Cool. I currently work in tv production and we spend an ungodly amount of money but the studio doesn't care because they still expect to make a profit (doesn't always happen though).

I think this is the same thing as justifying wealth redistribution and that somehow the rich didn't earn it. As someone who has lived on both sides of the tracks, I know rich does not equal wrong unless it was literally criminal. If someone earned $10 million, they have a right to leverage it to make even more.

Wealth redistribution is actually a propaganda term. It’s not about “taking” money from the rich. It’s actually more about how the tax code and how it has been manipulated to benefit one economic class over another.

I’m confused. 30 bucks for a non physical disc that I don’t own and I have to maintain a subscription? We are seriously going backwards.

$30 to see a movie when it's just released, along the lines of buying a ticket to see a movie in a movie theater when it's just released (which in that case you don't even have the ability to watch again without paying more).

I don’t know if this has been answered yet but I understand you have to be a Disney+ subscriber and still pay the $30 to watch the movie.

It sounds like even after paying the $30 if you stop the Disney+ subscription you lose access to the movie you paid $30 for, is that correct?

If that is the case is a total rip off!
If I cancel my membership and then renew/sign up again in a year do I get access to the movie I paid $30 for or do I have to pay another 30 to watch it again?

By that time the movie will be included and available to all Disney+ subscribers.

If you pay to go see a movie in a theater when it's just released, and then want to watch it again, would you need to pay for another ticket again? Is that a ripoff?

First a movie ticket doesn’t cost me $30 second if I am paying for a subscription AND another $30 over that I expect the rights to be able to watch the movie anytime I want after that. There should be an option to pay $40/50 and be able to own the rights to view it permanently without the lifetime subscription Requirement

"owning" it for the life of your apple+ subscription doesn't really mean much.

Being an entirely disney produced and owned movie, means it'll eventually come to disney+ normally; be it 6 months or whatever. $30 is effectively see it up to 6 months before anyone else.

I understand that they were expecting to take 1bn+ from the box office, and this is the best they could come up with while many cinemas are closed due to covid; but surely it would have been better to have just held off the premiere until next year.

You aren't paying to own it, you are paying to have early access to it (like paying to go see it in a movie theater).

Someone needs to go first, Mulan is it, all the movies need to get into movie theaters again. The D+ premier access is just a alternative for people impacted by closed theaters and desire to see this. There are other movies that will be coming out in the next month also. :)

Well, you can also lose the physical copies.
This was a big dumb response lol. You can only blame yourself if you lose a physical copy. But having a physical copy allows you to make your own lossless digital copy. That you can store on an external drive/NAS or cloud storage.

Umm it's really not a bad deal considering how this is a theatrical release and generally speaking if you go to the movies, you're going with at least 1-2 people which easily makes up for the $30/$35 price tag. Combine that will the fact that you can watch it limitless times during that month (if you don't want to maintain disney plus). Presumably it will eventually become part of the regular Disney+ catalog and/or be possible to rent/buy in the traditional sense (if this is still possible with disney movies).
I get where Disney is coming from with charging $30 as a “theatrical” release since you would be watching it with friends/family members. But most people are going to be watching this on their computers with headphones and it’s def not the same experience since I don’t have a crazy theater room with Dolby Atmos. And even if you watch it on your TV most people Probably don’t have surround sound speakers and some may just use the built-in speakers. At least if I wait for it to come out on 4K Blu-ray I actually own the movie. But we will see how it goes. I’m sure a lot of people will pay the $30 to get early access to it. It’s just not something I would personally do

All Upcoming Disney Movies

The little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch, The Sword in the Stone, Pinocchio, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, Peter Pan & Wendy, Robin Hood, Hercules.
The only live-action Robin Hood that the world needs was released in 1938. And I don't care about the others but if they mess up Lilo & Stitch, they're going to have a lot to answer for.

If you pay for tickets to watch a movie in a movie theater, how many times, over how long a period of time, do you get to watch it? One time, for the two hours(ish) noted by the showtime on your ticket. This is a movie-ticket-equivalent for a first-run movie. You pay $30 per household (vs $10-$20 per person in a traditional theater), and you get to watch it as many times as you want, as long as you have entrance to the venue (Disney+).

If you don't like these terms, you're quite welcome to wait a couple months until its "theater run" (virtual in the US, physical everywhere else that dealt with the pandemic properly), then you can use all the other normal routes: buy it on BluRay, or buy it online from iTunes or similar, or watch it on HBO or similar if Disney makes a deal with such a premium streaming service, or wait for it to show up on Netflix or similar, or, still later, wait for it to arrive at your local library or on broadcast TV, and watch it for free.

