Anyone know if the back is kevlar?

Yes, the back is DuPont Kevlar with a soft touch coating.

I wonder how they're measuring the "24 hour battery life" of the MX.

On their website, they just list it as "mixed use". I have to say, this is the first time I've ever seen a company actually state an expected battery life for actually using the device. Typically they will list a talk time and a standby time, and that will be about it. The fact that they go out of their way to say mixed use should last 24 hours is interesting to me.

I have to agree with others on here. This thing will flop. People won't care and by the time all it's exclusivities run out and the unlocked version comes out, the Nexus 4 (2013) will be out running Android 5.0 and will also probably have the always on listening feature. Plus it will be on the Play Store rigtht away unlocked for $300-349. Too little too late Motorola.

I am almost certain the always on is a Motorola feature that will never makes its way to the nexus line. I do like the way you call it the nexus 4 (2013) b.c everyone assumes it will be a nexus 5. It makes sense to keep it called a nexus 4 or 4 2 like the nexus 7 did.

Oh and the people posting on the "front page" article seem very interested. I think we were all disappointed b.c we had hoped for a cheaper unlocked price. I really do think this will sell big. The specs may not really matter when you have one in your hand and it is fluid. People looking to buy on contract will definitely take this phone serious.

Here is a good thread going on with someone who has the phone

A good marketing and distribution strategy will determine the success of this device. A lot of people (re: the general consumer) doesn't know or care much about specs and will see this phone as Motorola's high-end competitor to the S4 and One.

Regarding pricing, it's priced like a flagship device.

The pricing is a huge mistake. It's hard to imagine that experienced companies like Google, Motorola (yes I know Google Owns them) & the carriers all signed off on the price. All of us enthusiasts understand the significance of this error.

The interesting aspect will be what public acceptance is like. Only time will tell if enough buyers still have a favorable impression of the Motorola name. And if so, how many will switch to the X. Rapidly reaching saturation, the smartphone sector has never been more competitive.

Excellent post and right on the money.

Thr pricing and and AT&T exsclusive was a bit of a shock to me. I thought finally Google had the weight to throw themselves at carriers. Instead they did not stand their ground. Who in there right mood thought they should let verizon tinker with the phone. Nothing like useless app! I'm looking at you VZW Tones adn NFL mobile!

I have to say, the pricing and exclusivity stuff threw me too. I was expecting something more in line with the Nexus 4 pricing (off contract). What we got was something that, on paper to us enthusiasts, looks similar to a Nexus 4 but is priced like a S4 or One. Sure, regular old Joe Consumer probably doesn't know and won't care about specs, but those of us that keep up with this stuff know and I think it'll go over like a lead balloon with us.

I'm also surprised that Google either doesn't have or chose not to throw their weight around with the carriers. And it's not just Verizon...apparently, at the very least, AT&T is doing the same thing with it's crap ware (shocking, I know). Hopefully, in a couple of years, the Nexus 4-type devices will become the norm...i.e. you'll be able to purchase excellent phones directly from Google for a fair price and cut out the carriers. I can dream, can't I? :D

Seeing as how terrified Google is of offending Samsung and HTC, I cannot imagine them pricing the unlocked GE Moto X anything lower than what they're pricing the GE One/S4.

Best exorcize the $299-349 price point out of your mind to brace yourself.

Setting aside the specs and all else that's been covered in this thread, I'm hoping that the Moto X is a big success. The smartphone sector will benefit, the public will benefit, and no one loses.

The 1080p front camera and hands free google now are really a nice touch on top of the customization. I think it will do very well.

The phone has mid-range specs and a high-range price.

I'm not sure who would pay $200 plus a contract for this over an HTC One or SGS4, but I don't get people who buy contracts, anyway.

Incorrect. Google owns Motorola and when Google wins, everybody loses a little bit more.

Google Swat Team

Google needs to form a SWAT team to invade, secure and completely takeover Motorola. All Motorola employess become Google employees. First step is to remove all Motorola signage and replace it with Google Nexus, then take a writedown on all Motorola products, including the X and develop a true, top tier phone called the Google Nexus.

They do it all the time with the iPhone.

(I agree with you. Just pointing it out).

Google Glass already has this feature. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Nexus does it too. It's just a matter of time until every device we own does this.

It's very sad to see people choose to be so negative and hateful. If not for Google our entire Internet experience would suffer. How quickly the haters forget how much Google has contributed to Apples success.

Even as this is being composed, Google has entire departments dedicated to making products that run on OS X, iOS, and all other platforms.

To sit back and take pot shots at Google only reveals ones lack of knowledge. Yet that said its the typical mob mentality that causes the haters to pile on to any cause that bolsters their ego.

Sorry but Google hasn't done jack to contribute to Apple's success and they certainly have never done anything positive. All they've ever done is further erode the entire notion of privacy.

Most USA people (usually over 60-70%) are on family lines. So you really need to compare the average cost per line. Because family lines offer significant savings.

I used to have 4 lines with 4 smartphones data plans plus unlimited texts and 700 min plus rollover plus any mobile (which makes it essentially unlimited minted) plus 24% discount.

My total bill including taxes for 4 lines was $210.

That makes my average cost $52/line plus a subsidy every 24 months worth about $400 each line.

Tmobile's "uncarrier" plans which people claim saves people money is $50/line for 500mb data or $60/month with no subsidy and 2Gb data plus taxes.

That's why people have contracts. More lines in a family the bigger the savings.

Angry, hateful & misinformed, another blast of paranoia erupts :D

I've done very well with contracts & family plans.

It enables me to save money while having at least four lines for my use. I do my due diligence monthly and monitor my statements, check pricing and stay on top of it. Done regularly its fast, easy and highly worthwhile.

I'm more interested in saving money than hating carriers :)

T Mobile in a hold pattern maybe they realize its a dud.

I will for sure make this phone my daily driver. It's what I've been looking for in terms of an iPhone replacement (I still love you, Apple). Specs were never a concern for me, and it feels like my S4 isn't using it's full potential in terms of the quad-core processor and gpu.

I think it's about time people are making the switch, though I will always own Apple branded laptops.

I'd rather have some features I use (Siri on iPhone for voice alarms/etc, now Moto X for that!) a nice build quality and a nearly stock version of Android out of the box.
