yes, but it would also open up the user to the MobileMe account you use. therefore youd want to set up a unique MobileMe account for that person.

yes i woud open a seperate mobile me account, thanks for the help, now i can see where they are really going wen they say they are going round there friends house! see if they are lying to me!!!

I have a plastic cover and a screen protector on my phone. Now I feel like my phone is following an Amish dress code or something.:D

No offense meant to the Amish iphone users out there.

Don't think there are any Amish iPhone users. Bu that's another story.

It seems like Apple is just doing what a lot of iPhone users already do.

That's a misconception about Amish people. They don't completely shun new technology. They just try to use it in ways that have as little impact on their traditional lifestyle as possible. The Amish have used telephones for a long time, and actually cell phone use has been on the rise in Amish communities for years. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them are iPhones.

If you have that much issue with trust then maybe you should just hold off on getting a girlfriend and reevaluate yourself. Geez.

Left Pants Pocket.

No case. No protective sleeve or film.

Pure unadulterated iPhone + loving care.

Nothing else every goes in the left pocket other than the phone (which protects against scratches)…and the phone stays perfectly clean just by the movement of the phone wiping itself as I move about.

Never have a problem with fingerprints. Never had a scratch.

Fingerprints

I've never seen fingerprints as a serious problem on the iPhone. I rarely notice them when the screen is on. The screen is bright enough to overcome them. Sometimes I see a little bit of a rainbow prism effect in a spot and will wipe it off.

Sometimes I'll polish it real quick, but I usually just leave it alone.

I just signed up for me.com, and noticed something with find my iphone. If your iphone was found by someone with malicious intent, they could easily go to your mail, cantacts, calendar settings and simply disable the @me.com address, and then find my iphone wouldn't work anymore

as i mentioned in a previous post, it would still be wise of iPhone owners to use the Password Lock function of the phone.

This is not a good response.. but it's so inconvenient! i don't even require a password on my mac to wake it from sleep!

agree

I agree with this. I don't like having to use the password lock feature, either. I would be enabling it just to protect the Find My iPhone feature.

Also, cool new features live or die by defaults. Since it is currently set up to be off by default, most users will never get any use out of this function. They won't think about it until they've lost their iPhone, and then it will be too late.

"not a good response" maybe you don't prefer or like the Password feature, which is fine, but it's still a solution.

it all comes down to how important your information really is. i guess i'm confused too about why Remote Wipe is so important to you and keeping your info secure, but you find a simple Password an inconvenience?

my iPhone is more than just a phone. i have tons of data (work and personal) on it that has no business being seen or acquired by prying eyes. password locking my phone is the sensible thing to do.

now with Find My iPhone, i can make the decision of whether wiping my info or attempting to recover the phone is more important. for me, wiping the info is more important, i can replace the phone at a far cheaper cost, than the "cost" of stolen data.

Does this coating extend over the whole phone?

I carry my Gen 1 naked and keep it holstered with the back open for viewing.

Been showing off its sexiness since June 2007. ;)

um where do you "clip" it...?

Can I track my kids with this?

I just think that as far as the ability to disconnect the phone from MobileMe goes... we're already trusting MobileMe as the gatekeeper of all that data - so why shouldn't we be able to override our iPhone's settings from it?

you have my vote on that one, if what you're saying is the ability to "remote control" your iphone and selectively change settings or remove specific bits of data vs a complete wipe.

the last thing im suggesting is that Password Lock is the thing everyone should be using. i'm just saying that it would seem to me, if your worried about securing data, and being able to remote wipe it AND also still be able to recover the phone, then a good first line of defense would be to password protect it. doing so, would give you the ability to continue to use the Find My iPhone feature, at least until the phone fell into the hands of someone who tries to "break into" the phone or does their own restore so they can use it themselves.

Agreed - Using Password Lock in conjunction would be the most secure option, but they could at least have a separate password for turning off MobileMe - or perhaps even me.com could send a specially formatted/encrypted SMS to override the phone and re-connect it.

I've not seen or heard mention of this previously, but Find My iPhone will also support iPod Touch. This is mentioned on the Find My iPhone page at Me.com

The only part of this service that could be usable on the iPhone is the ability to send messages and wipe data if connected to a Wi-fi network. For tracking, GPS is required. Don't see any mention of it being made available for the iPod Touch at all, though.

is that availbale for guns? just asking...........

Actually, oleophobic coatings on handguns are quite common. Also mentioned in the thriller "Runaway Jury," in which a gun executive attempts to clarify his statements regarding the "fingerprint-resistant" coating as being more about keeping the gunmetal from rusting.

yeah, i thought the same thing. it would seem the iPhone OS could be instructed through Find My iPhone, if the owner desired, to wipe all data, lock down the OS, but maintain the "link" with MobileMe so the user could continue to track. after that, the only way to "unlock" the device from this "locked" state, would be to attach it to the computer it is set to sync with. a restore could then be done and life goes on.

I just tried the find my IPhone feature deep inside the moscone center with the phone locked and i got a fairly accurate indication of the location. Very cool.

On a related matter updating to iphone 3.0 broke my AT&T GoPhone capability. Which means i no longer have data on my iphone. Not happy !!! :(
