I've had a case on mine since buying it 6 months ago. Yesterday I took the case off because of dust collection, and realized how much bulk it was adding, and how comfortable the phone is without it, and began wondering why I was using the case. It's a phone, not a faberge egg.

So I've decided to go naked.

I just LOLed at this. WTG!

I consider myself a well educated man, but i have to admit i had never heard of the word oleophobic! Thank you, Apple, for enriching my vocabulary!

Indeed. Now instead of spreading the oleo just on the glass, how about spreading it around a bit more and making the rest of the damned phone fingerprint resistant as well? ;)

AT&T, the company that manifested the Patriot Act into "black rooms" at local switch offices, now demos their greatest technology: instant complete tracking. Those un-numbered rooms full of highspeed switchers, that scrub our calls are now connecting to our devices like never before. This MobileME app is a nice demonstration of this tracking technology; linked to our personal lives via phone calls, text messages, emails, contacts and photos. Bang up thesis Big Brother! Someone else can make our lives easier, just show us where to sign.

Paranoid much? Like others have said before me here, the cell carriers can already track you - not just AT&T and on the iPhone. Now if you have something you want to confess - considering how you sound very guilty of something, feel free to speak clearly in your phone the next time you use it. Confession is good for the soul. Not that anyone really cares.

Only terrorists and those aiding and abetting same ever had anything to worry about the Patriot Act during the W years. Your concern of privacy and civil rights is nonetheless valid. Now that the world is hypnotized by B. Hussein, all bets are off.

Maybe its because of my invisishield case, but I haven't had any noticeable problems with smudging on my screen. I just wipe smudges off with my shirt.

I wish I had had the patience to install the invisishield. Looked great in the demo ... but I could never get the damned coating to stick where I wanted it to stick! I'll "stick" with my In-Case Slider. :D

I like my iPhone like I like my woman.. naked!

Careful now, we know what the iPhone looks like without any "clothes". The same cannot be said for every woman.

Awesome! Completely works for me, sending messages and sounds, live tracking, and the option for swiping data. ATT has this feature but it costs roughly $15/month, MobileMe offers a lot for $99 (over the air syncing of email, contacts, calendars, etc. to more than one system, 20 GB's off-site storage, iWeb and personal site storage - I have more than one website hosting through MobileMe, iPhoto photo publishing, Back to my Mac, and now iPhone recovery, definitely worth the yearly subscription).

Something I haven't been able to find on this...if you have a MobileMe family pack subscription, does that support multiple iPhones for this Find my iPhone feature?

I'm pretty sure that Big Brother has had this function for quite some time. What, we get all paranoid now because the technology is available to us and we can't be in denial about its existence?

Can your phone be tracked if the sim card is removed (swapped)?

let me answer that the long way.

by your question, i'm not sure you understand how it does "track." this is not cellular tracking/triangulating, etc.

mobileme is an internet based web service. it provides many features. all these features are dependent on an INTERNET connection. the Location API in the iPhone OS provides the Lat/Long info, given to it by the built in GPS, to the MobileMe portion of the iPhone OS. On request by the user, through the MobileMe service, that information is passed from the phone to the MobileMe service and then displayed for the user.

now to answer your question. again, forgive me for the long answer.
as the internet connection the iPhone gets COULD be directly related to the cellular carrier access, it is safe to say, that without the SIM card installed the iPhone would not have an internet connection (through the carrier) and as such the iPhone would not be able to be communicated with. if this happens, then NO, you would not be able to track the phone.

BUT!!!!
i've not ever tested this, but it's my understanding that the WiFi would continue to function properly without a SIM card installed. in this case, the iPhone/iPod could potentially be getting an internet connection through WiFi, meaning that it would still be able to communicate with the MobileMe service.

it is that exception that allows the iPod Touch to be able to utilize the features of Find My iPhone (as indicated by Apple on the Me.com site).

i dont own an iPod, and for obvious reasons would not be able to test this myself, but i cannot say with any certainty how exactly does an iPod get portrayed on the map if an owner uses the service to find their iPod. i can only assume, that IF that mapping function is usable for an iPod device, that it shows a general location based on where gorgraphically the WiFi connection is that the iPod is connected to at the time.

other than that, the remote wipe and alert features should work fine, again as long as the iPod is connected to WiFi at the time.

Actually any Cellular phone built since 9/11 is required to have a GPS chip inside it to be able to track any phone, and the user cannot access it, so your cheap nokia from 5 years ago has been easily tracked by the government. Obviously now GPS is a feature in phones so WE can use it for googlemaps etc.

The find my iphone feature is cool, its 3.0 ONLY and for me only gives a general area and not a dot like i was expecting. and the custom message is good for offering a reward or telling someone to give it back. and the sound is different and constant, and gives the user an email when you press OK to receive the message.

Wow, scary. Now they can find every hipster from Brooklyn to midtown! Are they at a Devendra Banhart concert? Are they sipping a soy latte in Greenpoint? Are these enemies of the state screenprinting ironic t-shirts in a Village loft?! NOW THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS!!!!!

how long til Jobs jacks up the MobileMe subscription price? Let's take bets...

I must say, as cool and as useful as it is, I've found the plotted location map quite unreliable.

It always seems to plot an at-least 500 metres from my location. Seems to be regardless of what connection I'm using (Wifi, 3G, Edge)

Still very cool

Does it try to use GPS? It should be able to be more accurate than that.

I just signed up for me.com, and noticed something with find my iphone. If your iphone was found by someone with malicious intent, they could easily go to your mail, cantacts, calendar settings and simply disable the @me.com address, and then find my iphone wouldn't work anymore

This would rely on the how fast you realized it was missing and could log into your account

on that same note... couldent we log into our mobile me account and change the password and in doing so it would not allow the phone to retrive new info and or allow whoever has it to get into the account to change any settings ?

PS.. I have always had password protect on so this is no worry to me. I have it turn on after 5 minutes. You get use to it... honestly you do

I wouldn't be surprised if the Find my iPhone features were tuned soon enough
for one - the level of ringer affects the level of the ping (just as the level of ringer set affects the level of a normal alarm).
Needing some features already turned on seems a bit of a pain. Also, you can turn the features off - shouldn't there be a password lock on the featue (or let mobileme override the setting?)

Now the people with the screen protectors are going to be the only ones with crap all over the screen.

If this works correctly then one wipe of your shirt should remove anything on it and make it look like new.

So will a wipe with a shirt clean out the scratches.......?

Must be a miracle "shirt" where can i get one?
