That was just an example of a hardware failure where the iPhone could not be restored. Everyone seems to like to say "It's always restorable if you want to bring it back to Apple..." well, not always. The fact is, it voids your warrantee. I don't give a crap about jailbreaking or not jailbreaking anymore though. I personally, grew out of jailbreaking and with 3.0 fast approaching, I think I'll be more than spoiled with great features that the jailbroken versions can't even touch.

Again, jailbreak doesn't require to replace boot logo.

Correct. It does not, but it's entirely possible that a hardware failure could happen and Apple wouldn't replace your iPhone if they found out it was jailbroken.

What are we talking about, again?

This user Pwned her iPhone and installed the custom boot logo and everything. Then something went wrong with the HARDWARE of the iPhone and it probably wasn't jailbreak-related, but she couldn't exchange her iPhone because of the Pwnapple logo. So, it's still a risk.

what do u mean features that the JB versions can't touch? as soon as 3.0 is JB'd, it will be 3.0 with modded features

i personally don't care if people choose or choose not to JB. i have friends ask me all the time and i just tell them it's definitely worth trying once to see if it's for them. don't like it, restore and go on with life.

for me the biggest plus of JBing is the status notifier/homescreen. i'm a mail junkie and to not be able to see mail notifications does bonkers for me.

with 3.0, i'm getting closer on not "needing" to JB. i credit both apple and the hackers for that. JB'ing has shown what the phone CAN do when it's pushed and Apple is taking the time to implement things we all are hoping for.

anyway just wanted to put my 2 cents since this epic thread will just continue to go on forever :p

This thread will NEVER die!!

As for 3.0 and JB... It's got a LOT of great stuff. Some things I didn't even know I wanted until I saw them, haha. That being said I often use my phone for email and I can't live without Status Notifier on my status bar. I use Mobile Terminal a lot, but I suppose I could always buy a terminal emulator if it really came down to it. Since I don't get status notifier without jailbreak, I do it.

Some people may say, "why bother for one feature?" Why not? It's very easy to do and low risk. I never had an issue with it and iphone-dev has jailbroken everything so far. So yea, why not have the phone I want?

I just got my iPhone 3G S today and the concire(?) asked me to agree not to Jailbreak or Unlock the phone, well I can't find anyone else post it but I seriously don't want them to cancel my service because I jailbroke it I don't need to unlock it I have AT&T anyways so I don't want to unlock it I just want some reassurance that I can jailbreak it so I can rip my Playstation one games and play them! And I've jailbroken my 1st gen iPod Touch and have always been able to restore it I even restored it to get a loan in the pawn shop so if I didn't get it back the person that got it wouldn't have a jailbroken iTouch. Just some reassurance if you please.

I cant believe this thread was resurrected! LOL

I'm at 3.0 and still jailbroken. All the update did for me was make it so I wouldnt have to install as many cydia apps, however I still NEED intelliscreen as I rely on it quite a bit so I dont have to keep opening my calendar. I also really enjoy the status notifier and of course themeing. IMHO, I think that the stock icons and stock phone look is not very professional....so I'd rather keep the ability to have a business/executive look to my phone.
The only way I would ever non-jailbreak would be if all 3 of these things were added.

I've been jailbreaking for nearly as year as well, probably about 5-6 times so far and never had any problems. I know that there are plenty of people here or on the web that would help troubleshoot IF there were ever any problems and I just have enough common sense to restore if I ever had to take it to an Apple store, as well as know that like a computer, there VERY little chance that you could do permanent damage to your phone.

In all seriousness though, a lot of the reason the OP listed to not jailbreak don't really apply anymore.

1.) It's not illegal although it will void the warranty if they find out. I restored my jailbroken phone the other day and had it replaced.

2.) At the making of this thread there only existed the iPhone 2G and 3G. Both ran off of 128MB's of RAM. I'm not surprised they had performance issues, the iPhone 4 runs off of 512 and even the iPhone 3GS functions much more smoothly with 256.

3.) Wanted the latest firmware is a valid reason to not jailbreak. Although to be honest I don't think it's very worth it unless they released a major revision.

4.) You don't necessarily have to reinstall all of your Cydia apps and whatnot. There do exists apps to back all of that up.

5.) I'm not sure if this is a really valid reason on the OP's part or still applies with the newer iPhones. I've personally never really had issues with performance but I'll admit I never jailbroken until the 3GS.

6.) It looks like themes have advanced a lot since the time of this threads creation. All of the stock apps are modified by my theme but I do have plenty of apps from the App store that aren't. I just leave those in folders anyways.

7.) I'll never tire of using BiteSMS, activator, MyWi, Fakeclockup and Safari download manager.

8.) Err, I could live without SBsettings. Kind of silly to assume that everyone jailbroken automatically uses it though. It's somewhat useful for when I need to disable Wifi or enable MiWi.

9.) Maybe back then but honestly, this no longer applies.

10.) Me.com > Login > Find my iPhone > Wipe

Well, since the topic is on the first page now, the main reason I jailbreak now is to actually speed up the phone.
After deleting alot of pre-loaded stuff like Carriers I will never use, Fonts I will never use, LaunchDaemons I find of little use, and Language packages, alongside shadows, (Yes shadows on the iPhone 4 does cause a slight stutter if you open a folder with a page full of apps) has sped up my phone significantly.

I haven't tested how fast it powers up versus a non-jailbroken iPad 1, but it does load apps a hair faster.
Of course the iPad 1 will be faster under the same conditions, but it's just a sentiment of how removing the junk actually does make a difference.

In terms of speed and fluidity of the UI, here how it fares...
1.iPhone 4 (JB'd with removed files)
2.iPad 1 Stock
3.iPhone 4 Stock
4.iPhone 4 (JB'd with removed files and Mobile Substrate add-ons)
5.iPhone 4 (JB'd with removed files MS add-ons and Winterboard)

After I learned how to change everything via iFile (App icons, Springboard strings, etc), I really had no use for Winterboard, which is the biggest slowdown and memory hog, so I just jailbroke and learned how to change everything.

(By the way. I accidentally forgot I had jailbroken my phone one time, and brought it in for a diagnostics at the Apple Store due to a weird glow coming out of the camera lens one time. So the guy took it in, and told me there was no way he could tell if the jailbreak somehow messed with it, or if it was a hardware defect. He kindly said he could restore it in the store and see if that'd help. And it was indeed hardware related. I don't know if I was lucky or what. For those who are worried they might void their warranty, just restore it before you go to the store!)

noob question
Is there ANY(stress) way jailbreaking can brick your device?
Then Why do some sites give disclaimar about harming your device and blah blah........

Great writeup OP!

For me personally my main reason not to JB is lack of interest. I just don't need any of the functionality or apps available when you jb.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

#3 and 4 are the only ones that I agree with, and those don't bother me enough to not JB. As others have said, I've yet to encounter an iPhone that couldn't be restored. If it does break to that extent, chances are apple geniuses wouldn't be able to access the file system.

The rest of the reasons aren't really reasons IMO. If you're careful about what you install, then nothing bad will happen. Maybe I'm okay with not having my hand held because I'm more of a PC guy than a Mac guy (though I do own a Mac)

Well, in the hands of the inexperienced, things can go wrong. Like adding many conflicting apps that might cause the Springboard to crash into Safe Mode all of the time.

Or plainly deleting something vital before backing up them up.

I've made that mistake once where I deleted the wrong thing causing the phone to respring infinitely, but I backed the files, so I simply put it back in.

Otherwise, there's nothing that can really harm it. IMO.
