We should make a poll to see when price drops on contract will happen.

I predict 30 days they will quickly drop price to $99 on contract and by November this thing will be $49

Consumers will look at a $199 S4 (or lower) or iPhone 5S for $199. Than look at the $199 Moto X (all on contract).

Lets see who's bright idea was it to set contract price at $199

If they advertise it really well and it is plastered all over the store they may shock everyone with sales.

I don't see it being successful even because of the pricing strategy. Nokia even with millions from Microsoft windows ad program barely making a dent even being on all the major carriers. (In USA).

The Moto X is DOA in the USA. Blame it on the carriers. I suspect they had a major say in the pricing strategy with Google. Google has their hands tied. They can't dictate to the carriers what to price the phone.

That's why the iPhone changed everything in the USA cellular world. The carriers used to dictate everything. Anyone remember Verizon purposely neutering Bluetooth on Motorola phones circa 2004/5?

Anyone remember carriers dictating to RIM to leave out wifi on their blackberries? It's quite ridiculous what power carriers had on phones until the iPhone came along.

For some reason i think they will sell more units then you think. "Most" Girls love "pretty phones". I can see some rich girl getting all 16 colors to match her outfit.

Genius move by google. Become more like apple and appeal to the general population.

When I first heard about the phone being available in different colors, I thought the same thing. However, you can't change the back yourself. I know girls who change the case on their iPhone every few months. I question how many people would buy a pink phone if it could never be changed after purchase.

They said you could change the phones colors within two weeks after you get it, but I doubt it's something you can keep doing every two weeks.

Nope. Don't see it happening.

The Previous android Motorola were not a good sellers on sprint tmobile or att. It's had some success on Verizon with their Droid line.

I don't see girls or guys going gaga for this phone at this contract price.

This is the USA. Where Americans think paying $200 for a phone on contract is too expensive.

Apple has had a lot of success selling their previous generation phones for $1 and $99 on contract.

Samsung finally got the hint and selling the S3 for $99 on contract.

The AT&T version includes AT&T Address Book.

Robert Scoble is really hyped about the Moto X.

So, it turns out he was so excited because of the always listening mode. He wasn't even aware that the new Droids announced last week also do that.

Yeah, I was thinking they'd announce one more thing or two at 9PM because he said his embargo ended then, but it's 9:03 PM now and nothing.

This. You're dead on right.

I'm predicting they'll start dropping the price after 2 months at most. No way do they sell tons of these phones at the same price as the S4 and One (let alone the fact that it's going to be competing with other high end phones soon).

This thing is DOA from this moment forward.

Except the vast majority of consumers don't know a damn thing about specs. To the people here this phone is crap but most people don't know the difference. It's entirely up to marketing. If Motorola markets this phone right (doubtful) it could have the potential to do decently.

This was true at one time but consumers are a little more educated these days. Buying a phone these days people tend to do there due diligence.

$500 MILLION marketing budget. Sometimes this **** doesn't make sense. Clearly google has cash to burn, why bow down to **** AT&T.

Should have just released it at $299 unlocked price point and blow the competition out of the water.

And simultaneously blow Motorola's profit as well. Great idea.

I have to agree with others on here. This thing will flop. People won't care and by the time all it's exclusivities run out and the unlocked version comes out, the Nexus 4 (2013) will be out running Android 5.0 and will also probably have the always on listening feature. Plus it will be on the Play Store rigtht away unlocked for $300-349. Too little too late Motorola.

I can't see this phone doing well, especially not with all the customisation options being exclusive to AT&T. The always-on voice feature will probably be a hit when it later, and inevitably, comes to other Android phones.

I'm not sure if I'd buy this over an HTC One or an S4, seeing that it is similarly priced and on paper, comes with lesser bells and whistles.

My bet is the phone will be a dud. There are too many things just left to "coming soon". First off, people won't even know about the phone nor will they care about the custom options and always on listening. Secondly, they will see its the same price as a HTC One or GS4 and get one of those. Also, the phone won't launch for another 3-4 weeks and then who knows how long AT@T will have exclusivity to the customizability. Who knows when a Play Edition will come or what price it will be. My guess is $600 for the 16GB model and they won't sell a 32GB model Play Edition. So basically, 3 months from now we will all be sitting here saying "When will other carriers get the customizability options for the Moto X?" or "When can I get a wood back for my Moto X"? or "When will the Play Edition come for the Moto X"; and by then the Nexus 4 (2013) will be close to release with Android 5.0. It will most likely have the always-on listening feature and will sell unlocked through the Play Store right away for $300-349. Too little too late Motorola.

I wonder how they're measuring the "24 hour battery life" of the MX.

----------

I guess at the end of the day, Apple's iPhone releases could be considered pretty mid-range specs compared to what's out there in the Android world, and they still get away with charging $199 on contract because of its user-experience.

If that's the goal of the MX, should we not give them a chance?

The answer will differ from person to person.

For me, I'm most likely sticking with my One.

With the iPhone, you don't have much of a choice. It's either pay the price for the new iPhone, or you can get the old one for less. The Moto X is a great phone. There is nothing wrong with it, besides being priced into competition with the most popular smartphones available. I just don't see it as being a game changer that is going to cause people who like their current smartphone to switch to it. I see it as being just another option at the store, and there is nothing wrong with that. I like having more options when I'm ready to buy something.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe people are so fed up with Touchwiz or iOS that they'll see this as an experience that they would prefer and flock to the stores to buy it. Time will tell.

The pricing is a huge mistake. It's hard to imagine that experienced companies like Google, Motorola (yes I know Google Owns them) & the carriers all signed off on the price. All of us enthusiasts understand the significance of this error.

The interesting aspect will be what public acceptance is like. Only time will tell if enough buyers still have a favorable impression of the Motorola name. And if so, how many will switch to the X. Rapidly reaching saturation, the smartphone sector has never been more competitive.

Thr pricing and and AT&T exsclusive was a bit of a shock to me. I thought finally Google had the weight to throw themselves at carriers. Instead they did not stand their ground. Who in there right mood thought they should let verizon tinker with the phone. Nothing like useless app! I'm looking at you VZW Tones adn NFL mobile!

I'm genuinely tempted by this device. Benchmarks seem to prove it's still faster than my S III.

But, my only concern is international availability.
