The GeForce 8800 GTX I'm using under Vista 64 has a constant fan at low frequency so it's not obtrusive to me. I measured 50 dB at 12 inches from the back of the Mac Pro.

When I remove it and install the Radeon HD 2600 XT, the level drops to 40 dB.

So the Geforce 8800 GT is outputting more than 3 times the noise the Radeon HD 2600 XT does.

Granted, it is also at least 3 times better performing.

2 different cards aren't they:

GeForce 8800 GTX
Geforce 8800 GT

10 dB is a big difference, it's been measured and it's suppose to be double as loud, in psychoacoustic terms

Maybe an odd question, but what can you tell me about the desk I see in the last photo? I'm working on a computer area in my house and am having a devil of a time finding good desk/workspace tables to hold 2 or 3 computers along a wall.

Not odd at all. I had the Mac Pro shipped to my workplace because I could use the resources of a IT office to help setup the Mac. Those desks are extremely sturdy but pricey I think. I believe the manufacturer is StorCase.

That was the GTX he was testing not the GT.
The GT is built with the new 65nm process, so should run cooler and quieter.

Lets see if I can answer everyones questions:

Mark Fletcher: I do have a Rev A Mac Pro handy, but none of them have the X1900, so I dont think they come wired with the extra power cable.

Would it be possible for you test the 8800GT on the Rev A Mac Pro using the 2008 model's PCI-Express power cable?

I know they say the new 8800GT won't work as is in the Rev A's but it would just put to rest any doubt.
