I will be passing on the i4 as well as i5, possibly. I was kicked off of my family plan and forced to get my own a couple of months ago, so I figured if I was going to be spending an exorbitant amount of money every month, might as well be on a phone I liked, so I got the 3gs. It was probably a mistake in retrospect but I really love the little guy, and the iPhone 4 probably wouldn't be worth the hassle of selling it on eBay/inflated price/etc. What I might do, though, is switch to a 2gb cap for my data plan sometime this month (and, possibly, the 1500 msg limit), shaving off a few bucks a month so that my contract renews and I'll be eligible for iPhone 6: the holographic iPhone.

annnd I think we found the reason for this thread lol. The OP would be all over the iphone 4 if he got the fully subsidized price!

nice try convincing yourself of why to keep the 3gs!

So true. Most "I don't like the iPhone 4" or "I don't want the iPhone 4" posts come from people who can't get one right now for whatever reason.

Who's to say we don't one? I want one. It's just not financially advantageous for me to get one right now, though.

I think this is the only iPhone that has undergone a massive makeover both in physical design and hardware, making it totally worth buying.

I skipped the 3Gs because I was not eligible to upgrade. I guess I'm luckier than most because I'm upgrading from the 3G and will appreciate the awesomeness of the iPhone 4 that much more :D

I agree with you more. Not having the 3G S, I will apprichate the i4 much more. Can't wait until 24th!

I'm waiting to see the iPhone 4 in person. I just went to the Apple store to compare my 3G to the 3GS and my 3G clearly has a brighter screen and more vibrant colors (yes, with brightness set equally on both phones). This was the case with every 3GS model compared to my 3G iPhone. Online research shows me this is a common known difference.

Need to see the screen of the iPhone 4 in person. I don't want something less bright and vibrant, which I consider the 3GS screen to be.

Also I feel a 4G iPhone will be released next summer. So while getting to upgrade your phone even if your contract isn't up yet seems awesome at first you may end up regretting it come next summer when a 4G iPhone is available (and perhaps, hopefully, a bigger screen).

There's ALWAYS something bigger and better on the horizon. According to this logic, none of us should ever buy a computer, camera, or anything electronic.

I can respect your CHOICE though.

Huh? You forgot Facechat, not me. Okay, fine, make that 11 new features. That's still not significantly more than 8 new features (forgot the oleophobic coating not found on the 3G's screen) in the predecessor.

"Out of the box " I meant if you install the latest OS on 3G you don't get Voice Control (obviously disabled due to hardware not being good enough in Apple's eyes).

Hey, I'm getting the iPhone 4 too, but let's be fair to the 3GS as it was still a significant upgrade over the 3G despite the same body. I agree the iPhone 4 would be a more significant upgrade relative to the 3GS.

So you get to upgrade the OS, but not include a feature Apple app? Doesn't make sense.

Just remembered another one. Backside illumination sensor.

Personally, I'm glad I skipped the 3GS. The new iPhone is a much more substantial upgrade. The 3GS just didn't offer anything new besides taking video, which I barely use. Now with the A4 chip, the iPhone 4 is even faster than the 3GS! Add to that a longer battery life, the few features added to the 3GS from the 3G, and the ton of features added to the iPhone 4 from the 3GS.....WOW! What a great phone!

You're not making any sense. The 3GS was substantially faster than the 3G (see the other thread how users comment on how painfully slow their 3G is) and had better battery life over its predecessor. The iPhone 4 doesn't offer anything new other than a front camera and everything else is just an evolutionary upgrade (better screen, battery, processor, camera, etc.).

I'd say the 3GS and iPhone 4 are equally substantial over its predecessor in terms of upgrade.

Not exactly. When I see the EVO rocking 4G it should make anyone pause a bit. Yes, I know 4G is not widely available even on the EVO, and I know it's a battery killer, but the point is if you sign on for iPhone 4 you will probably be wishing or wanting to buy a 4G enabled iPhone next summer. I'm also annoyed they didn't increase the screen size.

But at the same time you are right, you can't refrain from getting something because you may want something 12 month later. If the iPhone 4 has a bright screen (I consider the 3GS screen to be dim vs 3G) than I'll probably get it and then deal with the situation at hand when the 4G iPhone comes out. But even if I get the iPhone 4 I will be weary of next year's 4G model which will hopefully have a larger screen.

Well, if next summer, I decide, after doing a cost vs benefit ratio analysis that it is worth for me to get the iPhone...even without the discount...then I will. Life's about choices. It all depends on how badly I want it.

Your approach is rational and adult...something we are not seeing, however, from some of these other posters. The whining is deafening in some of these threads.

