Why would anyone not get the new iPhone if money they get from selling the 3GS would cover the cost of the new one? It's not like the iPhone 4 is worst than the 3GS. Sure there may be features that did not impress you, but overall, it IS a better phone.

You have a point. but the 3Gs will be sold for much less being that its USED.

I also agree with the OP, but I'm also a iPhone 1st Gen user. :p

My reasons for not upgrading from iphone 1 to any 3G models was form factor, and the fact that my phone was still receiving new updates. She's extinct now, and becomes my 2 year old's touch.

I love the squareness and aluminum of the 1st Gen, boy is that sucker durable! I hope the iPhone 4 can contend with the durability part, that's my only worry! As before the iphone launched, I would go through phones every 4 months......eeeek.

But back to the topic, if it still works for you, why upgrade?

Nothing wrong with that. (IMO)

"better than another troll thread about Android rulez!! **** your idevice!"

The 3G was my first iphone.

I bought the 3 GS... twice.... lost one on the drunk bus (before I stopped drinking)

I will be pre-ordering the iPhone 4 by adding a line of service (adding my sponsor/roomate) and getting the discounted price.

The iphone is the only product or device I am secure in buying as it's released.
Do I "need' the new features the I4 has to offer? Probably not. But I sure do want 'em.

I didn't think I would use many of the features or apps that came with 3G or GS. The list keeps growing. Video Chat will be nice when my son's mother gets her I4 for when the other wishes to chat. (He's only 2 so voice calls arent the easiest to comprehend sometimes)

The thing about new hardware is the influx of new apps that shall precede it's release. Like Steve-O said, I too am excited to see what the developers think of and create for the new capabilities.

I jailbroke my 3G.. I held off on my 3GS and am glad I did. I wont be on the I4 either.

Blonde Buddhist.

You're not making any sense. The 3GS was substantially faster than the 3G (see the other thread how users comment on how painfully slow their 3G is) and had better battery life over its predecessor. The iPhone 4 doesn't offer anything new other than a front camera and everything else is just an evolutionary upgrade (better screen, battery, processor, camera, etc.).

I'd say the 3GS and iPhone 4 are equally substantial over its predecessor in terms of upgrade.

Actually, even Apple says the iPhone 4 is the greatest upgrade they've had since the original iPhone. So you can kick the idea that the 3GS was a substantial upgrade out the window.

Let's take a look at the two upgrades:

3G -> 3GS:

Improved Battery Life
New Processor
More Memory
Compass
Video
Improved Camera w/ autofocus

3GS -> iPhone 4

Improved Battery Life
Better Rear camera
Front Facing Camera
Gyroscope
New Processor
4x the resolution
All new design, with improved durability, as well as improved signal
HD Video at 30 fps
Flash for the rear camera
and an extra mic for ambient noise cancellation

The iPhone 4 was basically the 3GS upgrade plus a whole TON of features. The iPhone 4 is substantially faster than the 3GS as well. Take a look at the A4 benchmarks vs the 3GS.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3633/apples-a4-soc-faster-than-snapdragon

So again, I reiterate my point. The 3GS just wasn't a substantial enough upgrade for me at the time. The iPhone 4 adds a ton of great features, beyond just a speed bump. So I will be upgrading this time around.

GREAT post, beamer. Thanks!

I could be wrong, but the iPhone 1 -> iPhone 2 (3G) was almost a worse upgrade than iPhone 2 (3G) to iPhone 3 (3GS), based solely on the fact that the only true upgrade for the first change was the network and the chassis - but performance was the same aside from network loading speeds. The 3GS at least included better hardware and upgraded network speed a bit too.

GREAT post, beamer. Thanks!

And he doesn't even mention the new form factor. The 3GS looked like a 1 year-old phone when it was introduced. The iPhone 4 looks like a completely brand new phone design.

I mentioned it.

