I hope the dramatic tone is for comedic effect. A glass phone breaking when dropped isn't exactly a surprise.

I can't stand the way bumpers and cases look so I take the risk with a "naked" iPhone. I don't care how much a drop would be my own fault, it's still heartbreaking to wreck a new and fairly expensive piece of tech. Though I know better than to blame the phone and then expect sympathy from this forum. :p

True I too would be upset but where I'm knocking the OP is with his dramatic tone that ends up in blame being placed on the phone and not his own hands.

My Ericsson T65 would survive a 2.5ft drop. Older phones are less fragile.
Actually, my Droid X survived a drop from about 4 feet. It had a few deep pits (scratches) from where it hit the ground and a scratch where it slid but it survived very well considering. I don't anticipate the iPhone surviving the same because it's glass.

I won't be buying an iPhone again, they simply aren't durable enough. Nice to look at though...

Home insurance should cover it.

Stop being a drama queen "My love affair with my Ferrari is over, it got destroyed when I ran it into a tree".

I don't think you can compare ramming a ferrari into a tree with dropping an iPhone. You are expected to drop a phone. You are not expected to drive into things in your car. Anyone who says your not expected to drop a phone is clearly delusional.

The OP is just making a point using british humour which is being lost on many.

Should the iPhone survive 9 out of 10 drops or should it smash on every single drop? eg take ten phones. Drop each one. How many are rendered useless?

I would t expect a 100% failure rate. If it was I'd say it's not fit for any other purpose than something to place on your mantelpiece and admire.

You're expected to drop a phone? Seriously?

Count me in as delusional.

I am not expected to drop my phone... nor do I expect to drop it.

It is made out of glass, I knew that when I bought it. If I am irresponsible enough to drop it, I expect it to break. If I thought I couldn't take proper care of it I would have bought a different phone, or I would have bought a case to protect it.

I wouldn't come on here stating the love affair was over. And complaining about a problem I caused myself.

Wake up people.... It's a poor design, that was never improved upon (in terms of design: NO, functionality perhaps) and doesn't live up to its marketing.
.......

Then WHY did you buy it? If you dont like the design, DONT BUY it.

Did you do so little research that this was all news to you when you opened the box? If so, that is also your fault just like dropping it was your fault. I dont make any high dollar/pound purchasing decision without thorough research.

I COMPLETELY expect that if I drop my phone it will shatter. And I am 100% OK with that. I would assume a poll would find that a large % of ip4 and ip4s owners expect or assume that a drop of a bare phone on a hard surface will result in broken glass... To expect otherwise is just foolish.

Of course your expected to drop it. It's an everyday carry object. It's not a desktop item. Next you'll be telling me you never drop money or your keys or your wallet or plastic cards or anything else you carry around. That's why I say it's expected. Because its a natural occurance of carrying stuff. It doesn't magically go away because its an iPhone. The laws of the universe don't suddenly sAy oh let's forget sods law , do not drop , it's an iPhone.
All the op is saying is he expected a bit more durability out of the iPhone. Especially when the glass was advertised as being special.

Most phones survive atleast a few drops

No I am not expected to drop it. And no, I dont drop my wallet or keys or plastic cards... It is called "paying attention to the world around you"

It's must be really great to have never dropped anything. I suggest a change of job. Maybe baseball or cricket or football. They will love you. And you will make millions!

But back in the real world. Next time you drop something, give a little thought to me ;)

Do I EVER drop things? Sure... Do I expect to regularly drop my phone (as you suggest)? No I don't because I take care of it. I know it is made of glass.

And if I do... then I expect it to break. And I am not going to be mad at Apple, the Genius Bar, or the Americans that get a better warranty.

While the OP is being a bit dramatic, I think most people are missing the point. All he wanted was an option for applecare + like we have in the US. And prior to applecare +, shattered screens were fixed for free more times than not. So, by not having the option to buy ac+, you'd think the geniuses would be more leniant.

No, he expected his phone not to break... Claimed he didnt know it was made of glass prior to the purchase. Said it wast built sturdy enough, claimed it was an outdated design...

THEN he wanted the Genius guys to replace it for him. Even in his last post, he blames gravity instead of carelessness.

Many of you accuse me of moaning, whining etc, whatever, I don't get it.

My plain and simple gripe with apple is their failure to address a well known design flaw in the rebranded iPhone 4

Wake up people, it's clever marketing. They rebranded an existing product and resold it again. Basic business model if your brand can get away with it and clearly they have twice. 3G: 3GS , 4g : 4gs

Apple design a great looking phone with a clear technological leap and advantage over their competition.

So the world goes mad for it

Brilliant, genius.

But wait oh you have to buy a case for it.

You don't buy a Ferrari and put it in a case.

Some of you mention the fashion of going naked as its some kind of trend. What's that about. You actually defending apple for a design flaw.

I put it to you that 90 percent of you are brain washed with hype which it clearly is.

Yep I still went out and bought it. Clearly my mistake. What an idiot. This was my first ever iPhone and I'm appalled by a product that can not survive a 2 1/2 ft fall.

I put it to you if you spent your energy addressing apple with what is clearly a DURABILITY issue, then we may be in a better position to get a new phone that addresses these issues.

The backplate is $29 to replace so I assume you broke the front. I got AppleCare + rather than uglify with a case.

I came in the thread to also say my love affair is over. Poor battery life, several features turned off, great deal of heat generated and Siri hasn't worked more than 25% of my attempts.

Hello, Galaxy Nexus.

Mate, it's a glass phone, pretty much edge to edge. It's fragile when naked™. End of.

I am no Apple apologist, believe me, but I expect that if I drop my naked iPhone, it's probably going to break. Its design seems intrinsic to its fragility but I liked it and bought it anyway.

My only real gripe is that Applecare+ is US only. That is irritating and makes it a lot riskier to go without a bumper and or case. Still, I choose to. My risk, my problem.

Woah, woah, woah. Oh, did I say woah yet? Well, woah. Hold on there, good sir.

At what point in time has dropping items that you might carry with you on a daily or semi-daily basis become an absolute and unavoidable law of the universe?

There's a chance that it will happen but in no way, shape, or form is it somehow absolutely inevitable that you'll drop any of the items you listed.
