I got the black iPhone 5 on launch day and this is after only one week of the phone going in and out of my pocket. Mine has been naked as well.

this is what happens when you drop it from the pant pocket. murphy payed me a visit, the only exposed areas of the phone, are where the ground decided to make contact while it hit the ground bouncing. lol. oh well. might as well rock it naked now. btw, this is a rangke slim case made by rearth (compare to incipio feather). super clean looking, but very minimal protection. black still rocks. well now its black and silver.

I agree with what you said. I've been a Mac user for 10 years and notice the slip in quality control, and in some cases, fit and finish. I got lucky with my phone.

That's speaks to what you're talking about. Back in the "good old days" you didn't have to worry about getting lucky with a perfectly functioning device. It was rare to have something go wrong. I feel like Apple is spread too thin. They try to do too many things and corners get cut. It's a shame. I'm not sure it has to be like this but for what ever reason, it is.

Very well said.

The point you made about spread too thin has been something I ponder from time to time.

One would think (all too logically) that with all the cash and resources Apple has, they would grow the company to maintain the exemplary quality of the past. It would only add to the Brand Value, and positive chatter in the blogosphere.

Once upon a time I would always feel free to suggest Apple products to my friends and associates. Knowing they would be impressed and highly satisfied with their purchases.

Now it's not very safe to do, it's sad really. I enjoyed the times when I could wholeheartedly suggest any Apple product to those who asked me.

That amount of damage after one week of usage is unsat. Apple exec says that's normal and it is, that's why they should have used a different process or material. I hate that for all fellow iPhone 5 owners.

This cannot be normal. At this rate the phone will be more silver than black after a few months. If your going to make people sign a two year contract the phone should stay looking good for the majority of the contract time. I'm going to get this one replaced and try another black one. If that one shows the same wear I will take it back and swap it for a white one.

For two _decades_ I used to enjoy the purchase experience you've had.
...

The challenge of today's Apple experience is largely noticed by the millions of others like myself, that are used to impeccable quality. It would be very refreshing to no longer have to share & report Apples decline in the various areas that it exists. Yet I do understand the compromises Apple has elected to make even if I disagree with them.

My experience has been different. My employer used to use Macs in the mid-1990s. The PowerBook 520c and 540C models were the most common. I can't tell you how many I saw back then that had batteries that would pop out, or exposed wires around the hinges (as the cheap plastic frequently broke).

The Polycarb iBook and then MacBook were more durable, but they also suffered from yellowing over time (my mother had a 2002 iBook that yellowed, and a 2006 MacBook that eventually developed a crack in the case). However, my MacBook Airs have been impeccable, and so far my iPhone 5 is holding up well.

I'm sure over time(and well before 2 years) the white will scratch just the same although it might not be as noticeable. I will have the next iPhone in a year from now so I'm not so worried

That may very well be but at least it won't stand out so much like it does on the black one. I re-sell my phones to get the new models as they come out so I take very good care of my iPhones. If your going to use the look and the design of a product as one of your major selling points then you need to make sure they are of great quality! I love apple products and will continue to buy them but they had to know of this issue as they tested the prototypes.

I suggest you consider an exchange. Yours is appears to be one of those with improperly applied anodizing. There's no way it should wear that quickly and most don't.

My black iP5 is still mint after dropping once on tile & after hitting it against a door knob hard.

Same for me. And many of my friends got a perfect iPhone 5. So far they are not having any scratches, scuffs using it naked.

Cases that don't cover the top and bottom are a waste of space and money. Looks nice though.

My iPhone 5 (32GB black) is doing very well too. It was damage free right out of the box and still looks the same as day one. The back brushed up against the pocket rivets of my jeans a couple of times and there's not a mark to show for it. I'm very happy. :)

Same here. Still looks great. I am very careful with it though.

I have a ringke slim too. Much better than the feather in quality and looks

My black 32G came outta da box naked and spotless and a week later it's still naked and spotless.

Coming from a 3GS, I'm just blown away by the slickness and speed of ... well everything.

Mine's been naked all week and tbh these forums are convincing me to keep it that way. I did just get a ColcaSac pouch to slip it in when it goes into my bag, but there hasn't been a case on it all week. No damages whatsoever. I did get Applecare+ so I think I'm just going to rock the phone naked and use Applecare to replace it if it gets really really bad.

The phone is just so beautiful, and I've gotten so used to using it without a case.

I have ordered the Desmay Slight, and we'll see if I like that, otherwise I'm handing it off to my brother.

Most specifically, I was addressing out of the box quality.

I've worked in a large scale (International) cross platform engineering, environment for years. Each year upon receiving our new PowerBooks, without fail they all came out of the box looking like a new computer. No nicks, no scratches, no ill fitting parts, nothing but excellent quality. Likewise their performance was up to the standard of the day.

Now if we are talking about overall experience, for say the first year, then yes, just like any other product, there were some that had issues. There were certain models that were far more durable than others. That's to be expected of any product line.

But today, from the very start, the unboxing experience is far from consistent.

The problem is that Apple is becoming more popular. In 2008 they sold 11 Million iPhones, but in 2011, they sold 98 Million iPhones, so if there is a 0.5% failure rate then that means in 2008 there was 55,000 faulty phones, but now that means there is 490,000 faulty phones.

And as we all know on these forums, you rarely hear about the good purchases, only the bad so you're hearing a lot more claims of faulty devices. It doesn't mean the quality is getting worse, it just means there's a lot more of them.

I stopped by the Apple store today and checked out some of the black models and the 3 I looked at were all scuffed on the sides and on the back. Hopefully Apple can figure this out and the next batch will be better
