PCI Express will come in the next update... DDR2 still isn't that big of a deal yet...

Why is DDR2 not so big??
It gives the ram greater bandwith and the speed up to 800Mhz instead of 400!!

I said "YET". Obviously DDR2 is a great technology, but its yields arent the best yet, it isn't being mass produced, and even though the memory is twice as fast, most CPUs don't even utilize that extra memory channel bandwith yet. Obviously DDR2 will come to the mac platform, but I'd be very surprised if it made it into the next set of updates...

OK sorry about that !

dual cores would be awesome, but they won't even be testing in january.
My take: Freescale isn't planning the 7448 and e600s for PowerBooks; maybe for the consumer macs sometime down the line. The 7448 won't even sample until first half 2005 (which obviously could be as late as June), the e600s not until second half 2005. So the dual-cores won't actually ship until first half 2006 at best. We all know Motorola's history with fabrication. At this point, I'm not holding my breath for these things to actually make it to market.

Apple is definitely moving the PowerBooks to G5s. The 7447 is pretty much maxed out and there is too much of a gap until the 7448s are ready. My guess is that Apple's been planning to introduce G5 PowerBooks sometime this spring or summer. Remember that a while ago that Steve Jobs went on the record saying that they'd like to have a G5 laptop by the end of 2004. IBM is about 6 months behind on the G5 development schedule so I'm thinking mid-2005 for the G5 PowerBooks.

I certainly hope that you are right, it will make the day of many on this forum. The only problem is that Steve Jobs also said that we would already have a 3 GHz Power Mac. Apple definitely needs to upgrade there line before they fall further behind.

No they are not. Don't be silly. :D
Don't know if you're serious or not, but Apple has come out on four separate occasions to confirm that they are working on a G5 laptop:

Jon Rubinstein
David Russell
Tom Boger
Steve Jobs
Greg Joswiak

Granted, none of these interviews give any clues to when (except when Jobs says he would like to introduce one by the end of 2004). As I said before, I'm betting on this spring/summer, mainly because there aren't any other processors scheduled to ship anytime soon. Of course, there'll have been no official announcements about a low-power G5 either; my explanation for this is that this low-power G5 is ONLY for Apple and hence Apple can request that IBM keep mum on this. For the next 6-9 months, Apple has one of three options: 1) try to eek out an extra 100 mhz or so out of the current G4; 2) introduce a G5 laptop; or 3) sit on their thumbs and do nothing. Considering that PB sales are down and they haven't updated them in 9 months, I don't think they can afford option 3) for very long. So my guess: a minor minor G4 upgrade by the end of this month and a G5 PowerBook come WWDC.

It was sarcasm. The original poster just pointed out a statement that was so blaringly obvious, it became a great target for mockery.

 I want all the Mac's to be G5's :D hehehhe

So does everyone else, then there would be the need impetus for developers to use 64 Bit architecture. Definitely the iBook will be the last to get G5.

There's a vague reference over at Appleinsider that Powerbook updates could be coming at the end of February - no details on specs though.

Late feb = no mwsf? :(

Well, if they are G5s... You'd think that steve would want to have a big show for them so i'd be surprised if G5s were just released without a show...

They didn't say at the end of February, they said by the end of February. Given the delay on the release of any major new Apple product, it would probably be shipping by late February. However, the latter statement by me is looking at the AppleInsider report optimistically. I'm sure they will have more details shortly.

Just a dilemma

I am not sure, but just counting all the rumors of products that will be announced during MWSF, how can SJ put that all in a keynote of only 1 1/2 hour? And if it all may be true, one can dream, I have to make choices what to buy. Wife just doesn't let me buy it all.....

Please forget about the PB G5

Well it's no surprise if new PBs are not announced at MWSF. Since all we can expect are speed-bumps, it would make sense to sacrifice valuable keynote time for such an announcement. They need the time to show off the exciting things.

How about the headless iMac??
Do you think it will have a G5 option  that would be very nice :D

Um last time i checked the dual 2.0ghz and the dual 2.5ghz has PCIe.

Welcome to our forum

but no

They do not have PCIe they have PCI-X and AGP 8X PRO
PCIe si PCI Express and is only avaible for PC at the moment, but it will come to mac as well :D it is 16X instead of 8 so is way faster :p

They need to take some time to show off something for the PBooks, they are grossly aged and in need of an update.

I agree with many here @ macrumors that even if there is a new version or even just a bump, it does not make the "older" books any less capable, simply there is a faster version which theoretically has a slightly longer shelflife before *requiring* an update.

Personally, I am just waiting to see what comes out because I have never purcahsed a Mac before. I will be selecting some form of a PBook in the near future, but why do it this instant when a possible speedbump could be around the corner? The PBook customer market (shown here and elsewhere) is disappointed with the current lineup in comparison to other Apple products....so taking a little valuable time would be wise, even if it is only 5min total to talk about a few speed bumps and changes. Heck, if they made both ram slots user-upgradable in the 12in, I would buy right this instant.
