phone, but the 14 Plus isn't even out yet. It's too early to see how they'll sell over time.

Well of course. The iPhone 14 doesn’t offer anything new and people know it. That’s what happens when you don’t sell exciting new devices. If you’re gonna sell a cheap phone without improvements then you should expect for people to buy it only because they don’t have enough money. And why would people but a 512 gb iPhone 14 when they can go for the pro instead?
This. The 14 is really only an upgrade if you were on an iPhone 12 or lower.

I think once the standard iPhone 15 model adopts the dynamic island these numbers will improve next year. It may not be actually useful for many folks, but it symbolizes the new look of the screen. It's irrational I know, but iPhones with the notch are rapidly being perceived as "old". Even though the notch is actually less intrusive for video.

I had dinner with some friends who don't keep up on most all of this, but they do have plenty of disposable income and the couple both usually just "get the new phone each year"..

Both of them were different this year...

The main question I kept getting (as they know I do keep up on this) is...."what's different"? and "seems like the same phone basically"

They aren't upgrading

So if someone is coming from an iPhone 8 the 14 isn’t exciting and offers no improvements?

What does this mean for next year revs? They can’t shoot themselves in the foot twice? I suspect all models of the iPhone 15 will carry flagship design features and software with exception of the display, camera and finish. But A17, Dynamic Island and possibly RAM might be standard this time. Apple has got to realize people are holding onto these phones much longer. I don’t see many on 12, 13, 14 Pros all upgrading to the 15.
The Dynamic Island is coming to iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which will help them feel fresh and new. This single omission is reinforcing to consumers that with iPhone 15, you are paying $100 more for iPhone 14 with better cameras.

That's it- the phones have to be even bigger next year! (from a sad Mini owner)

Also, the 14s are more for casual buyers. They will shine over time as casual users come into an Apple store looking for "a phone" and they will love the bigger 14. I can't imagine people people were waiting for launch day were looking for a modest spec bump...the launch period buyers must skew towards the pro.

Also, not clear whether the pros are doing better... maybe this is a win for Apple driving more people to the more expensive phones.. If not, maybe they did make the difference between the two phones too much and they need to make a better adjustment. Time will tell, and Apple will adjust.

So if someone is coming from an iPhone 8 the 14 isn’t exciting and offers no improvements?

8 to 14 is an interesting example

Going from Touch-ID and nice grippable bezels to Face-ID and swipe/swipe/swipe interaction style isn't always a big win.

I have several older relatives who one day will be going to the SE as a result. They really need and depend upon the familiarity and ease of use with that home button and the edges they can get a hold of without touching active screen area.

A plastic spacer is a new feature 🤣

I seriously don't get everyone getting so upset or thinking this is some crazy situation. Not every country and carrier outside the US supports ESIM yet. Yes Apple could put pressure on them like they did in the US to adopt it, but I can also see Apple not wanting to do that with the Legislation in the EU and other countries over USBC and lightning, App store royalties, chargers no longer provided etc.

So until then it makes sense for them to just toss in a plastic spacer rather than change a logic board design for multiple countries. Each assembly line still gets their logic boards but the US one just has a box of spacers to put in.

What does it mean? People are selling their new iPhone 14 10 days after the purchase for 60% or the original cost?
No, it's just how much resellers are offering for one.
There is likely a very low volume of devices being sold, so you have to take those numbers with a huge grain of salt.

It's like valuing a collectible plate by finding a single seller on ebay asking $10,000 for it. That's not the actual value, unless there's multiple people buying at that price.

Likely this is a secondary effect. I think last year demand was bigger, so delivery times were longer. So a used one available "right now" was worth more than when you can just walk into an Apple Store and get one. I doubt it means more people are willing to sell theirs quickly.

With every new iPhone model there are more and more refurb models for a fraction of the price that are better alternatives for most smartphone users. IMO the only time there will be a spike in demand going forward is when a model has a killer feature across the entire line.. not just the most expensive model.

If the info is true, it means that customers are getting more savvy or just won’t tolerant subpar products anymore, but Apple likely new that they had to have the lower entry point for customers that don’t care too much about phones. Not sure if they expected that big of a drop in valuation of the 2nd hand market though.

I’m on the 12 pro max and this is the first time I haven’t upgraded after 2 years. I think 3 years is the new thing for me. hopefully the 15’s are something more
