Not trully convinced. In a way I want this to be true, but then I'll really want it, and I don't know if I'll be able to afford it. There's no way I am selling my 1G phone. Oh well. When it comes, it comes. If Walt is right, cheers, looking forward. The later it comes out, the more chance I'll be able to buy it! Seriously though, can not wait to see the new iPhone, really looking forward to FW 2.0. If they new iPhone has like, a 5MP camera, or better, I'd buy right away, 3G is not as important to me as I use wifi most of the time, and EDGE isn't as horrible as everyone says. And yes, i know its a phone, and if I want a real camera, i should just buy a DSLR (which I want to), but I'd rather have an iPhone and as I love taking pictures with myPhone...I just got back from taking over 400 pictures with my phone, and they look great. This kind of turned into a rant so I'll just finish it now...:D:apple::apple:

Don't worry man, current iPhones wills live on for a long time. I won't be picking up a new one (unless maybe if it has free gps) because the updates will be relatively minor. I'd rather use that money in other investments that can work to bring me even more money.

why more gov ??

Many on this thread seem to be asking for more government, particularly as it relates to the internet. Why not LESS government ?? With these nitwits out of the way, think what we could accomplish.

btw, did he say anything re new imacs ??

this video does not actually show him saying they will be out in 60 days!!

-- if you watch closely the camera dips off screen right when he supposedly says that line!!
-- he undoubtedly says that the 3G iphone IS coming... however this video could easily have been altered
-- doesn't it seem a little sketch that the most important line of this entire video falls out of frame?

hasn't anyone else noticed this???

Calm down. Do you know who Walt Mossberg is? No one's putting words in his mouth and/or dubbing over him. If he hadn't said "3G iPhone will be out in 60 days", he would publicly say so and out the nitwit who did say that.

Very interesting that the cameraman was able to mimic his voice exactly.

I've spoken to Walt via email about his comment regarding the 3G iPhone release. Some things people should understand are:
  • Walt has no inside information.
  • He wasn't promising anything despite the reaction from people.
  • His comment was based on the common consensus anticipating the new release.
  • He said 60 days because he thinks it's likely this summer that's all.
  • It was an offhand remark which has attracted a lot of attention.

I thought it would come out this summer at the latest so I don't know what the fuss is all about. His comment is nothing new. Just opinion which is widely the same.

I can assure you Walt made this comment as I have spoken to him about it.

I'll wait for an official statement from him or his office that pertains to this.

I contacted Walt via his site and he sent me an email with the information I have already posted. Anyone can do the same and he will tell you exactly the same thing, feel free if you don't believe me. Why someone would make things like this up is beyond me.

2,5 / 3G care less .... here in Spain you wont get 3G unless you live in and or around a BIG city .

Been owning 3G phones since YEARS for nothing .

If Apple dosent bring the iphone to Spain till June i get one and JB it :(

Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere which shows what cities will get 3g this year as a part of AT&T's expansion? I am from Kansas City, MO but go to college in Springfield, MO. KC has had 3g for awhile but Springfield doesn't have it at all. Only 150,000 people live here. Anyone think that is too small to get 3g soon?

Speaking of the internet speeds, in KC my parents have Comcast, which is advertised at 8mbps. In Springfield in my apartment I have Mediacom, which is also advertised at 8mbps, but usually is about 3-4 times faster then the Comcast in KC. It is also cheaper. I get basic cable with a box and 8mbit internet for $45. Regarding Comcast, I recently read something on Engadget about them flipping the switch on a new DOCSIS 3.0 spec internet in St Paul, MN that will have 50mbps up and mbps down, which will allegedly allow download of a 4gb hd movie in 10 minutes. First of all, any full length movie that is 4gb isn't HD, its DVD quality. Also, according to the DOCSIS wikipedia article, the speeds should really be in the 150mbps down, 100mbps up range for the slowest DOCSIS 3.0 spec. Perhaps by the time the DOCSIS 3.0 8 channel gets going with 300mbps downloads, we can see real 1080p video downloads. Thats probably, at the very least, 3 years away. Sad. Also sad is that the 50mbps Comcast will cost $150 a month.

I also love how lots of people are starting to complain how 3g isn't all that fast and are talking about the 4g iPhone. I thought 3g was the cure for everything this time last year? People will always want what they can't have. Plus 4g won't be out for a few more years, so your 3g iPhone will be the top dog for longer then the 2.5g EDGE.

