I don't know how close they were, but if I knew a good friend and colleague of mine was very ill and had taken a turn for the worse, I wouldn't be at the top of my game either. I'm sure Tim will get the hang of things as time goes on

Agreed. They said Steve knew 2 weeks before that he was very close to the end.. once you watch the keynote after knowing the employees knew he was close.. you understand why some of the key note isn't upbeat as it could have been.

i kind of just skimmed thru most of the replies on here so i may have missed if someone else said this, i haven't watched all of the keynote, but i think some of the lack of emotion may have been that Tim and Phil both knew that Steve might not make it thru the night and they were saddened by this.
