So when my 8800GT gets here, I'm going to have to plug that cable in? If so, how hard is that going to be?

Not very hard, doubt you'll have to take the fan unit out. Even if you do need to resort to that, it's only two screws. Takes about 5 minutes the first time, and 30 seconds each time after that:D

is anybody got an answer on the second connection of the 8800gt
I'm getting the 8800gt card to replace the 2700 card.
Am i going to have problems second connection?

Hi rontheancient,

I scanned through the thread and didn't notice if this was asked yet, but what is the optical drive you have shown in the original set of photos? I too plan on getting myself a Mac Pro 8800 (Quad core) after the tax refund and would like to have two opticals in there. What did you buy or recommend?

And thanks for sharing!

So the BIG question. How loud is the fan on the 8800GT???? Can you hear it at all? Do the stop test with your finger, hold the fan on the card still and see if you can hear a difference. When done on the 2600 I hear no difference at all in a quiet room.
Indeed; I put a Zalman cooler on my G5 Quad's 7800GT because the stock fan was insufferable. Even that Zalman makes a bit of noise when gaming. I don't suppose you (the OP) have any point of comparison to give us some impression of how relatively noisy (or quiet) the fan on the 8800GT is?

I can say that the PC version of the 8800GT is very quiet. Much MUCH quieter than the X850 and X1900 series which had the double stacked fan (red one). Its loud the first second you start it but then its totally silent. I think the Mac version shoudl be the same because my card looks nearly identical so I'm sure hardware wise they are the same.

3DMark06 results compared 8800 GT vs GTX

Ok,

I was able to finish up the RMA stuff, and found time to install some software, one of which was 3DMark. Ran a test, with standard settings, in Windows XP SP2 with all the updates.

3DMark05: 17044
3DMark06: 13404

With Vista 64 Ultimate running on a Mac Pro 3.2GHz with GeForce 8800 GTX (latest drivers from nVidia), I get 14242 for 3DMark06 (default settings, default tests).

Interesting that it's only 6% faster than the 8800 GT "RonTheAncient" has. But then we're running different versions of Windows.

So what about heat and noise? Is there any terrible noise coming from the card?

The GeForce 8800 GTX I'm using under Vista 64 has a constant fan at low frequency so it's not obtrusive to me. I measured 50 dB at 12 inches from the back of the Mac Pro.

When I remove it and install the Radeon HD 2600 XT, the level drops to 40 dB.

More 3DMark06 results

We put the Radeon HD 2600 XT back in.

3DMark06 overall rating at default settings:
Radeon HD 2600 XT under Vista 64 = 4894 (from BareFeats)
GeForce 8800 GT under Windows XP = 13404 (from RonTheAncient)
GeForce 8800 GTX under Vista 64 = 14242 (from BareFeats)

Virtually silent, coming from a Zalman cooled P4, this is a big change for me.

Hopefully in the next week or so. But if the reports from the 8800GT boxes come in all favorable (no sleep issues?, low videocard fan noise, etc.), I may pull the trigger before 10.5.2 anyway.

Funny thing, I was going to leave it sleeping last night to test it out, but I forgot and left it in the login window. When I came back, I pressed a key, and all the fans spooled up and the login window came back. I think it went to sleep.

I think I posted a couple pages back that my factory superdrive was a Pioneer DVR-112BK, I bought a Pioneer DVR-115BK (IDE) from NewEgg for $30+shipping. Install was easy and both are in cable select mode.

I too hope they are good and quiet. My current pc has a XFX nvidia 7900GT and the stock cooler on that was so loud, you could hear it downstairs. The closest comparison I could come up with was that it sounded like the toilet was stuck refilling after a flush (you know how that happens) and it makes a constant shhhhhh sound... similar sound and level to that. I replaced it with a Zalman which improved things but this case is still too loud (NZXT Lexa case, beautiful to look at but freaking noisy)

Thats kinda strange. I'm not sure if the cooler on the 7950GT was the same as the 7900 but I cant even hear mine. I've got a pretty basic Foxconn model. Does your cooler on your 7900 look similar to this or is the fan smaller?

Good Lord what system is that designed for? :D

A one that doesnt exist, either that or a HP Blackbird, XPS H2C or XPS 420. Im now tempted to go buy FSX and test it out, but to do that I would have the personal need to install Vista as well, which Squawkbox is not so friendly with.

I don't see you mentioning what speed MP you bought. Please?

2.8Ghz 8-Core
320GB HDD (Western Digital)
2x 500GB HDD (Seagates from NewEgg)
SuperDrive 1: Pioneer DVR-112BK IDE (Factory)
SuperDrive 2: Pioneer DVR-115BK IDE ($30, NewEgg)

So the Geforce 8800 GT is outputting more than 3 times the noise the Radeon HD 2600 XT does.

Granted, it is also at least 3 times better performing.