"All new design, with improved durability, as well as improved signal"

Mentioned both the form AND the function:D

No one compared the Original -> 3G to the 3G -> 3GS. I got my 3G as my first iPhone, so it wasn't a "is it worth it" situation for me. When the 3GS came out it was. And well, now I see the 3GS really wasn't worth it.

One thing I forgot to mention is the possibility of more memory in the iPhone 4. Personally, I think its unlikely there's 512MB in there, but we can all hope.

I'm skipping 4 also. My upgrade isn't due until 2/2011, so I'm going to just wait until summer 2011 for the iPhone 5. I still have my 3gs and it's in mint condition, plus iOS 4 will give it a nice improvement.

I COMPLETELY forgot my original plan if anyone here remembers my past posts about this.

1) Open new line
2) Cancel current line for ETF of $115 (billing cycle ends on 24, what luck)
3) Total cost is 211+26+120= 357 (400 at most if taxes apply to ETF).

Wow, what a waste of forum space. My bad, I apologize to everyone that wasted their time in here, sorry again. :(

But the thought of keeping the 3GS is still here haha.

I'd dismiss any marketing when doing comparisons like this.

This list is incomplete. You forgot the following:

Better camera (3 megapixels vs. 2 in the 3G), with autofocus and tap to focus
Voice control

I don't know if you've had the original iPhone, but the 3G wasn't a substantial upgrade over the original, with just 3G and A-GPS.

Man almost everyone in this thread is annoying. From the self rationalizations of not upgrading to the new iPhone to the nannynanny-booboos of not getting it. I admit the OP was asking for some criticism for a post no asked him to do, but it's still his choice to buy it or not. Just don't answer if you don't agree and this post would be down the page and we wouldn't have to see it again.

Everyone is going to have their own reasons for upgrading or not upgrading. I don't see why people let others tell them why they should or not. It's your money, you buy what you want. If you don't see a need to and don't want it, then don't get it. If you're excited and want it, then get it. We aren't your parents on here, if you want to upgrade every year, every other year, or every four years no on is stopping you. But if you put up a post as to your reasoning for anything you'll always be subjected to being criticized.

On the other hand, since I really only need the 16 GB version, if I can sell my 32 GB 3GS for more than $199 I'd actually make money upgrading, so it'd be silly not to.

Unless of course they agree with you.

My apologies I forgot the camera upgrade and the autofocus.

The voice control was software, not hardware. It was proven to work on the 3G. I could easily add iMovie to the list of 4G features, but then it'd just get ridiculous.

Regardless of those two, my point holds true. The iPhone 4 upgrade is more significant than the 3GS upgrade, which was simply not enough to justify an upgrade.

BTW, I was never comparing the Original -> 3G to the 3G -> 3GS. I was only commenting on the 3G-> 3GS vs 3GS -> 4.

It won't work out of the box, so it's still a feature.

Fair enough, but re-read what you originally wrote:
Personally, I'm glad I skipped the 3GS. The new iPhone is a much more substantial upgrade. The 3GS just didn't offer anything new besides taking video, which I barely use. Now with the A4 chip, the iPhone 4 is even faster than the 3GS! Add to that a longer battery life, the few features added to the 3GS from the 3G, and the ton of features added to the iPhone 4 from the 3GS.....WOW! What a great phone!

With 7 new features for 3GS and 9 new features for iPhone 4 (treating better rear camera with autofocus or flash as one feature, respectively), you're exaggerating the "few features added to the 3GS from 3G" and "tons of features added to the iPhone 4 from 3GS."

The iPhone 4 has over 100 new features.
Steve didnt have time to cover the 91 others.....

Ok, so then nix iMovies and instead include facechat. It's all software, like I said.

As for the rest of it....what the guy above me said....100 new features if you want to go by number. I was trying to pick out high-quality features only, but if you just want to make lists then chalk the iPhone 4 at over 100.

If I could upgrade for $299 I would totally get the 32gb iPhone 4.

I had the original iPhone. Passed on the 3G, but got the 32gb 3GS for a number of reasons.

Now this time next year I'll be able to get a 64gb iPhone 5! Haha.
