I played with the message part of that last night - nifty.

definitely... been a bunch of times i wished i could swap the battery to a full one.

As for the FIND MY IPHONE and REMOTE ERASE FUNCTION.... got a question

1- if you wipe your data remotely, can you still find the iphone and track it? i would hate to have to choose between the two in order to protect your data or find a missing or stolen iphone.

Don't know...do you want to try? I can try but then I need to restore...

But if you get to the point where you want to wipe data you're not getting that phone back.

I consider myself a well educated man, but i have to admit i had never heard of the word oleophobic! Thank you, Apple, for enriching my vocabulary!

So basically there is a security backdoor for every iPhone phone that allows ATT/MobileMe to remotely turn on your location services, report your location and wipe your data if desired?

Sure hope the nefarious element doesn't find that power at all intriguing.

"If the iPhone or iPod touch is online (turned on and connected to a data network such as Edge, 3G, or Wi-Fi), information deletion begins within seconds, and a confirmation email that the remote wipe has begun is sent to your MobileMe email account.

If the iPhone or iPod touch is offline (not turned on or not connected to a data network), the information will be deleted the next time the device is online."

Look Kiddies! Big Brother...

AT&T, the company that manifested the Patriot Act into "black rooms" at local switch offices, now demos their greatest technology: instant complete tracking. Those un-numbered rooms full of highspeed switchers, that scrub our calls are now connecting to our devices like never before. This MobileME app is a nice demonstration of this tracking technology; linked to our personal lives via phone calls, text messages, emails, contacts and photos. Bang up thesis Big Brother! Someone else can make our lives easier, just show us where to sign.

My understanding is yes, you can. It only erases the data on the phone, not the OS.

The MobileMe features are awesome addons. I gave it a try last night and it worked like a charm. It could track my phone and the messages are very fast when sent to the phone. I'm thinking of trying the remote wipe to see how quick it works tonight. Right after I do a quick sync/backup of course .

i think you're failing to realize something, ATT ALREADY knows where you are and if they wanted can track your movements pretty accurately. Have you forgotten that it's a cellphone which is connected to a tower?

secondly, this ability, to the best of my knowledge has nothing to do with ATT. it will not make it any easier for ATT to know where you are. the iPhone/iPod is already communicating with MobileMe servers for sync services. this is just an additional feature that gives you the ability to "contact" your device and request that it tell you where it is, as well as the couple other features it provides when doing so.

to try and start a conspiracy theory out of this is just plain dumb.

I would back it up before you wipe it....

The site talks about wiping your data, then restoring via iTunes, after you've recovered your phone. That suggests to me that you can still get all the tracking goodies after you've wiped

It will be interesting to read the fine print on access limitations

I've had my orginal iPhone 2G for almost 2 years. No screen protector and no case. It still looks almost perfect.

I still don't know why everyone uses a case and/or screen protectors. This phone has held up better than anyphone I have previously had
Yeah, protection is not really needed on the iPhone unless you are in the habit of dropping it, then you need one of those giant rubber cases to be of any use.

What I find really silly is the folks that put the thin plastic "anti-scratch" film on their iPhone as if it was an old Treo or something. Those films were for scratches and the iPhone glass is like a thousand times more scratch resistant than the plastic film they are covering it up with. It's also easier to keep a "naked" iPhone clean than it is when you have one of those icky films over the top.

I guess they have a use in terms of keeping the glare down?

It isn't a theory if it is actually happening. And I don't use AT&T, nor an unsecured phone where a hip media company tells me how and when to use it.

I am tired of hearing the moniker "easier". It is not "easier" to limit app access to control battery life, it is an inconvenience. It is not "easier" to use MobileME connected to iPhones now as my service got to bad, especially with the initial launch last year. Apple needs to create REAL enterprise solutions and not just tie everything together. It isn't "easier" to register a phone on iTunes, when 10 million people do the same.

Cool. Just tried this and it worked well. I have two iphones. How does it know which one to ping ?

Fingerprint-resistant? There are people out there that don't use a screen-protector?

Now the people with the screen protectors are going to be the only ones with crap all over the screen.

If this works correctly then one wipe of your shirt should remove anything on it and make it look like new.

Who needs one?

Fingerprint-resistant? There are people out there that don't use a screen-protector?

Although I sport the form-fitting Incase case, I've never applied a screen protector to my iPhone. The case is rubberized and has a lip around the edge that keeps the screen a couple of millimeters below the surface, providing protection from face down drops.

Plus, all of the screen protectors I've seen actually dim the brightness of the display a bit, and given current battery life, I already have mine dimmed to as much as I'm comfortable with.

here's something funny to know about the word Oleophobic.

***taken from dictionary***
"Oleophobic" (from the Greek (oleo) "oil") refers to the physical property of a molecule that is repelled from oil.

The most common lipophobic/oleophobic substance is water.

Fluorocarbons are also lipophobic and oleophobic.
***

i'm doubting the screen is coating with water, which would suggest that the iPhone 3GS is using Flourocarbons to repel the oil on your finger. i wonder if Al Gore knows this. Heaven forbid the iPhone 3GS is later found to be contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer.

***environmental issues of flourocarbons****
man-made fluorocarbon based compounds are implicated in a variety of environmental and health related issues. For example, CFCs deplete the ozone layer while fluoroalkanes, commonly referred to as perfluorocarbons, are potent greenhouse gases. Also, the fluorosurfactants PFOS and PFOA, and other related chemicals, are persistent global contaminants. PFOS is a proposed persistent organic pollutant and may be currently harming the health of wildlife.

Remote wipe works with the iPod Touch? Where did you get this information?

Just to let you know, every cell phone company has had a really good idea of where you are at any given time since day one.

How do you think 911 finds out where you are when you can't tell them where you are at?

???????:confused::confused:
how does that have anything to do with my comment to your original post?
thanks for wasting our time on here with your hot air.
