I was just asked to take out the battery and put it back in LOL. Tried to explain you can't remove the battery and the service rep doesn't believe me.

Try again, it finally activated for me. They need to get your iccid and imei number. Be That Guy, it worked for me :p.
Alex

Haha, I'll try when I get off work. I'm at the office and I don't want my co-workers to think I've lost my mind by calling AT&T repeatedly.

I called Apple/AT&T 3 times. It is totally luck of the draw. First two people were very nice, had no idea what to do but wait for "the cloud" to activate me.

Third person?

"5 hours, that's ridiculous. I will activate you right now." Bam, activated. Bam, email in my inbox telling me I am activated.

I'm on the phone now with ATT they said my data plan was setup to be effective July 12th and they did not have IMEI information for the new phone.

The rep is working on fixing things now but if your iPhone hasn't activated in a short amount of time I would call to make sure everything is correct on your account.

BAM! A whole new galaxy in my pocket!

Looks like reps are going to be busy today. Come to think of it, iTunes failed activating my first iPhone as well. That system really doesn't work very well.

how do i get back to activation?.. not paying attention to what it said, i canceled it on the phone the first time

Can we pop the sim card from our 3G into the 3GS until it no longer works, then switch? Just a thought.

I somehow expected this to happen. I mean, imagine 300,000+ people trying to activate at the same time thru Apple Servers. It's like a massive DDoS.

Course the server is going to choke. It's a miracle the server can even respond back telling you "sorry, I iz choking, I haz failed"

And people, be grateful you got the iPhone (thats the hard part). The rest is downhill.

After waiting an hour or so for my phone to activate and no luck I decided to swap the sim cards with my old 2G iPhone. Working great now!

I did the same thing. After waiting for two hours, I swapped the sim card from my old 3G and now my 3GS is working. Does this mean that my phone is activated with my old sim card? Is it possible that the new sim card will still become activated and my old sim will stop working?

Thats what Im doing.

My wife has a 2G that we upgraded. It still hasn't activated for 3 hours now so I just took my sim from my 3G and put it in the 3GS and then took her sim for her 2G and put it in my 3G. So far its working. If it breaks later I will call AT&T to have them fix it.

What worked for me was a soft reset of the iPhone: hold down the Home button + Sleep/Wake button at the same time until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Dunno, will have to wait and see. At least if it becomes an issue i'm sure a quick call to customer support should fix, but I am going to keep my new sim with me just in case...

I tried to call as well and the rep I spoke with told me that he was told NOT to manually activate the phones at this time and that doing so would only slow down the process for everyone else. I call BS on this one. I'm going to try to power cycle my iPhone a couple more times to see if that helps.

its funny that you guys just posted this because i thought of the same thing once i heard there were activation problem. i just got off the phone with att and asked them if i could put my old sym in - they said yes - but to stop by a store at some point to have the sim updated with the new 3gs so they know that i have it - hummm i wonder if there is any advantage to not telling them i have the 3gs?

we're tecno nerds don't tell us we have to wait 2 days to activate our new toys - we'll come up with a way around it!!!!!!!

Just keep calling till you get someone competent. I have someone working with me now who seems to know what they are doing.

The AT&T call volume has increased. My hold time was originally three minutes when I tried earlier and now it's up to 15. I predict the AT&T reps are going to get a memo soon instructing them not to activate iPhones manually...
