We're talking about features unique to the iPhone 4 and 3GS over their predecessors, respectively. Features common to both (such as those found in the iOS 4) don't count for comparison purposes.

Better look at what you said:

With 7 new features for 3GS and 9 new features for iPhone 4 (treating better rear camera with autofocus or flash as one feature, respectively), you're exaggerating the "few features added to the 3GS from 3G" and "tons of features added to the iPhone 4 from 3GS."

I'm saying there are a lot more features added. Steve only covered nine of them. I don't care what device it is. Point still stands. There are more then 9 new features for iPhone 4.

You guys are awesome, always seeing the glass half full sorta thing. My favorites are the ones who tout the fact that the upcoming phone is better than the current model (no, really? More features and everything?)

iPhone 1st gen owners -> 3G : AWESOME! So cool! It looks brand new! Wahoooo! <<same phone w/ gps and different skin>>

iPhone 3G owners -> 3G but NOT eligible for the upgrade: pft lol it's not even cool I mean look it's the same phone (minus the ACTUAL hardware changes under the hood).

iPhone 1st gen owners-> 3G : Wow this phone is so awesome! It's so fast! (sad 3G owners)
<<now>>

iPhone 3G owners -> 4 : This is a much more substantial upgrade cuz' it's got liek a whole new everything. The 3G was a 3G with an on it!

iPhone 3G Owners: MAN I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE iPhone 5G! It's going to do everything that your 4G wont'!

Users who upgrade every year: we just don't give a ****

And OP i'm not hating on you at all. You have balls posting something like this here, but I see you're a new/recent user and i'm posting the above for all the veterens who were around when it was announced that 3G owners would not be offered the 199/299 price to the 3G. Only after that point did the haves (3G buyers) and the have nots (3G upgrade ineligble buyers) started to distance themselves by marginalizing the features of the announced phone, and fantasizing about the unreleased unannounced phone that will walk on water. For instance, the iPhone 4GS/5 will have:
1080...no..2160p resolution.
3 Cameras (Front, Back, and an additional 360 degree camera)
It'll be free
It'll have unlimited data
---I mean just put whatever you want here nobody really knows but we're all just pretending so it's all good :D

ROFLMAO!:D

I think it would be a smart move to hold onto next year simply due to the fact that it doesnt support 4G.

Buying it now would be like buying iPhone 1st gen all over again. Next year they will most likely release iphone 4G just like how they released iPhone 3G and those who brought it this year will not have support for 4G.

I'd rather have support for 4G and not use it than not have it when I need it.

That's beside the point. beamer and I were talking about features of iPhone 4 over 3GS and 3GS over 3G. While there may be more than 9 new features for iPhone 4, they're in the new OS and will be available to both iPhone 4 and 3GS (and many of them to 3G).

The phone's battery will have 2 more hours of talk time. So, I'm not going to talk 7 hours in the day. I have iPad and so my time will be divided between the iPhone and Ipad. So, I think the new iPhone 4 will last about 2 days before I may charge again. My current iPhone is fine, but I want a better screen like my iPad and I like the idea to iChat. I think we will eventually video chat across platform. I like the idea of noise cancellation too!

...and in 2012 there will be another model, followed by another in 2013, etc.

What's your point?

So people should just hold on to their current iPhones for another year JUST IN CASE there is a massive new improvement next year?

If that were the case, NOBODY would EVER buy ANY electronics because there is a planned obsolesence built into each item just based on how technology is moving along.

Yet another example of a person trying to rationalize his bitterness over not being eligible...

I may be fresh here but I've owned iPhones since the 3G. Skipped on the 2G just because, I don't know why.

I just get it every year, just because I like to have the latest and greatest. But, for some reason, I have the odd feeling of not getting it this year. Dunno why.

The 3G came out after the 2G...

So, you've only had the 3G and 3GS...Correct?

...and not eligible for upgrade (subsidized) pricing?

You're confusing iPhone 4 with iOS4.

The 3GS will be able to use iOS4.

I like the way you remove several iPhone 4 software features because they're not "out of the box", yet the 3GS didn't come "out of the box" with iOS 4.

