But did he sound better with Art or on his own.

Either way I think that's stretching the definition of overrated. Even if he's arguably not doing his best work now, that doesn't mean he's overrated. When I think of overrated, I think of music that I liked at one time, but now I wonder why I ever cared.

Fair enough, I might have over reached on that one.

Everyone who said the Beatles is right on.

Giving credit where its due is one thing, but crediting the band for every modern genre, or calling them the most inspirational band of all time is a whole other story. (Some of my beatle-fanatic friends have tried to tell me they are responsible, not partly responsible, but completely responsible for any and EVERY genre of modern music, including; hip-hop, punk rock, metal, country, modern folk, etc.)

Come on.

Other over-rated bands, obviously in my opinion:
Pink Floyd
Phish
The "dead"
any other jam bands

Most under rated group(s) or artist(s):
SAVES THE DAY
Bjork
Bad Brains

The only people I know who like Phish, and Bob Marley for that matter, are potheads. Actually, I don't know a single pothead who doesn't think Bob Marley is one of the greatest artists of all time - it's like a cult.

I can't believe I forgot bob marley.

Actually, I have heard that a lot of "true" rastafarian bands (Bad Brains, Burn, etc.) considered Bob Marley to be a "poser", due to the fact that he "exploited" raggae and the rasta life style. Just what I've read/ been told.

A lot of bands have a signature sound. The problem is when they get stuck in the same pattern and the only thing that changes is the lyrics.

That's part of what I love about Radiohead.

I love their songs, and you can always tell when it's a Radiohead song (partly because of Yorke's tremendously distinctive voice, and there's also something about the way the drums, guitars and keyboards are played and recorded), and yet every album of theirs has managed to progress to a completely new sound (bar Kid A and Amnesiac, both of which seemed like part of a bigger single album for good reasons).

Radiohead could be considered my number 1 band of all time :D

Rubber bands. Sure they are fun to shoot but what are they really good for? Tape and staples are far more versatile.

The Allman Brothers Band. I liked them but even while Duane still walked on the planet, this band could not actually walk on water, nor convert it to wine.

Death Cab for Cutie. C'mon.

I would add Arctic Monkeys but I agree they're more overhyped than overrated.

And I just ding'd the thread with a 2.

I'd have to say Bullet for my Valentine and Trivium at the moment.

I'm also in agreement with Linkin Park these days.

Oh and I almost forgot, My Chemical Romance.

If Nirvana lasted there would be no Foo Fighters.

Oh my god that would be so awesome! How are the Foo Fighters even on the radio? My cat writes better songs.

The Beatles HAVE to be the most overrated, as others have said.

People talking about the whole grunge era- These bands ushered out the hair metal that was plaguing wardrobes worldwide. Perhaps Soundgarden was severely underrated for being overshadowed by Nirvana, both in popularity and in credit for influence, but Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam all put out solid works and had solid influence.

The Beatles are not overrated, they really were/are that awesome and influential. I know it's hard to believe considering how much they get praised, but it really is true. If all you've ever heard from them is their early stuff or catchy stuff you hear in commercials and movies then you're under a misimpression. Go listen to the album Revolver and judge them by that.

As for their solo album stuff, generally it's just alright.

I like the Beatles, just not Lennon especially his solo career. I'm more of a Sir Paul/Wings fan. Band on the Run beats Imagine any day.

None of their solo stuff is anywhere near as good as their best Beatles stuff, in fact I think most of their solo albums range from terrible to only slightly above average. However, there is one Beatles' member solo album that is awesome, and maybe even as good as the best Beatles albums - George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass.

You want to talk about underrated? George harrison is by far the most underrated Beatle. In my opinion, George was actually the one that took the Beatles from average pop rock band and put them into the pantheon of rock and roll's all time greatests. Listening to their solos albums makes this quite clear. Paul's solo stuff is fun, but not too deep or special. John's solo stuff is always wild and musically simple in a very appealing way, but it's got no breadth, it's just all kinda the same and very often musically too simple. Ringo solo stuff is fine, but he also clearly wasn't a big part of the Beatles' tonality.

But then there's George. Listening to his solo album All Things Must Pass makes it clear that he was the one that added most of the magic. This album's emotions go from haunting, to funny, to mystical, to uplifting, and beyond. His album has the rich sonic tapestry that made the Beatles' so special. His lyrics are stimulating, his voice is emotionally powerful, his melodies catchy, his harmonies velvety, and his arrangements perfect.

If you're a Beatles' fan and you've never heard All Things Must Pass, then you need to go buy it. Tomorrow morning.

honestly i haven't read most of the last 8 pages so some (or all) of these may have been previously mentioned. if so, they probably need to be repeated anyway:

-U2
-Aerosmith
-Dave Matthews Band
-The Doors
-Nirvana

that being said, almost no member of these bands are talentless. some of the above bands have members with tons of talent, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the music they create is good, or worthy of the praise it gets. i can think of many bands who i think have just as much or more talent, and will never get anywhere near the recognition of any of the above bands, simply because they are not mainstream friendly. maybe there's nothing wrong with that, however i just hate how a band's talent/taste/songwriting ablilties are not necessarily what makes them successful in today's mainstream music scene.

if you agree or disagree that's cool, one of the things that is so great about music is that it's completely subjective
