Anything I'll say will just start a fight or a large debate.
It's just my personal opinion, music is something everyone hears differently.

I can agree with that. I think it's the same with movies. Some critics point out flaws, some point out successes, some both. But really you can't understand unless you go watch the thing, and no one will agree anyway.

I also don't think there's any way you can get everyone to agree on ONE band. You could maybe come up with a list based on one specific element, but not as music as a whole, IMO. That's like asking what's your favorite color, and expecting "blue" to be everyone's answer. So more running in circles... lol

Yah, exactly. Some people may argue that the skill of some musicians is better or worse, but even that is about personal taste and opinion...
Something as diverse and emotional as music can't be debated on best or worst.

I'm just saying you can't really bring bands into the mix that are good talent wise. Overrated would be a band that has little musical talent, but gets/takes credit for having a lot. To even join this conversation you need to know how to listen to music and evaluate it critically, otherwise it's just some random opinion based on your personal taste or experience.

I would love to hear legitimate reasons of why some of these bands are not extremely musically talented?

As I mentioned way back in my first post in this thread, my definition was that "overrated" meant that the band was more highly regarded by others than I think is deserved. To me, it has nothing to do with whether the band is talented or not, since there are plenty of talented musicians that aren't well-known. By overrated I meant that I don't understand why so many people like them, why they're moved by these songs and I'm not, that kind of thing. As mentioned from the beginning, this thread was always going to be very subjective. I, for one, never claimed that "overrated" was the same as "talentless".

And I think it's amusing that you think there's a set of musical criticism standards that anyone is going to follow. Even professional music critics often don't follow any standards, so to expect it on an internet forum is difficult to fathom. A critic's job is only to explain what they think of the music/book/movie/whatever and why they think that. It's more than just a random opinion, but mostly because readers respect that opinion, not because it's necessarily right more often.

One more vote for...

U2

If I see Bono, with his arm stretched back, with the wind machine in his face one more time, I am going to puke.

Yes, I listened to Joshua Tree, War and Auhtung Baby in their entirety. Pretentious crap. Period.

The most overrated bands...to me...:AC/DC and the Beatles. I hate AC/DC, all of their songs sound the same and they have 3 songs that are CONSTANTLY OVER PLAYED ALL THE TIME!! I put the Beatles because they are always on the radio, and I really can't stand that.

The recent plethora of threads debating the merits of certain rock bands has lead me to wonder what the single most overrated band of all time is.

I think arguments can be made for artists big and small, and there's so many choices that it would be silly to try and make a poll, but let me get the ball rolling by nominating U2.

Pretentious stadium rock at its worst, with one of the weakest rhythm sections of all time. Not the worst band by a long shot, but probably the worst for talent-to-accolade ratio.

Dave Matthews Band is a close second. It seems like they only know one song, and it's not even that great a song to begin with.

trying to make friends, are you? LOL

well there's definitely a lot....someone said all popular music....everything on the radio is overrated....agreed

my band would have to be Green Day

all the votes for Radiohead are completely rediculous.....maybe you all who voted them haven't actually listened to all their stuff

REM, oasis, although they both have nice songs. Placebo seems to be overrated lately, I don't really like them anymore (like it used to) :p it's just a song to say goodbye.

What about all those rappers and r 'n b music, they are way overrated!
