it wasn't able to be fixed, so he got me a new one.

Personally, I don't believe your posts. If they are true, then shame on you. In what world do you think what you did was right? Perhaps the phones wouldn't be so expensive if the return rate was lower. You and your friend have no ethics. If you can't pay, then don't play.

Wah wah wah. I don't care if you don't believe me, I wouldn't waste my time making up a story.

glad you got it resolved. dont listen to that guy. nothing morally wrong. a simple software restore by apple will get that phone back on the refurb market.

And if not it'll get parted out and they'll make the same amount of money off of it as they would otherwise, if not more.

I think this thread has adequately demonstrated that she had a defective phone. There is nothing here that indicates that what she did to the phone caused it to be defective, so the cause of the defect, while unknown, is Apple’s fault. So it is only right she get a new phone.

You may say that jailbreaking a phone is wrong; if so, it doesn’t necessarily follow that Apple’s warranty is void, especially where there is no proof her modifications bricked the phone. That’s just common warranty law.

Although I'd like to hear more details on how this was handled...

It's great you have a working device again! You did nothing wrong. The iPhone failed during the phone call not the Custom Firmware.

This is the truth. The only thing that messed you up is you had the wrong logos.

here's some advise:

3g: $200 plus a 2 year ball & chain

phone insurance: $5 a month

hacking your phone & bricking it: -$600

saying you lost your phone and having it covered with $5 insurance: PRICELESS

They don't offer insurance for the iPhone. If you say you lost it they'd still make you buy another one.

So I thought the phone had the Pineapple logo? How did the store return go? Give us the story.. "I said.." "They said.." and so forth. Come on ! After 5 pages and three days you owe us something.

The phone did have the pineapple logo.

My friend is a genius at an Apple store, and I went in when they were closing and he agreed that it would have happened whether or not I jailbroke it. He replaced the phone for me, and my broken one is being sent back to the company where it'll most likely be parted out or something.

WOW! You are one lucky girl.. +1 for the HAWT voice ;]

I wish I had a friend who worked at the Genius Bar.

Just out of curiosity, you did try just connecting it to itunes and clicking Restore without the DFU mode right? After a phone is pwned it is no longer necessary to put it in DFU mode to put a new firmware on it and in fact, my pwned phone wasn't recognized at all by itunes while in DFU mode.

I've since restored my 3g iphone to normal state. The jailbreak at this point doesn't really have much going for it and the 2.0 firmware by itself is buggy enough. Something is still odd about the whole scenario. I hacked my 2g iphone to hell and back and I never got it to the point where it was unrestorable.

Anything change for you in the last couple of days?

I wished I would have read this thread before I jailbroke my 3G. I thought since macrumors was showing that it had been done successfully that I was safe. I havent gotten any errors yet. my phone just doesnt have service. If you got yours fixed let me know how. If not I thought of taking it back to Att and paying the 10% restocking fee.

breathe.
i jailbroke my 3G successfully.

30minutes of being tense, hoping it would work, dreading if it didnt, and SUCCESS.

epic amazing. :p

now i just have to restore all of the music
:(

1hr to go.

Again the story changes. Go away troll.

Delete this thread -no way; they should make it a sticky.
Incidently I am posting this from a Macbook Pro tethered by wi-fi to my jailbroken iPhone 3G.
Look Ma; no wires!
The net speed tethered is averaging TWICE that I get from my Sprint Expresscard in my MBP at the same location, at 1619 Kbps.

Just one word: WOO-HOO!

Tether link:

...think I'll check into getting that pineapple logo removed tho.

Glad it worked out for you ohhoe.