Too many people here getting all righteously indignant about Disney+ offering something new. If it wasn't for this pandemic, you wouldn't have this choice available, you'd have to pay for real tickets in a physical theater if you wanted to see it during its theater run. Stop feeling entitled to get every new movie Disney releases at no additional cost just because you subscribed to their streaming service for their existing movies.

I’m still not really getting these “live action” remakes, and my tween daughter isn’t interested either. Does Disney have any plans for any animation?

There are some in the works...

Because of the Coronavirus COVID-19 many movies have postponed release dates.
The only movie, that can come to theaters this Autumn is Soul.

Soul (2020)
Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)
Raya and The Last Dragon (2021)
Bob's Burgers: The Movie (2021)
Nimona (2022)
Zootopia 2, maybe even 3th part (2022, 2023 or later)

I would dispute the suggestion that "most people" will be "watching on their computers with headphones". Nobody I know watches movies that way. It's all on the TV in the living room, often with a soundbar or similar.

And I'm guessing that a lot of people who have the means are, or will be, looking at upgrading their in-home viewing experience, with larger TVs (if they don't already have a large one), and better speakers, as, for better or worse, this is likely the future of watching movies, for at least the next year or so.

So let me get this straight, you ALREADY have to be a paying Disney+ subscriber, and ON TOP OF THAT, you have to pay $30 to watch the movie?

You can't just pay $30 to watch it by itself like people did with the Trolls movie a while back?

What a blatant and ridiculous cash grab. Sadly I think many people will fall for it and Disney will make a fortune, because people are so starved for new content during this pandemic and those who are still gainfully employed likely have a lot of extra cash from not being able to.. well, do anything. :(
Yea $30 is already pushing it without also requiring the sub. It should be standalone and a bit cheaper.

Isn't this like twice the price of a theater ticket?
6x if you go to AMC on a Tuesday. Problem is you are golden if you have like 30 people over to watch or have bigger families, but as per the norm, the single and couples without kids get the shaft.
[automerge]1598275700[/automerge]
Except in a normal release you're not expected to provide your own theatre.
Exactly. AMC Tuesday would cost my wife and I $10, and we would have a good screen and sound.

Watch the trailers, read the reviews, if it seems likely suitable then order it for $30 and have the parents preview it at home and decide whether the kids get to watch it. It’s a gamble, but then so are many things. That money the parents would have spent to see it in the theater would also have been a gamble. Heck, for most movies, you’re paying up front taking the gamble that you’ll enjoy the movie. Also, $10 for both parents to see it? For early in the run of a major motion picture? That seems like a highly unrealistic ticket price of $5/adult. I’m guessing either you’re only sending one parent, or the cost is/was substantially more than $10. So the $10 vs $30 part of the argument doesn’t really hold up.

Frankly, if more people went to movies based upon “from the reviews, this looks to be a really compelling/interesting story”, rather than, “it’s part 7 of the trilogy and/or a remake of an 80’s TV show of course I’ll go”, then we might start getting a higher caliber of movies. Studios try very hard to make movies that they think people will pay to go see.
AMC Tuesdays are $5

True, if it’s just you, then it doesn’t cost $30 for a movie ticket. Most people go to see movies with other people, though.

In any event, the $30 gets you the following things a movie ticket does NOT get you:

1) the ability to have multiple people see the movie. For $30 at a movie theater, you’re probably looking at 2 tickets. Maybe 3 for a matinee. With the Disney offer, you can have as many people as you can fit in your living room see the movie.

2) the ability to see the movie as many times as you want. $30 at a movie theater allows a family to see the movie maybe once, or an individual to see it 2 or 3 times.

3) the ability to enjoy snacks and beverages without a 500% markup

4) the ability to not have to step through spilled popcorn and soda to get to your seat

5) the ability to be guaranteed a seat centered on the screen, etc.

6) the ability to watch it when you want, instead of when the theater says it’s showing, and without ads and trailers.

The $30 also gets you the following things a DVD/Bluray does not get you:

1) the ability to see the movie on ”opening day”

And when you to takeout or delivery of food from a restaurant you essentially provide your own restaurant, but do you somehow pay less for the food? If anything you can end up paying even more at times. Hardly a new or surprising concept there.
