I'd been holding off getting a MBP until the keynote, hoping there'd be an update, with hopefully a smaller 12"/13" screen. But after discovering there wasnt, I bought a 15" last night.

I need one for my work and can't wait any longer, but I can't see one coming out anytime soon anyway. Apple would have announced it yesterday, if so.

Actually, it has happened before recently although I can't quite remember when. I expect MacBook Pro updates quietly next Tuesday - to include processor bumps (to Penryn) and multi-touch, no announcement.

If so, you'll be able to take your back and exchange, or more likely you'll be delivered the new version. Steve Jobbs won't annouce it because its most likely not quite ready (as they were hard at work finalising the Air or whatever) or they didn't want to detract from the MacBook Air announcemnet. Penryn only just came out so it may not have been ready.

I'll be waiting and buying then. I should have my bonus by then :D

That would be great if so, as I'll be able to return it.

But, what makes you say next Tuesday? And how likely do you think it is?

Apple Apple Apple.... i wait for months and months for a new MBP expecting it waiting for it anticipating it.. getting up 1AM in the morning to watch MacRummors live coverage but then at Steve Jobs speech nothing, no update no change. :(:(:(

So i decided i better just buy it and was planning on doing so in the next week but then i hear this, more rummors more speculation and i am left with... Should i buy or should i wait?... as i have been left with for months.

But my problem is i need it no matter what by the end of January.. but it will hurt so much if on 2FEB an upgrade comes out.

Any comments?

buy something when it does what you want it to do and when you need it, pay no attention to rumors and speculation or you wait forever and never buy anything or end up unhappy.

That's my guess, too. Or at least no later than the end of February. Chances are, they'll just be speed bumps. Nothing major.

As for new displays, I'd expect to see those, as well as the Shake replacement, at NAB later this year.

In past years, haven't they updated other products in the weeks following the event? Minor speedbumps and so on running until February.

Chances of them announcing this any time other than yesterday are slim, but I've been holding out on buying a new PC in the hopes Apple would release a mid-range alternative to the Mac Pro.

There's a gaping void in their product line now that's just begging to be filled by a consumer oriented stand-alone tower in the neighborhood of $1500 that features a desktop version of the Core2Duo (w/ BTO options for Core2Quad), 2 or 3 GB standard Ram, GeForce 8800GT graphics, two large hard drives configured for data security RAID, a couple free expansion slots, and more USB ports than the skimpy 3 that are on the current iMac.

I've already switched over to a MacBook Pro laptop, but I just can't justify $3000+ for a well-configured Mac Pro (stock system is processor overkill but weak on graphics, Ram, and hard drive space), and I don't want to throw away $1500 on a disposable iMac that's little more than a laptop in a bigger case.

I agree. I'm a graphic designer, and I've always used the PowerMac to do my work. The Mac Pro is just overkill. I don't need 8 cores to run InDesign or even Photoshop.

My current machine is a 24in. iMac, which has been surprisingly great for me. I was a bit hesitant because of its disposability, but it's held up quite well, and frees up a lot of room on my desk.

Unfortunately, I don't see Apple releasing this 'mid range' tower, because they've positioned the iMac as the level just below the Mac Pro. The gap is actually between the Mac Mini and the iMac. And frankly, I'm not sure exactly what that product could possibly fill that gap.

If you're looking for something below the Mac Pro, I'd strongly suggest getting an iMac.

true dat .. i expect some further silent upgrades especially the mini going SR and then perhaps screens and with some distance (february) the pro books and perhaps imacs for not stealing the thunder of the macbook air

though the normal macbooks desperatly needs an upgrade too ... the whole line simply has to go superdrive for god's sake ... this is the year 2008

edit: an yeah the consumer midi tower simply is missing .. too bad that steve jobs won't sign such a thing
i know the day i buy a macbook to replace my aging G4 Mac mini he is going to release that thing in a surprise announcment

not again...

ive waited months for an update.
and i used macworld as the final straw now i hear this.
and its stopping me.
making me want to wait.

gaaah i want a macbook pro.

*bangs head*

Ugh! Just when I decide to bite the bullet on Saturday and order a new MBP to replace my current one, this rumor hits. Now I don't know what to do! I knooooow I should wait until the new ones come, but who knows how long that will take. And to add more dilemma, I'll be buying through EPP, but there's no telling how long it might take for the new ones to hit that store (and once the new ones ARE released, I won't be able to buy anything with that discount until the new ones DO hit).

So, I could buy now and sell it once the new ones are released and hit EPP, or I could just hang on to my current one until then.. but that could be 6 months for all I know. Of course if it turns out to be 6 months then buying now would be worth it, but if it turns out to be 3 weeks, not so much.

Oh crud. I hate Steve sometimes.

That's silly advice. Yes, buy now if you absolutely need it, but to just ignore speculation & trends could leave you just as unhappy. Oh, it's a sad day when someone puts down their hard-earned cash for the newest machine, gets it, opens the box, and wakes up the next morning to find they're already outdated. Sure, it doesn't make your machine any less functional, but it definitely decreases the bang for buck factor.

I hope they introduce new MBP's soon, I've already sold mine hoping they would introduce new ones at the keynote.

If you're looking for an "xMac" or "Mac" machine you'll have to get in line. There are a headache-inducing number of posts and threads on the subject already. Not that I disagree, but you've got one detail totally wrong.

RAID is a fool's errand for consumer machines. RAID is a great, cheap way to achieve high availability so that a machine doesn't completely die in the event of a hard drive failure. RAID is not a useful tool for data security or an alternative to backups. There's absolutely zero chance Apple would promote RAID on a consumer machine, especially now that they've got a much better solution in the form of Time Machine.

Oh please introduce the iMac Air! A .16-inch thin, .5-pound mac with 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 144MB of integrated graphics, and a 80GB 4200-rpm hard drive and no optical drive, one USB2 and no Firewire or ethernet ports and non-accessible 2GB memory! Oh and no speakers, internal or external, please. I'll pay $2500. It can even replace the Mac Mini line. Why not.

LOL! Nicely said!

It was just xmas 3 weeks ago. They don't want to piss a bunch of people off for going out and buying computers and iphones and then 3 week later those products get upgraded. NAB will most likely have more upgrades.

Don't you feel great that they didn't upgrade hardware in the iphone? I do, the software that they just released should of been on there from day one. Plus they still have a ways to go on the software side, before they do a major hardware update. Just my 2 cents.

...and if its the next day, they haul it back to the store and get the newer model for free.

...and if its the next day, they haul it back to the store and get the newer model for free.
....unless you've opened the box like I said in the scenario, in which case you haul it back to the store and pay a 10% restocking fee and then get the newer model (unless of course you're fortunate enough to get a forgiving manager that waives this, but certainly don't count on it).

...unless of course you BTO'd any options, in which case you cannot return your older model at all.

...and of course my "next day" analogy was simply a hyperbole. Anywhere within that first month is equally heartbreaking, IMO.

Edit: Damn I type too slow, MC! *shakes fist*
