Verge says it will sell a google edition on the PlayStore eventually ....

I guess that is slightly good news. Unfortunately that will likely still be more expensive than the Nexus 4 and not get updates as quickly.

Plus it seems like having a Google Play edition would get rid of the always listening feature and the flick motion to get to the camera. Two software features of this phone that at least try and make it stand out...

Why would having a Google Play edition get rid of those features? Beats audio still works on the HTC One GPe...

This is gonna be a homerun for Google and should compensate for their Android monetization problems. That $12 billion Motorola acquisition doesn't seem like a waste of money anymore

I don't see this happening. I know that is what Google wants, but I just don't see it. I'm sure people will buy it, but I don't see people flocking from Samsung and Apple to get a Moto X.

They're leveraging the ability to customize, which nobody else offers. And they can extend the model to future designs once they get the supply chain down. Hopefully they eventually extend the customization to internals, give or take a couple more days for overseas shipping.

I think you forgot the /s or  at the end of the last paragraph. I least I hope you did.

They're only offering the customization for one carrier--one carrier worldwide. And they aren't even offering the 32 GB model beyond one carrier. Once upon a time Apple could pull off the carrier exclusivity. Motorola isn't Apple.

I agree....I want the Moto X but it would never replace my S4 or my IP5.....ok.....maybe my IP5 but not the S4! :)

Consumers aren't dumb. Moto X will end up like the Facebook HTC First phone. At least that phone was $99 on contract before it went to 1 penny on contract and $450 to $350 off contract.

I have a sneaky suspicion Google is really only selling the moto X to carriers for $300 in bulk. And carriers have colluded together to sell the Moto X for $199 on contract.

Manufactuers never tell us how much carriers are actually paying for their phones in bulk. Only Sprint's CEO admitted the iPhone cost Sprint 50% more than any other phone in their lineup.

Midrange schmidrange. To the majority of potential buyers - not us gadget nerds that frequent these forums - I don't think it matters much that this one doesn't top the specs charts. What they have here is the best looking Android phone to date (imo). On a level that finally comes close to Apple design. Many will love the custom colors. I think they have a winner here.

For myself, I feel like buying one just for fun, just because of its looks. If I had enough cash to own a "daily driver" and another phone on the side, I'd buy this one in a heartbeat even though the Note 2 has proven to me that 5.5" screen + S-pen is what I need. I also like the voice activated Google Now thing a lot.

The "camera shake" thing is a good idea - the faster you can bring up the camera, the better. Definitely useful, if it actually worked... I don't get why they don't just put a dedicated camera button somewhere. Not just for taking snaps, but for waking up the camera as well. How hard can it be? One press to insta-activate the camera, 100% of the time. The "shake" is a bright idea, a stupid gimmick.

And no 4.3? Come on. The "separation" between Google and Motorola that they talk about...that just doesn't make sense. If it's Google's company, the one advantage they should have is Nexus level update timing.

Overall though, I bet this one is going to sell really well. Again, I would pick it up for fun in a sec if my cashflow was just a tad more happening :D Most of all, I'm just so happy to se an Android phone that doesn't just *almost* look good. This thing looks hot.

Beats audio is an outlier. Nothing else came over from the HTC One. And not a single thing came over from the GS4. Not their dual picture taking feature, eye tracking feature, or anything.

Google Play Editions took over all gestures and camera UI in the HTC One and GS4. Don't expect the camera or flick thing to come to the GPE.\

The whole point of a GPE edition is to bring stock Android to other devices. The flick feature and always listening feature having nothing to do with stock Android. Using the HTC One as an example to support your argument is irrelevant as, like I said earlier, it is an outlier. If you want to use it for your argument, there are tons of stuff that didn't come over from the HTC One. And even more so, literally nothing from the GS4 came over on the GPE.

The always listening feature is exclusive to Motorola software. That is why it is in their new Droid devices that had no Google input.

Expecting these things to stay on the GPE is just wishful thinking. Just like all those people who thought this would have stock Android on all carriers, just like all the people who thought it would come with 4.3, or a quad-core CPU, or $200 off contract. I don't want to pull the "I've been pretty accurate so far" card, but I will if I need to ;)

No worldwide release?

Were instead getting "something cool".

I was hoping Motorola had moved on from having to regonalised devices like they did with the Xoom outside of the US. (NON Google edition devices).

Were were left with older versions of Honeycomb whilst ICS was out on the US models (thankfully the bootloader was unlockable on the WiFi models and they could be turned into Google Experience devices).

Device is too expensive woudve got it if it was about the same price of a Nexus 4 but $600 that's Crazy

What can you say...... Unbelievable. The launch goes from bad to worse !!!

At launch only... customization will roll out to the other US carriers

And Google doesn't need the Moto X to obtain an iPhone level of market penetration. They're an ad company that will continue to make most of their $$$ off ads. They just need it to get enough market penetration that 1) it gives them an alternate revenue stream that helps counter Android monetization problems and 2) it gains enough brand recognition to keep Samsung from hijacking their platform

New phones come and go every few months. By the time the customization is fully available on other carriers (Verizon said to have it by yearend), there will be any number of new phones, including the Galaxy Note III, the LG G2 (I know, don't laugh but IMO a device worth checking out), a new Nexus, and the device that will have likely the greatest impact--a new iPhone. Once the iPhone comes out, this device is now competing against the HTC One, the S4, the Note III, and umpteen other devices. And there is no worldwide launch---no excuse other than not being able to handle anything more than minimal demand.

I'm sorry, this is basically DOA. This will sell some but nothing of significant impact and certainly nothing that will help justify the $12B Google spent on Moto.

I disagree, the fact that the phone has actual special hardware specific for some of these features(similar to Beats audio on the One) tells me that it'll at least have that capability built in.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what features are available when it actually comes out on the Google Play store.

There is no basis to believe that. If anything the best is to look at the past. The two Google edition phones lost a lot of features. It helps differentiate the models.

Looks like I might be waiting for the Nexus refresh after all. I'm toying with the idea of getting a GPE S4 or One, but I'm having trouble justifying $600+ just to jump from HSPA to LTE.

We should make a poll to see when price drops on contract will happen.

I predict 30 days they will quickly drop price to $99 on contract and by November this thing will be $49

Consumers will look at a $199 S4 (or lower) or iPhone 5S for $199. Than look at the $199 Moto X (all on contract).

Lets see who's bright idea was it to set contract price at $199