So what will it take for me to upgrade? Personally, I would upgrade if they would just put more ram in the darn thing. And I mean ram, not flash memory. I think it comes with about 128mb. Thats the main reason everything crashes. Quadruple that to 512mb, and there would be far less problems. I know the memory would have to be much smaller and power efficient, but geeze, I bought 4gb of memory for my new MBP on NewEgg for eighty something dollars. Surely 512mb of miniram, or whatever it uses, wouldn't be all that expensive. Then you could have lots of background apps running like AIM, etc, which are limited now with the SDK. Safari would also be snappier...and if thats not reason enough, then I don't know what is!

What would be really killer: the new 3g back is black because its really a photovoltaic cell in disguise. Imagine charging your iPhone by placing it on your windowsill, or while sitting on a parkbench. Green tech FTW! I can dream...and sorry for so many random comments in this post. I tend to let them well up and then release a tidal wave all at once.a
You can get a 720p Movie in a little over 4 Gbs:D

its not that i dont believe you, i dont believe him. if he does have inside info and he let it slip the last thing he would do is tell some random person the truth. he's prob aware of the trouble he could get into with apple and is trying to spin control.

Eh, sorry but I'm not buying another iPhone at full price just because of 3G and maybe a shiny new case. I'm still waiting for all these "cool" apps to come out first.

What was the occasion he was speaking at? I mean, he kept on referring to Finland and Scandinavia, so I assume it took place in Finland.

If your saying it will never look as good as an SLR or even a point and shoot camera, that's true. But there will still be more definition in the picture.

Not necessarily. When you start cramming more and more pixels in to a tiny sensor, the image tends to get grainier. The real way to get better images is not with more and more pixels, but with better sensors and optics. I would say that 10 Megapixels is more than enough for even hi-end DLSR-cameras. They could probably do just fine with 8. Sure, there would still be a market for niche-cameras that have 20 megapixels and the like, but those are for special uses.

I currently have Eos 400D that has 10MP sensor. And I would gladly have 6MP camera with better sensitivity instead. Nikon has been moving to that direction recently. They have seriously improved the sensitivity while leaving the megapixels more or less untouched. Luckily I can improve the sensitivity with better optics, but we don't have that possibility with cameraphones. And even if I can get better glass, I would still be limited by the sensor as well.

I think thats what he means... they are small countries so therefore the resources required are more easily obtainable than in a huge market like USA.

While it might be easy to have fast broadband in a country where everyone lives close to each other (like Japan) as opposed to more sparsely populated country (like USA), it still does not change the fact that broadband in USA is less that stellar. Finland for example has excellent broadband, and our population-density is even lower than USA's. And we have 100% 3G-coverage.

Many on this thread seem to be asking for more government, particularly as it relates to the internet. Why not LESS government ?? With these nitwits out of the way, think what we could accomplish.

You mean even more monopilies and single-supplier markets?

Are the feds buying you a new iPhone?

It seems that the timing of Apple's "low inventory" on the 1st Gen iPhone coincides very closely to the May dates that were announced by the government for the mailing of the "economic stimulus" check. Steve is one smart cookie & that would indeed be a coup.

You are correct about broadband, but Finland doesn't have 100% 3G-coverage. It's very good for a sparsely populated country, but not even close to 100%

What a great way to get a ton of people to listen to his very interesting and important message -- release a video predicting a 3G iPhone. Talk about ways to make advertising better - Walt just dun did it.

BTW, at&t is also launching their mobile tv service in May. So the new iPhone might have that feature as well.

I tend to agree, I like how he dismissed the objections of libertarians. Basically, "Well, we obviously need more government, so don't be silly."

are you sure the question is "less or more government" and not, e.g., what kind of government? would it be possible that some times more government is good, some times more government is bad?

Yes, that's why I don't like the attitude of 'there's a problem, since I don't know how to solve it, let's get some more government on it," especially when there's probably all sorts of existing regulations causing unintended consequences.

Apple will definitly release a 3G, but I wouldn't believe it from this guy Mossberg. He stated on his blog that the iPhone will have flash. No flash has appeared, so he lost credibilty with me.

I wouldn't dismiss him so fast. The iPhone will have some version of Flash probably soon after WWDC. Mossberg is one of the more savvy writers on Technology. Another favorite is David Pogue - not only for his intelligence and humor but also for his ability to write about technology in a very accessible manner.
