Vampire Weekend (at Bernie's)

I touched on this in a post much further back in this thread, but I wouldn't even consider Vampire Weekend to be in this category of bands.

We're talking bands that have long careers and tons of critical appeal but they don't deserve it.

Vampire Weekend, The Strokes and their ilk are just flavor of the week bands. They make the cover of SPIN and get a lot of YouTube hits for a few months, maybe play SNL, but in a year or two who'll remember them?

(I realize The Strokes have been around longer than a year or two now, but they're all but ignored compared to the trumpeting entrance they made into the music world back when their first album was released...)

ironically with every album they are getting better in my opinion compared to many other of those bands (mando diao, arctic monkeys etc.)

You know, that's probably true for a lot of these bands that start off as Buzz Bin one-hit-wonders (the ones that don't break up before releasing a second album, anyway!).

Nada Surf and Radiohead are two bands that were totally flavor-of-the-week at one point in time and have grown far beyond that.

I have to disagree with all of the KISS bashing. A few comments above me, someone said that they have a cult following. I don't think that's true, being as a 32,000 person show sold out in 7 minutes in Finland the other day. Also, they have over 45 Gold and Platinum albums. They CONSTANTLY sell out their tickets for tours, and have managed to stay strong through multiple lineup changes.

While they may not be the most musically proficient band, they had a lot of good songs. Rock And Roll All Nite wasn't one of them, as I personally hate it. The sad thing is, that song is the only thing people remember about KISS. They've had a 35 year career, and they went through a lot of musical changes in their career. I own all of their albums, and after listening to them all, I can CERTAINLY say they are not overrated.

I couldn't agree more.

Overrated=Grateful Dead.

I never liked them either, but i just assumed i would love them if i were stoned.

Imo, Led Zepplin is way overrated. Maybe because i didnt grow up with it, but they just dont seem as awesome as most people say they are.

They sucked bad

If the age of both of you equals anything more than 20 combined, I will be a bit shocked. As for your statements, meh.

Muse and Bob Dylan

How can you think Dylan is overrated? He is the best musical lyricist of all time. He's influenced everyone including The Beatles.

Mine is Kiss, Grateful Dead, and Bon Jovi. All Bon Jovi has is a few songs from Slippery When Wet worth listening to.

KISS
Coldplay
Grateful Dead
Pearl Jam
3 Doors Down

Agree with everything you said except Pearl Jam. I think they are very underrated. Most haven't listened to their music past Ten.

Lol. Im 20 and i appreciate plenty of old music (ie Canned Heat, Rush, CCR, etc), but i just dont see anything about Led Zepplin that makes them so awesome. Their music is great, and i like it, but they just arent the gods everyone makes them out to be, imo.

Led Zeppelin. When they came out (a long time ago) they were just a band some liked and some didn't. Rolling Stone never gave them a good review. Over time they have grown to be giant. I'm just not sure why.

By the way, reading down some people's lists, I believe Bob Dylan was under-rated for almost two decades (1980-2000). I remember seeing him in a college gym in NJ. Now that he's released five very good albums in a row he's been getting respectful press. I wouldn't call that over-rated. I'd call that deserved.

I hate to do this as they are Irish and I am Irish, BUT it has to be U2 ...

Why do people rate them so high? They are OK but NOT great.

I'm Irish also and I agree with you and many others on this thread that they are possibly the most over-rated band of all time. I don't know why people rate them so highly, but I suspect that it must be that touchy-feely empathy for the Third World that Bono waxes about so eloquently.

Even that, I cannot abide: U2 no longer pay their taxes in Ireland - they relocated some years ago to Holland in order to reduce their tax liabilities - yet they have the nerve to lecture the Irish Governmant on its shortcomings and on the reduced percentage of Ireland's GDP which goes to the Third World. So, to my mind, they are worse than over-rated musicians; they are masters of the double-standard and arch hypocrites, too. I have lost count of the number of foreign friends who have responded with appalled dismay when I tell them this after they have gushed about U2 (thinking that I'd be overjoyed, as I'm Irish).

I'm inclined to think that Radiohead are somewhat over-rated, too. But I know people who simply rave enthusiastically about their music.

Cheers

The Beatles!!!

Absolutely. My entire life, I've been told how they are the first and final word in music, how their music was so life changing, blah, blah, blah. To this day, I cannot figure out what people love so much about them. They just do absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. The Stones, I get. Hendrix, I get. Zeppelin, I get. The Beatles - can't stand them.

I can't believe i forgot these until today while at work:

Barry Manilow
John Mayer
Jason Mraz
The Fray
Creed
Maroon 5

I think someone is just an alternative hater.

And mayer is overrated as a singer, great strat player though

O, rite. U2 for sure. I didnt even read a single post before i thought of it. I saw overrated and its like BAM....U2 pops up instantly.

Imo, any band that makes an album as good as The Joshua Tree can be rated as high as they want.
