I agree with what you said. I've been a Mac user for 10 years and notice the slip in quality control, and in some cases, fit and finish. I got lucky with my phone.
That's speaks to what you're talking about. Back in the "good old days" you didn't have to worry about getting lucky with a perfectly functioning device. It was rare to have something go wrong. I feel like Apple is spread too thin. They try to do too many things and corners get cut. It's a shame. I'm not sure it has to be like this but for what ever reason, it is.
I got the black iPhone 5 on launch day and this is after only one week of the phone going in and out of my pocket. Mine has been naked as well.
For two _decades_ I used to enjoy the purchase experience you've had.
...
The challenge of today's Apple experience is largely noticed by the millions of others like myself, that are used to impeccable quality. It would be very refreshing to no longer have to share & report Apples decline in the various areas that it exists. Yet I do understand the compromises Apple has elected to make even if I disagree with them.
This cannot be normal. At this rate the phone will be more silver than black after a few months. If your going to make people sign a two year contract the phone should stay looking good for the majority of the contract time. I'm going to get this one replaced and try another black one. If that one shows the same wear I will take it back and swap it for a white one.
I'm sure over time(and well before 2 years) the white will scratch just the same although it might not be as noticeable. I will have the next iPhone in a year from now so I'm not so worried

How can the phone go from a blue to a silver from a little light?
this is what happens when you drop it from the pant pocket. murphy payed me a visit, the only exposed areas of the phone, are where the ground decided to make contact while it hit the ground bouncing. lol. oh well. might as well rock it naked now. btw, this is a rangke slim case made by rearth (compare to incipio feather). super clean looking, but very minimal protection. black still rocks. well now its black and silver.
My iPhone 5 (32GB black) is doing very well too. It was damage free right out of the box and still looks the same as day one. The back brushed up against the pocket rivets of my jeans a couple of times and there's not a mark to show for it. I'm very happy.![]()

Most specifically, I was addressing out of the box quality. My experience has been different. My employer used to use Macs in the mid-1990s. The PowerBook 520c and 540C models were the most common. I can't tell you how many I saw back then that had batteries that would pop out, or exposed wires around the hinges (as the cheap plastic frequently broke).
The Polycarb iBook and then MacBook were more durable, but they also suffered from yellowing over time (my mother had a 2002 iBook that yellowed, and a 2006 MacBook that eventually developed a crack in the case). However, my MacBook Airs have been impeccable, and so far my iPhone 5 is holding up well.
