Close to deciding on moto x over nexus 5

I keep going back and forth between these two phones. Literally the hardest tech decision I've had to make!

I really like the moto x size and battery life even though i know part of me will miss getting a big 1080p screen :-(

How is the camera working for people post update? For reference I'm coming from a GNex so my standards are not high but i'd like to be able to take pics in a moderately dim room without it being super grainy (which my GNex sucks at!). From what I've read the nexus 5 has better quality photos but the software is so bad that the moto x wins. I know google is planning an update but there is no guarantee how well that will work. Also motorola can still make improvments too. If i could get a camera experience that is at least better than what i have now i think I'd be ok giving up the 1080p display.

Trying to decide before the moto x deal is over! Any help appreciated. Especially if you are coming from a GNex.

My camera seems to be working GREAT. The only pictures I've taken are of my niece and nephew or I'd post some examples. What I will say is that some of them look pretty good (though the subjects help), nothing like my 18 MP Canon EOS-M takes, but they're not bad. They are also all indoors at night, with more natural light it may do better.

I am not using ART either. I also keep my brightness at about 25%.

I just think it is ridiculous that the Nexus 5 is barely giving me 2 hours of actual use on my phone. So I am hoping the Moto X will be a significant improvement.

Something is not right there. The last charge I had 21 hours since unplugging, 2.5 hours of screen on time and still had 35%.

I do have the following things turned off though - NFC and Google Now.

just ordered 2 with the special promo. One for my mom to replace her 2000 style nokia bar phone. 1 for myself to replace my iphone 5.

I disagree, and for one major reason. Verizon and Motorola love each other. Verizon has carried the Droid line exclusively and they were the first to update the Moto X to KitKat. Its obvious they have a strong working partnership. One can easily argue the reason the Nexus phones have never reached their full potential is because they aren't available on Verizon's network.

Except that they need to reach a worldwide market with the phone, not just the US and Google really don't seem to care about promoting the Nexus line like you seem to think they do. Not to mention they have been building up their Play Store with devices recently and the Nexus line is not where profits are made.

LG didn't do that great of a job with the Nexus 5 as its been plagued with screen, battery and reception issues.

Huh? The screen on the Nexus 5 is easily up there with the best screen I have seen on a smart phone and I don't have any battery or reception issues. Which Nexus 5 model do you have?

And the other poster is right, unless Google wants to seriously antagonise their OEMs, we won't see a Motorola Nexus device...

The camera is ok. Nowhere near as good as my Note 3 but acceptable. This is with HDR on

Just got a Moto X from at&t yesterday, and I must say this phone is much more impressive than its specs would dictate.

I'm coming from a Note 3, and the Moto feels much smoother and polished. Speed wise its about the same, with maybe a small advantage to the Note. I would also give the camera advantage to the Note, but that's not to say the Moto X takes bad pictures, just not as good as my Note or iPhone. Battery life has been about the same so far, so its pretty good, though I do need more time with it. Hard part is getting used to the smaller screen again, but handling a smaller phone feels so much better.

I'm really digging this phone though, the version of android Moto has on this is a breath of fresh air coming from the Note, and the HTC One before that. Everything runs smoothly, even the apps, its like this is what android is supposed to be like. I also like the little touches Moto put, active display is awesome, being able to just pick up my phone and have the lock screen just appear really adds to the expierence, as is the always listening Google now, this phone just feels smarter.

I have both the Note 3 and Moto X as well. While you are right about the active display and always listening, the Note really buries it for other features, its not really close. I also like that the X is easier to hold but the screen just feels tiny after using the Note for awhile. However, at that $349 price, the X is a great buy. Motorola should be keeping it at that price.

Cyber Monday sale! Keeping the Note 3 as well.

Oh, awesome! How're you liking it so far? How's performance, battery, etc. compare to your Note 3? My G2 is being delivered today and I'm promptly putting KitKat on it. I do have to admit, though, that I miss my Moto X.

Hard to compare because they are two very different devices aimed at different buyers. The Note does pretty much everything better though and it has tons of features the X does not. Active display on the X is cool though.

I'd say that's subjective, though. Some people may love the Samsung features, while others may not. When I got my S4 over the summer I turned off all of those hover gestures, eye tracking, head tracking, etc. because after a day or two they just got boring and weren't really useful at all. Plus, they used up unnecessary power/RAM. On the other hand, Motorola only added in 2-3 features onto the Moto X, but made sure that each feature they added was genuinely useful and would improve the UX.

I wish Samsung would do the same and place UX and speed at the top of their priority list, and then add features ONLY if they did not hinder performance or make the UX worse. That would be awesome.

They definitely are very different, and going from the Note 3's screen to the Moto X is a huge change. It really depends on what type of user you are.

I don't use those either, except for Smart Stay where the screen stays lit while you are looking at it, thats extremely useful. I am talking about features like the gallery, where I can create new photo albums and move pics around, hide them from the album etc...Also, things with the S pen. Being able to write on screenshots, highlight something in a pic, draw on a map or select a portion of a pic to email or text to a friend or client is also extremely useful and exclusive to the Note line.

Yeah, the screen is probably the biggest adjustment when going to the moto x. As for the extra features, I only rarely used mutli window and the spen features, the other features I turned off. The software just feels so much better though on the X. While Im definitely going to keep my Note 3 for now and swap between the two, I'm eventually going to have to sell one and its going to be a tough choice.

Got my T mobile moto x yesterday and returned it the same day. Purple tint when the brightness is at zero and large amount dust behind the back and front camera. Motorola refused to replace it so I sent it back for a refund

Yes indeed. I doubt samsung will change though. So it's google edition samsung devices for me or no samsung at all. I really wish they would take the moto approach.

Moto is doing well, I hope they keep it up!

There camera isn't great... It's my least liked part of the Moto X. I actually just created a new thread on it on the Alternatives page.

I hear the screens look more washed out than other 1080p screens. I wonder if this is true or not.

Yea, it just seems there is much less customization options on the X. Even something like changing the font can't be done, at least not that I have found. Even using an app like font manager won't work. It's little things like that, just way more ways to tweak things on the Note.

LG didn't do that great of a job with the Nexus 5 as its been plagued with screen, battery and reception issues. Areas Motorola happens to be very good at, especially battery life and reception/radios. I guess we will see though.

Well, the Anandtech Nexus 5 review is out and they have done extensive battery testing:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7517/google-nexus-5-review/3

The Nexus 5 does better than the Moto X in every single test except charge time. Also a point to note is that whilst the Nexus 5 is never at the top, it is always in the top 1/3 or 1/2 of the devices tested. It certainly isn't poor.

People get a new phone, and the natural thing to do is to use it and play with it much much more than they normally would and this is totally skewing their perception of their battery life.

The verge (who were among the biggest critics of the Nexus 5's camera), have gotten pre-release access to the Android update and have found that the camera is massively improved. The update will go out within the next few days.

IN ONLY FIVE WEEKS, GOOGLE MASSIVELY UPGRADED THE NEXUS 5'S CAMERA
