A lot of bands have a signature sound. The problem is when they get stuck in the same pattern and the only thing that changes is the lyrics.

Yes, there's a difference between a signature sound and every song sounding like the same melody and instrumentation with different lyrics.

Putting aside our differences, I think we can all agree with Amy Winehouse.

And I don't want anyone to say "no, no, no" HAHA.

The Foo Fighters are a great example. You can tell them apart from other bands but their songs don't all sound the same.

Since the Stones were already mentioned, I'd have to go with The Captain and Tennille. But seriously...

I'm going way back, but I think of some of the bands were we thought were really great when we were teenagers, but when you listen to their records today, you realize that they actually sucked quite completely. In that category, I'd put Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

yeah U2 is prime example ... i never really understood why so many people like them

and Nirvana would have never achieved it's legendary status if Cobain hadn't choosing the way of the gun ..

I was *this close* to throwing another log on the fire, and nominating 'Elvis'... but he's not a band and I value my currently intact limbs.

Soulja Boy for sure. Anything dance hip popish song thats played twice in half an hour on the radio. The music companies need to get over this tiresome genre.

Why has nobody said Rage Against the Machine. Every song sounds the same and I don't think they are that great aside from being rebels.

The album 'Frank' is fantastic as are the singles released from 'Back to Black' (I haven't heard her second album). So I guess that buggers up your statement! ;)

i give up, you win madam :). i usually listen to jazz (botti, connick, krall, sinatra, buble, peyroux etc).

I'm sure I'll piss off a few diehard fans, but I've always thought The Grateful Dead were the most overrated band.
I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you here. It may be a lack of a good definition of "overrated", but if we're talking about hype versus talent or hype versus effect on others, there's no way you can put GD anywhere near the top of a "most overrated bands" list.

Until "Touch of Grey" they never even touched the music charts, AFAIK. IMHO, you have to be rated before you can be overrated.

So you mean the music is only good if you are tripping on acid and don't know any better?
No. Absolutely not. Barring the vocal embarrasment of Donna Jean of course.

I hate to do this as they are Irish and I am Irish, BUT it has to be U2 ...

Why do people rate them so high? They are OK but NOT great.

I'd agree with the fact that all of their songs sound the same, however I'd still say their first album was worth a listen. I haven't heard them mentioned much lately though, maybe they've dropped out of the memory of most kids these days.

I think that Bono is overrated, but U2 is not. Not that Bono is a bad guy himself--he does some really good things, but not so much as to merit all the praise that's heaped on him. All that said, you just can't conflate Bono with U2, and U2's music is pretty good to my ears. Good lyrics and they've made some pretty interesting and unique sounds.

Most overrated band, in my opinion? Coldplay. Chris Onstad said it best (in his comic, Achewood): "Is Coldplay the next U2? No, they just use U2's musical techinques to create music that sounds like U2. It's frustrating for everyone." So on top of their lack of musical originality, you have Chris Martin's voice. If he has a vocal coach, the vocal coach should have his larynx removed. No breath support, extremely thin and excessively nasal, and the list goes on and on. If you took away Chris Martin's singing, you would at least have a band that I could say, "Hey, they're an OK band. They sound like U2, but at least it's catchy." Add Chris Martin's vocals and all I can think is, "How on earth does he manage to stay on pitch?"

I hate Chris Martin's singing.

I think the Nirvana naysayers either don't remember or simply don't realize the impact the band had in the music industry, well before and regardless of what Kurt Cobain eventually decided to do to himself...

Pre-Nirvana, you had Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, C+C Music Factory and Michael Jackson at the top of the charts.

Post-Nirvana, you had a return to guitar driven rock music.

They brought a change to the landscape that rivals pretty much anything else that happened before or since. The death - for better or worse - clumped Kurt together with other "died-too-young" musicians like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and such (but ask some people and even less deserved folks like Jeff Buckley or - have mercy! - the singer from Sublime belong there, as well), but they had already started a revolution that:

A) Led to all sorts of new, talented bands being given attention (Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and others) and

B) Led to all sorts of old, forgotten bands being looked at a second time (Husker Du, the Pixies and others).

It was derailed a little after the death, and the Spice Girls and Britney Spears took over, but the rock and roll bands never went away, and are still kicking around to this day in the form of The White Stripes, Ryan Adams, Arcade Fire and the like.

Finally someone with some sense. Although I don't think Bono is overrated.
