Pre-Nirvana, you had Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, C+C Music Factory and Michael Jackson at the top of the charts.

Post-Nirvana, you had a return to guitar driven rock music.

I think you make a good point. But remember, Nirvana wasn't the only band making headlines in the early 90s, there was a whole wave of bands defecting from the synthesizer. You might say that Nirvana was the most popular, though, depending on who you talk to.

Clearly there were many of you that weren't listening.

Again. The correct (and only) answer is:

Nickelback.

P.S. Whoever brought up U2 is an idiot.

Madonna gets my vote.

She is from Michigan, yet sometimes has a British accent. She has sold 200 million albums, yet 99% of her music sounds like off-the-shelf pop. Her seemingly PR focused involvement in Kabbalah (even though she is Catholic), and Malawi adoption (which normally takes over a year... but she used her influence to do it in six days) just sort of make me ill.

Since we've brought up Coldplay a lot, may I risk being blasphemous to those that worship at the house of Sting and say that The Police were the Coldplay of the 80s?

I would almost add The White Stripes to the list.

I think The Police are great. They just broke up cause they fought to much.

Then you have to add Genesis and Paul Simon.

Tough call. I liked "In the Air Tonight", "Land of Confusion" and "Another Day in Paradise" - but you could catch me on a technicality with the last one because that was solo Phil Collins. Might file that under "over-hyped with a few good ones."

Well, it was certainly a movement, Nirvana is just the flag bearer because they were the ones that (for lack of a better term) broke punk into the mainstream.

After "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a radio hit, there was a slew of singles from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and friends, which begat Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool and friends, which begat Bright Eyes, Wilco, Kings of Leon and friends.

You could argue that bands like Jane's Addiciton and the Pixies were making the same type of sounds before Nirvana, but no one (well, almost no one) was paying attention.

Then you have to add Genesis and Paul Simon.

Genesis had some good moments, but they hung around too long, especially after the departure of Peter Gabriel. What's your beef with Paul Simon? He may not be very relevant anymore, but he wrote quite a few terrific songs in his day.

Nirvana wasn't punk, they were "grunge".

Was that with Garfunkle or on his own. Was Paul better with Garfunkle or better Graceland.

and Nirvana would have never achieved it's legendary status if Cobain hadn't choosing the way of the gun ..
The same could be said for any band/artist though. The longer the band/artist is around the harder it is to keep producing at a high level. If Hendrix was alive today would he still be regarded w/the same legendary status? Probably not. If Jim Morrison didn't die would The Doors still be mythic rock legends or just a bunch of old dudes chase the magic from 40 years ago?

I like Radiohead a lot, but I have to say that Kid A is basically one big tribute album to Can and Aphex Twin.

My top overrated band choices would be U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, and Oasis.

Both, but since Paul Simon wrote virtually all of the S&G songs, it hardly matters. His song writing has always been strong.
But did he sound better with Art or on his own.

When artists go on their own, ie Peter Gabriel, they may do better solo but they throw the former band under the bus.
Lets look at Gwen Stefani, I think she is worse on her own.