Also iPhone 4 has ten features that meet your requirements:

1. Improved Battery Life
2. Better Rear camera + Flash
3. Front Facing Camera
4. Gyroscope
5. New Processor
6. 4x the resolution
7. All new design, with improved durability, as well as improved signal
8. HD Video at 30 fps
9. Facechat
10. An extra mic for ambient noise cancellation
11. 802.11 b/g/n support

I'd also like to state the quality of each upgrade to the iPhone 4. Voice control? Auto Focus? Minor at best. Facechat....revolutionary.

Make that 11, forgot wireless-n support.

Huh? You forgot Facechat, not me. Okay, fine, make that 11 new features. That's still not significantly more than 8 new features (forgot the oleophobic coating not found on the 3G's screen) in the predecessor.

"Out of the box " I meant if you install the latest OS on 3G you don't get Voice Control (obviously disabled due to hardware not being good enough in Apple's eyes).

Hey, I'm getting the iPhone 4 too, but let's be fair to the 3GS as it was still a significant upgrade over the 3G despite the same body. I agree the iPhone 4 would be a more significant upgrade relative to the 3GS.

well I'm just offering my opinion. I waited a year when iPhone 1st gen came out for iPhone 3G and its all worth it just for that function. Now my friends are complaining they can't use 3G on their iphone and I can.

I'm just saying don't complain when apple release iphone 4G next year and u can't use the 4G network when everyone can in future... unless you are so rich and you gonna buy another one.

Peace

I agree with the OP to an extent.

I've been toying with the idea to upgrade ever since the iPhone 4 was announced but in the end I put things into perspective - it's a damn amazing phone, there's no denying that, and definitely the best iPhone yet. But a lot of the features I, personally, wouldn't make use of.

I have no issues with the 3 megapixel camera in the 3GS, because they're just casual photos and nothing professional for me. I've only used video recording once, and that was just a casual thing when I was out one day. No need for a HD camera or iMovie or anything. The forward facing camera? Taking photos with it would be alright, but stuff like FaceTime... no point when there's only one other person I know that has an iPhone to begin with.

The gyroscope...well, there's only one or two games I really even use the accelerometer for (Super Monkey Ball basically), and I've even turned the 4.0 rotation lock on. I don't see why I'd need another motion sensor when I barely use the first one to begin with.

People could say the new processor is another plus, but in the end 4.0 on the 3GS is working flawlessly for me - it's snappy, it does everything I need it to do, and it does it well.

The screen is probably something I can't really comment on until I see it in person, but I don't have any real issues with the 3GS screen. Sure you can clearly make out the pixels (just like most devices with a screen), but I can still see everything I need to, it doesn't look bad.

802.11 n support... my internet connection isn't even close to being the speed that a 802.11 n router supports, useless for me.

Improved battery life - the 3GS battery has never been a real big issue for me, and 4.0 seems to have improved it a bit for me.

The second mic - kind of useless to me to be honest. I text way more than I make phone calls (in fact, in the 10 and a half months I've had this phone I've only used it for calls for 5 hours and 53 minutes). The main appeal for me when I got this phone was the tethering and the apps - the iPhone 4 doesn't improve on these (obviously the iPhone 4-only apps excluded  )

The features I already have far outweigh the features I want - I'm not going to put money down for a new phone and commit to a new 2-year contract just to get a camera flash, forward facing camera (for photos only, in my case) and for a new-look case.

But basically in the end, it comes down to what the user needs/wants. If I wanted the iPhone 4 then I would upgrade whether I was eligible or not (or buy it outright and unlocked from Apple Australia to avoid recommitting to *shudder* Telstra). Then again, this is coming from the same guy that was perfectly happy with my iPod touch and impulsively bought a 3GS when, earlier that same day, I hadn't intended to.

Why wait?

While you make some good points to make yourself feel better about not upgrading I'd like to point out that you could probably do so for a reasonable price...guilt free. If your not eligible for the intro price your probably eligible for a partial discount which would bring the phone to 400. Just sell your 3GS and you only end up paying 100-200 dollars like the rest of us eligible.

I started getting iPhones at the 3G. Then got the 3GS. Now I'm getting iPhone 4. Next year I'm getting iPhone 5GS HD. Honestly I don't really feel like i have a choice in the matter.

annnd I think we found the reason for this thread lol. The OP would be all over the iphone 4 if he got the fully subsidized price!

nice try convincing yourself of why to keep the 3gs!

Not convincing myself. Just stating reasons. And too late! Already made up my mind and will be getting iPhone4!
