How about the headless iMac??
Do you think it will have a G5 option  that would be very nice :D

Definitely not at the planned introductory price point. Doubt that it will have a design that would accommodate a G5. Maybe by the time that a G6 comes out and all the other products are G5.

I also doubt that there will be options that allow you to "upgrade" the processor. After all, the proposed headless iMac seems to be intended for entry level users. These users probably would not miss any of the advance features of the G5 chipset. If they were to miss those features, they wouldn't choose the headless iMac in the first place.

pBook

I've been wanting a pBook for a long time now, and it just happens that next week I am going to have about $2000 freed up to buy one. My problem is that Apple will probably slightly upgrade the pBook at MWSF and then drop a new model at WWDC this summer. Would you wait for WWDC or just get whatever they put out after MWSF? The thing is, I don't think that I will be able to keep that $2000 just sitting in the bank for 6 months. I would probably end up buying an HDTV or something else with it. Another thing is that I have no problem with the model that is out there right now, sure its not a G5, but its not slow either, so I'm torn... Any ideas? Thanks.

If you've got no probs with the current powerbook, then you probably don't have any problem with the ibooks. Get an ibook - they perform nearly as fast (not like U can tell a difference) and use the extra money for your HDTV.

I'm in the same situation as you, but i need the fastest CPU/GPU i can get. Right now the PowerBook is unjustifiablly more expensive than the iBook, and offers little more for the extra 1k. So i'm waiting for an upgrade to the Powerbook... it's really my only choice. I think you'd be happy as a puppy with the iBook though... doesn't sound like you're a demanding user.

As much as it sounds like it, I am a pretty demanding user. I'm going to be doing video and audio editing on the machine, but I just want a pBook so bad that I don't care, heh... :D

There better be an announcement on new pbs soon. Every day that passes makes me think that a small g4 upgrade will happen and that they are holding off for a major revision. Apple is a company that wants to stay on the cutting edge, and to wait this long on an upgrade to their pro portable line means that something is up. They could have done a small upgrade to the pbs in November if they were planning on a big WWDC release. So wait a month or two.

Don't spend money on a "HD"TV anyway. There is no standard High Def broadcasting format yet, so it's not worth spending your money on a tv like that since high definition doesn't really exist.

What?! I'm gonna watch Lost and Alias in HD tonight and "24" on Sunday night, and the NFL playoffs, and Super Bowl, and I already watched some bowl games, golf, movies... all in HD. But I just went out and bought stuff from the store. Guess I just got lucky since all this doesn't really exist yet.

Dream world :D

Well... I've decided to live in my fantasy world where they are announcing G5 pBooks at MWSF. :D

If you are in need of a PowerBook now, then I would go ahead and purchase after MWSF. The current PowerBook is a great machine. I know what you mean about money burning a hole in your pocket. Just think you will have six months of enjoyment with the new PowerBook. There is no guarantee that another upgrade will be available around WWDC.

i imagine that i will end up ordering one as soon as they update at mwsf.

but if i'm spending $3000 canadian on a computer i'm hoping it'll last me through four years of university.

for processor-intensive work, i'll be doing some video editing with final cut, maybe a little photoshop and indesign.

just kind of worried because of possible future system requirements, especially if this is the last g4 model.

Sad if they don't get a new powerboook out next week... Intel has alread annountced their next gen centrino chips at CES 2005.....

Intel's Centrino has an advantage because they market a separate chip for the thin/light computer... the big, powerful comptuers use P4s or Athlon64s. Apple unifies their line of powerbooks and just uses one chip so the big/powerful 17"er uses the same CPU as the 12" small, light version.

I guess my opinion on the powerbook is that if apple is going to take its sweet time, that's fine, but once it gets here, it needs to be a real competitor, not some low clocked G5. Take the Powermac G5s for example. Apple was so far behind the times with their sily dual 1.42 ghz G4s... Nobody wanted those for performance. HOWEVER... once the G5 came out, apple was a contendor. Let's hope these PBs, whenever they get here, can make it happen.

well, if the mwsf updated powerbooks are ~1.7ghz, and include a number of upgrades to make up for the fact that it's still a g4 - such as 9800m, faster hd, etc. - then a wwdc-released powerbook g5/7448/8461/whatever must be at least 1.8ghz and will include the updates in the mwsf pb - they wouldn't go backwards. a 1.8ghz g5 wouldn't be too bad at all, nor would a 2.0ghz 7448. i can't remember when 8461s are actually being produced, but unfortunately i see apple going all g5 instead of dual cores.

thought about it for a long time, and decided to skip buying this update (if it's as reported by AI), and will wait till june i guess.

if the shipping is delayed too much, i can always cancel and try to grab one of the last gen ones. long as i have something by september.

Is the current thought that Apple should have the revised PBooks (assuming here) ready to ship or at least a quick turnaround for shipping, or is it assumed that they will make everyone wait for a few more months to actually get the new stuff?

I am itching for a new something, however I *must have* a *Book by late Feb.
Anyway, looking forward to next week, can't wait!

Hope they will be good

As you said about the cpu's of pc laptops they have options maby the new PB will have a G5 top model and Dual Core G4 for the smaller once  or speed bumed G4 and Dual Core G4 at the top

That is quite a turn around. I would say that you have made a smart decision. If you don't really need the machine now, it's best to wait. A PowerBook released at WWDC should definitely be ready for deliver so that you will have it prior to September. Then you will have a PowerBook that should last you for your four years at university.

was mainly worried about delays similar to those after dual 2.5 g5 were released - i would imagine that apple will be swamped with orders for a new generation of pbs. but yeah, i think i've made the right choice too.

i'm buying whatever Apple comes out with as far as PBs since I can always ebay it later. I got a 1ghz ibook in june $950 after the student discount $1100 with AP and more ram. I sold it on ebay when the 1.2ghz ibook came out for $1250 buy it nowI made $40 on it! (after ebay\paypal fees\Tax) I did not want to get another ibook... since ibooks get dirty! i'm a PB man ;) since my discount was reset in july (hehe tricky huh) In oct I got a 12' PB 1.33ghz for $1399 (after SD) I upgraded the ram to 768mb for $100. I sold it on ebay just before christmas for $1699... heck as I see it dumb people are paying me to use Apples! I am up about $100 and I got to use the computers for 7 months!!! :D  (as a note when I sold them I left Adobe CS, MX 2004, and MS Office 2004 installed so I guess they got a deal to, lol) oh and I have plenty of famly members who are studets and use PCs so a shortage of discounts is not and issue with me haha.

that 12" powerbook

what is the likelyhood that the prediction at the beggining of this thread for the 12" pb being lowered to $1399 is true? would that mean that the same edu discount available now (200 off list) would apply bringing it to $1199?

if not, think the current gen 12" pb would be lowered to around $1200? or at that point is it just worth getting a current gen ibook?

With all due respect to the person that posted the "rumor" and to all of you beacuse i only read the first 250 posts before I thought to check his post history.

It turns out that his only two posts on this thread account for 67% of the posts hes made on this board. His other one post was his "sources" G5 tower.

Jokesters like this guy are not reliable sources. I can imagine we will see a new iPod mini, maybe a new eMac (short CRT, 1.33-1.5 G4), and a crapload of new software. This expo gives me a consumer-oriented feeling, if there were to be new powerbooks, we would have seen them already, or we wont see them for a few months... just a thought