The way I see it...It's about today...If I like it, and I feel that the benefits outweigh the costs, I will get it. I will worry about the new iPhone next year because there is always the possibility that I will determine, as I did with the 3GS, that the cost outweighed the benefits and thus bypassed it.

Good luck, bro!

Not quite. don't get ahead of your self. The front still has the same old look as the last 3 years.

If Apple has kept the MBP, MB and iMac looks relatively the same except with some minor changes, I don't see why Apple should completely change the iPhone's looks. The iPhone 4's looks has been pretty much changed with the chrome bezel removed, the sides squared and the entire glass back now flat. The front is what Apple wants to keep to distinguish it from all the other phones out there. All the hands-on previews have stated that iPhone 4 has a much heavier makeover than all the other iterations so far. Get your facts right first before you tell me not to get ahead of myself.

I think it would be a smart move to hold onto next year simply due to the fact that it doesnt support 4G.

Buying it now would be like buying iPhone 1st gen all over again. Next year they will most likely release iphone 4G just like how they released iPhone 3G and those who brought it this year will not have support for 4G.

I'd rather have support for 4G and not use it than not have it when I need it.

4G phone next year is unlikely. AT&T won't be rolling out 4G until 2012, so highly unlikely we'll see a 4G iPhone in 2011. Maybe 2012 :D

What is your purpose of posting this thread? reassurance from other MR members that also want to hide their real reasons why they will not be able to get the iPhone 4.
If the metallic reason is what is preventing you form getting the new one -> develop an iAd and some App, get your the money flowing and stop worrying about the nickels and start enjoying your upgrade and don't worry about what to do when the iPhone 5 comes out.

Not every update is right for every person for a variety of reasons. If not upgrading to the latest iPhone is good for you for WHATEVER reason, then knock yourself out! Don't!
But I have to laugh at some of the lame things I've read here...this phone does this better even though it has a lousy battery, or that phone is better even though the user interface sucks, blah blah blah.
Look, all I can say is that if lousy battery life or a miserable user interface came with the latest iPhone, the people posting here about how they will get phone x or phone y would be posting here instead complaining about the battery life or user interface or whatever else about the latest iPhone. Christ people, it's a freaking phone! If your whole existence on the planet is so tightly tied to what cell phone you use, you have a lot bigger problems than worrying about whether to upgrade or not...

It all comes down to "Can I do a cost effective upgrade?". I skipped the 3GS, even though I was eligible. I didn't feel the cost was worth it when I wasn't really getting that much of an update from my 3G. I knew that there would be another iPhone announced this summer (Historically, new iPhone every year now). My 3G is now ready to be retired to my wife, and the iP4 is a true upgrade. If you can't currently get it due to your update timeline, just wait, don't make us convince you that you are doing the right thing.

Well said.

All the "I'm not getting the iPhone 4, and here's why" posts/threads I have read seem to point to one thing...that the poster, for whatever reason, CANNOT get the iPhone 4, which usually boils down to price.

When I didn't get the 3GS last year, I didn't feel the need to justify my position. In fact, I was HAPPY for my friends who got it.

+2...I was/am in much the same position.

Am going from the 3G to the 4...but I NEVER tried to rationalize my decision by putting down the 3GS.

Is this aimed at me? Um, I'm not putting down the 3GS for any hidden reasons. The difference between the 3G screen and 3GS is quite clear. Also I'm eligible for an upgrade so there goes the argument that I'm making excuses because I am not eligible.

But if that wasn't directed to me I apologize. I will most likely go iPhone 4 once I see the screen in person and hope it's just as bright/nice as my 3G screen.

Not at all, Blair. In fact, you have been one of the most rational posters when it comes to perhaps not going iPhone 4.

It was directed at others, in this and other threads, who seem to have a "The iPhone 4 sucks" philosophy, but when you dig a little, you find they just don't qualify for the upgrade.

My apologies to YOU if you took it that way. That was NOT my intention. Definitely NOT directed at you. :)

Same here. If I had a 3GS I'd personally be less hesitant, however if you guys don't already know, www.gazelle.com is a place that will buy your iPhone. I actually sold my 3G for $112 bucks. They pay for shipping or they ship you a box. Very smooth transition, especially if you have paypal.

If you have a 3GS, they are paying like $201 for 16GB and like $270 for 32GB in good condition. So if you're eligible and you're fine with signing a 2 yr contract again, you could technically upgrade and offset the cost of of your iPhone significantly, in some cases 100%.

Either way, I'm going to enjoy a big upgrade from my 3G.
