Here I am with my new iPhone and I can't quite feel the same, compared to when I first got it. When it was all new and undiscovered.

I dropped it the other day and joined the elite group of shattered iPhone owners.

Membership into this group, 'Shattered Dreams' was easy, all I had to do was accidentally drop it from 2 1/2 ft. With this I got to experience the sinking feelings of destroying the Oracle.

Sitting at the Genius bar, me on my side, Geniuses on the other, serving up loads of cock and bull tails about how they can't repair the Iphone etc cost me the most expensive drink I had to swallow, £140.

I shan't be ordering from this bar again.

Imagine getting a round in whilst sitting at the bar, there must have been about 6 others who like me, who were looking to getting their shattered phones fixed.

The toxicity of my drink made me question was I right to be annoyed at how fragile my £600 iphone was. I mean people drop things everyday, phones especially.

Surely you cant be expected to drink from the Genius bar every time you drop your iPhone.

In America they have Apple care plus which safeguards you against 2 accidental incidents to your phone, here in Uk , well we haven't got round to that yet.

Perhaps I've accidentally joined another group without realising it having written this post, Apple doubters.

Yesterday I wanted to make a t-shirt to wear outside the apple store warning all the mummies, daddies and expectant children queuing to buy the phone for Christmas about how fragile the iPhone really is.

MIne lasted me 17 days. I hope your's last's longer.

Please join this group and pass it on, tweet it what ever you can to see just how many out there have experienced the same shattered glass. Maybe Apple will take note.

PS.
Its not really the Oracle, Siri doesn't work 90% of the time. Here in England Siri says No! (referring to the Little Britain comedy line Computer say's No.)

Just so I'm perfectly clear on the matter... your love affair with the 4S is over because you're butthurt over the fact that you dropped your phone and subsequently, logically too, had to pay to have it replaced?

OP is very lucky Apple only charges $200 to replace a shattered iPhone.

If the same thing happened w/ Samsung/HTC might they just might tell him to piss off and buy a brand new phone for $600+!!!

Don't kid yourself. It would take more than a drop to shatter a Samsung. And that's a guaranteed FACT. Bottomline the iPhone is not designed to be the slightest bit shock resistant. Dumbest materials used for a mobile device. If your gonna use glass, better make is some really good glass. Like Gorilla Glass.Forget the plastic casing of other phones, just look at the face down drop tests. Glass screen Vs Glass Screen. iPhone loses every time. So much for premium materials used.

You've now joined the: DOH!, I should've put a case on it membership.

C'mon ..... front and back are glass.

Wahahahahaha... So true, and wait till you shatter a Samsung or HTC phone and see how much you pay for a replacement. Some of the clumsiest amongst us who have had owned and dropped different phones can attest to what I have said.

I have Vaja iVolution Top for my 3GS, 4 and 4S, and I have lost count how many times I have dropped them (except 4S which is drop-free as of this moment). I'm happy to say they are dent-free and are good as new.

The analogy of Ferrari and iPhone is inappropriate since you need to have insurance before you can drive them (at least that's the case in my country). So if you get into an accident, you are somehow covered. You can always insured your phone likewise. Not getting a case is a big no no already, and not getting insurance on top of it because the premium of the insurance is too high is therefore not a reason to blame  for your carelessness.

You had choices, but decided against making those that protects and insures your phone, and now you are paying the price for it. It's that simple.

Plastic? Is it environmentally responsible? Either way  get called out by environmentalists and accident-proned iPhone users.

They said they can't repair the glass...? My friend shattered her iPhone 4 twice. First time was the back panel, second was the screen. Both times the genius bar repaired her iPhone for free!

I recently dropped my naked iPhone 4 on a hard concrete warehouse floor at about the same height as you dropped yours.

The feeling of dread was intense !

I ended up with just a scuffed edge which is only noticeable at close quarters.

I was fortunate but having to pay £140 is way better than the original price tag of £504 !

I'm reminded of an email response from Steve Jobs when a customer wrote him about Apple charging to replace his Macbook when he spilled his drink on it.

This is what happens when your MacBook Pro sustains water damage. They are pro machines and they don’t like water. It sounds like you’re just looking for someone to get mad at other than yourself.

I guess you would prefer if the iPhone was made out of a Nerf material that could survive a two store drop? I'm sure no one would complain about the quality of the construction then!

