I’m on the 12 pro max and this is the first time I haven’t upgraded after 2 years. I think 3 years is the new thing for me. hopefully the 15’s are something more
The Dynamic Island is pretty much an over it the first time you use it feature. But Apple is selling it as key differentiator considering its a minor feature overall. But just look at their ads for it, there is so much emphasis on that one design change.

What is the reason that dynamic island is only on the pro model?

Why isn't it offered on all the new iphone 14's?

When i see commercials, they only talk about the pro model and the island , guess that is the issue. not everyone needs that pro model and other than the dynamic island , no really good reason to upgrade unless u have a 3 yr old phone.
Or, like me, you’re coming back from Android.

I’m not sure the immediate resale market for new models is the best way of assessing demand.

If people want a 14 they’ll buy one new. If they want a used phone they’ll buy a 13 or older.

Here in the UK I haven't bought a high-priced tech item since iPhone 13 and I don't intend to during the rest of this tax year. Buying the 13 and the M1 Mac mini were no-brainers but these minor product changes and the worsening economic climate will see many of us sticking to what we already have. It was really my wife who should have upgraded her XS but she decided not to for the same reasons. This will be the first year that our tax returns will not feature a single significant piece of tech.

It really is rather odd..
I don’t think really anyone is going to care a lick about it either way ultimately…yet Apple is acting like it is some sort of massive feature and differentiator

Re-sell... even if you got it launch day, you can still return it for a full refund! Unless it's damaged, but then you'd of course be getting a smaller re-sell rate anyway. lol
Depends where you bought it from though - unless it's Apple, many retailers won't accept remorse returns on used phones.

I bought the 14 Pro Max 1TB, upgrade from 12 Pro Max 512GB. I know next year Apple will have some Amazing new design and it'll have the W9 chip or whatever that is mandatory for AR use. But YOLO.

Recession doesn’t impact people with more disposable income (who would probably be more likely to buy the Pro models)?
I don't know, I've seen a lot of people who couldn't really afford the Pro Max who got one anyway. Financing deals through carriers make it pretty easy to get just about anything.

The 14 is really only an upgrade if you were on an iPhone 12 or lower.

Exactly. iPhones don't change much year-to-year. There's never a need to buy a new iPhone every year.

Most people choose to keep their iPhones for 2-3 years anyway. Maybe 3-4 years now.

How do we know? Simple:

There are over 1 billion iPhones on Earth right now. But Apple only sells around 200 million new iPhones every year.

So clearly people are keeping their iPhones longer and upgrading less-frequently. If every iPhone user did buy a new iPhone every year... Apple would sell much more than 200 million every year. But they obviously don't.

And let's not forget that some iPhone sales are to people who are getting their first iPhone coming from Android.

Drop the non-pro phones. Too many iPhones. There's 8 different iPhones for sale right now, before you even consider storage options.
Why should people who don’t want pro features be forced to buy a more expensive phone. A lot of the people on this site think apple should only make the phone that fits their needs

exactly, all you see is the iphone 14 pro advertised. They put the dynamic island only on that to see if they can tempt people to pay for the higher end model. ugg , stick with my 12 mini for another yr

Yep. I had no intentions of ever really getting the Pro model anyway. I'm still using my 12, and judging by the fact that it still has 92% battery health, I think I'll be holding onto it for at least another year.

By the time I'm ready to upgrade, some of the Pro features that I care about will probably have been passed down the line anyway. The 120hz refresh rate and telefoto lens would be nice, but I just wasn't able to justify the price, and dynamic Island + A16 didn't really change that for me.

What does it mean? People are selling their new iPhone 14 10 days after the purchase for 60% or the original cost?

It’s the model I’m considering also. You can point to the advantages of the pro, but do any of them really change the usage? For me, I think the answer is no except maybe for telephoto zoom. But the pro is also annoyingly heavier. I’ll probably go to an Apple Store soon and compare side by side, but on balance, the regular 14 seems better for me.

Right? Especially since most retailers have 14-day return windows. Not sure why anyone would ever sell it within 10 days before returning it and getting the full value back.

I'm very confused - why would anyone sell their new device within the return window for 60% of the purchase price?

No, it's just how much resellers are offering for one.
There is likely a very low volume of devices being sold, so you have to take those numbers with a huge grain of salt.
Yea, it's a price offer, not a sign of people selling 14's. The resellers see the low demand, realize selling 14's will take time and attractive prices, and are basing tehir offers on that so they can still make a profit.

It was a mediocre upgrade and doesn't include the flagship feature of this year's iPhones. Even if branded as an iPhone 13s it seems mediocre. Not sure what Apple was expecting.

There are customers who don't care about the camera upgrade to the Pro, aren't fixated on the notch or dynamic island, and just want a phone to use as a phone, with some emailing and texting capability. The 14 is perfect for that and saves money by not buying features that add no value.

I noticed a lot of people who bought into it keep saying, give it a year first to really see the bigger picture. Yeah, managing player controls and timers is game changer. Things I can already do from my Apple Watch, which many people likely already have. All Dynamic Island really creates is more redundancy.

Too much segmentation. For years there was just an iPhone - it was always trying to be the very best phone on the market. 3 models really ought to be enough. 2 "best" phones with different sizes, and a single entry level phone for budget conscious consumers - the SE.

Because no one wants it. lol. People pay the upcharge for Pro models. Apple screwed any chance of selling this model when they delayed it 3 weeks from the other models.
Most people in the market for non pro phones don’t preorder or even buy at launch. The real proof of demand from the casual non techs crowd is how these phones sell once they are in stores

I wouldn't say there is too much segmentation, each phone in the lineup has a purpose. You have the regular 14, which is just the basic "it works" phone that suits most people. Then you have the 14 Plus for those who want a bigger phone but don't want to pay the full price for the Pro. Then you have a bunch of extra features on the Pro for those who want them.

I would have rather them just have implemented all of the Pro features on the regular 14, but Apple isn't going to do that. I'm just glad that they didn't raise the entry level price to $1,000, and because I don't like spending more money than I need to, the regular 14 fit for me.

Its possible to be honest and this is just speculation on my part, but internally the iPhone might actually be at a crossroads. Its becoming harder for them to find new frontiers with the device, for the past 15 years, it has already consumed most everything we would need a third party device for. The SoC itself, it is already showing that there is a zenith there. My iPhone X is still faster, groggy in some areas, but I probably just need to clear some caches and delete some apps.

Can they just please always keep a new Mini in the lineup?

Even if it doesn't sell bananas crazy, it has sold more than well "enough" and it's the only size that is even remotely attractive to many of us out here.

Ridiculous to have all these SKUs for nearly the same device overall

Sometimes I feel out of place on this forum. Replacement for the sake of replacement seems wasteful and simply dumb. I replace my devices when they get old or don't do something I need it to do. The not doing something I need it to do on my phone rarely happens for me. My last phone was an iPhone 8. My current one is an iPhone 13. Probably won't be replacing for a few years down the road. Same goes with my iPad Pro and my Macbook Pro.

I don't need bling. I need to get work done.
