ok nice got it, so here's what I did:
1. Turn off your existing phone completely, in my case it was an original iPhone.
2. Then make sure your iphone 3gs is disconnected from the computer.
3. Turn off your 3gs
Both phones should be off at this point.
4.Turn back on your 3GS and it should be activated

Hope this helps.

worked for me thanks for the fix!!

I'm having the same issue. My first voice control command was "activate my damn phone"! :)

On the phone with AT&T, apparently there's issues on their end with my phone not even being known to be trying to activate. Who knows. Might actually get something changed.
Alex

Let us know what they say!

Wow this is annoying... Just to make sure I didn't do anything wrong, I have an old iphone and just got the 3gs and its still trying to activate. I don't have to place a SIM in it or anything correct? Or am I supposed to switch the old one to the new phone. I was under the impression that the new phones are shipping with sims, but just want to make sure

Going from original to iPhone G3s as well. When old one turns back on after turning it off I still have service. The 3Gs just says activating when I turn it on but never does anything. AT&T fails again!

Yeah, I'm stuck there too. Upgrading from a HTC TyTn II on AT&T to the 3GS; I didn't swap sim cards, though I might try that in a bit. I've been waiting for a couple hours now, with no luck.

Maybe it's the Atlanta servers (I see you're in Georgia, or at least a Dawg fan).

I thought at first it was my mistake since I didn't notice my old number was on the registration page until I hit the submit button. I tried restoring the phone to see if I could then reregister it, but no luck. It's syncing all my music now (20GB worth), and after that, I'm going to try the suggestion of turning off my old iPhone, turning off the 3GS, and then turning the 3GS back on. Seems like some people were successful with that approach.

I'm in Denver and not working for me, getting the 48 hours notice. The on/off did not work for me, but good luck!

Same thing here. No big deal as long as my other phone works. 48 hours would suck though, I can deal with a few hours but that's it.

I called AT&T again. They said that the iTunes servers were slammed. Just wait it out. According to them it doesn't matter whether your old phone is on or off. When the new one finishes processing activation the old phone's service will cease working.

Still - it's been almost 3 hours for me.

Did anyone swap the SIM cards from their old iPhone into their new iPhone after they got the activation error?

I did that, and my new phone works fine now... I'm just wondering if at some point in the next 48 hours, the new SIM will activate and I'll have to switch them again? Does anyone know?

Stuck on iTunes screen saying "Please wait while we process your request". Any thoughts?

I'm near Chicago.

Mine took almost 3 hours -- just be patient

I was very frustrated, and worried about waiting 48 hours, but it just popped active after 3 hours. the old phone stopped working. all is good now

Yeah, almost 5 hours for me. Don't really know what to do, trying to restore and reactivate and such. AT&T didn't even know i was upgrading when I called :\
Alex

I'm outside Chicago. Took about 5 minutes of processing in iTunes and then I got the "needs more time" message. 2 minutes later I was activated.

Heh, too late, already started restoring. Ah well.