Really now, I don't use any case on my phone, and I'm fully prepared to pay for a replacement if I should drop it and it shatters. I am careful with my phone and the pleasure I get from enjoying a complete stainless steel and glass construction with daily use it worth it to me.

I swear people's logic must turn off when they sign onto these forums sometimes.

Dropped my phone on concrete about 4 days after I got it, it landed face down but thankfully my fabulous skull candy case meant not a mark on it :D since then have also dropped it numerous times on my hard wood floor still flawless.
They advertise it as armour for your phone and so far it's proving to be.

Hey, I think he meant IF you drop another manufacturer's device and it is broken beyond warranty coverage, it would be better to pay Apple $200 for a replacement vs buying a phone out of contract at $500+ with Samsung and others.

I do understand the point the OP is trying to make. Somehow I don't see a point of spending so much of accessories to 'protect' the phone and making it look ugly.

Currently, I have a couple screen protectors on my 4S, but nothing to protect against a drop. Afterall, it is just a phone. I want to use it, and not pamper it. However, I understand it is a choice that I make and I will face the consequence. "I break, I cry", I am prepared to suck it and not to regret about it.

Didnt know a case made a phone look ugly.

I did know however, a shattered glass front or back to an iphone is... uglier.

Case it.

A case does make some phones ugly. It takes away the beautiful construction and materials of the device. The iPhone was never made to be cased (unless you refer to a bumper). I will live with the fact that if I do break my phone, oh well, my fault.

Every single person I know with a 4 has shattered it at one point - which is kind of incredible. It's a design I'm not going near again.

Sorry, but that's a load of hooey. I know a bunch of friends with iPhone 4 and only one of them cracked the screen, and he is really rough with his stuff.

If the glass shattered randomly then you should wear a t-shirt outside of an Apple store. You're the one that dropped it so it is your fault. There are millions of people with iPhones that haven't had any issues because they don't drop it and/or use a case. The iPhone feels very solid compared to other phones due to the lack of plastic, but it is more susceptible to damage if dropped unfortunately. I'm not sure if this will be addressed with the new iPhone 5 design, but I don't have issues handling my iPhone.

I'm not sure if Siri is still in beta but it is a relatively new feature that requires a lot of user testing before they can iron out all the issues.

My 2yo daughter threw my brand new 4S into the floor yesterday, it survived without any damage at all actually.. I have dropped my previous iPhones into the floor a lot of times also and they have all survived without any noticeable damage. Maybe i'm just lucky, but i feel that they hold up rather well to be dropped!

you're just not dropping it properly :apple:

I think even just using a bumper case can be enough to prevent it from shattering, especially if it's just dropped from a couple feet. The bumper case is about as close as you can get to caseless phone (which admittedly looks better) and still get some protection.

So it seems that the geniuses in the US have it upon their discretion to replace a iPhone with a shattered screen gratis.

When I asked the geniuses here they told me a shattered screen voids the guarantee and the phone is no longer covered.

One rule for one side of the ocean and one for this side.

AppleCare plus in USA
Apple care in uk.

Many of you suggest getting a case, why's that, because the iPhone isn't robust enough to take a drop!

Imagine buying a product where you have to buy another accessorie just so you can protect it....

Trying to come up with some examples here of other products in the world.

Motorbike....crash helmet
Car: driving gloves, tyres, oil etc
Dishwasher: soap
iPhone: case....

Ok I get it.......

Nobody forced you to buy an iPhone. If it's construction doesn't live up to your standards, then you should have got something else. It's glass, you knew it's glass, now you want to be mad at someone other than yourself for it breaking.

This thread is ridiculous.

You knew it was fragile when you bought it. The thing is covered in glass. If you're someone who occasionally drops his expensive toys than you should get a case or be more careful. It's like buying a truck that you're going to be taking off road. If you know there's a chance it could get wrecked, you buy brush guards and insurance etc. You don't blame the dealer for not making something more durable.

I won't be buying an iPhone again, they simply aren't durable enough. Nice to look at though...

Did you know it was made out of glass when you bought it?

Did you drop it?

So it is Apple's fault?

I didn't know it was made of glass.

I didn't drop it, it was knocked off a table.

It's not Apples fault, but like I keep on repeating and people don't seem to get is that in the US there is a system setup for such eventualities.

Here in Uk there isn't.

If I lived I n the US I would have bought AppleCare plus, because as soon as I bought the phone I took out. Apple care, so it is reasonable I would have bought apple care plus.
