HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Quoted for DECIET. Wow. I'm going to assume that your statement was in jest because I don't want to believe we have that many dumb people on Macrumors.

Computers, and the iPhone is just that, slow down when more applications are running. JAILBREAKING does NOT slow down your phone. Installing so much there is no virtual memory/page locations left does. Running too many background apps will (only possible when JB'd). Nothing inherant about the process does slow down your phone.

Like I mentioned. My phone is Jailbroken and I keep plenty of free space and don't use any backgrounded apps and don't use Winterboard. I'll put yours side by side with mine any day to prove to you that mine runs just as fast.

If you know nothing of the subject of memory usage and how programs run, don't go here spewing feces around the forums about how "it's proven!!! Look at Youtube where sum nubbie installed a bunch of crap on his phone and it now runs slower!"

Take a class about computer architecture and tell me how jailbreaking a phone (removing a signed software check) would slow anything down. Until then... don't talk.

SUMMARY: Jailbreaking doesn't slow down your phone. It just gives an idiot the power to do that themselves. If you can't handle the power, don't do it. Also, don't complain that jailbreaking lagged your phone. Instead say, "I installed too much junk and now my phone runs slow"

This post alone should have it's own place on the main page of these forums.

Yeah sweet. Everyone says "You have to jailbreak, you don't know what you're missing" but, in order to get the goodies, you have to live with a slower phone. I'm sorry, but what's the point of jailbreaking if you're not going to install the mods like StatusNotifier, Intelliscreen, SBSettings, or Backgrounder?

Oh jeez, where do I start? You can get MMS, biteSMS (let's you forward, delete, use landscape . . .), Snapture (real camera app), Cycorder, qik, PdaNet, xGPS, BossPrefs, NES emulator, yellowsn0w (unlock). Guess how much lag? Maybe a second added to opening apps.

You seem to be listing the apps that slow down the phone on purpose and you're implying that jailbreaking slows it down. Of course those apps will make your phone really slow. Be smart about what you put onto it. Just because things seem cool, doesn't mean they're all that functional.

even if there was lag (which there really isnt).. what is bad lag to you? 5-6 extra seconds? it's certainly not more than 10 extra seconds. but lets say, worst case scenario.. it's 10 seconds.

you're saying that you can't wait 10 extra seconds to have a jailbroken phone with endless opportunities? you can change icons, colors, themes, sounds, SMS, video recording... have gps with turn by turn voice navigation, NES simulators, amazing apps. ughh the possibilies are ridiculous.

but i'm sorry, mr. president... your time is extremely valuable. you can't wait an extra 5-10 seconds to open your text msgs to tell your mommy you'll be home by 10pm from the movies.

god kids... please get a life. if you choose not to jailbreak b/c you like the stock phone better, then that's fine. but dont bitch about the lag, cuz you're just making excuses.

Come on man. In high school, time is money.

??? How does that help get a numerical battery indicator on a non-jailbroken iPhone? Or did i misunderstand what you were saying?

I jailbreak one iPhone, modify com.apple.springboard.plist
Save a backup of that iPhone
Right click on my iPhone 3G in iTunes
Restore from backup
Choose the other iPhone's backup

There, no need to jailbreak my 3G and I get the battery indicator. By the way, I can do this for anything I want to edit in the mobile user's Library folder. You can do this too if you jailbreak, modify the files, restore, then restore to the modified backup, but it would take longer for you and it would be more of a hassle to re-copy all of your music and stuff.

Ah. Gotcha. I'll have to keep this in mind! :D

That's the same effect as editing your jailbroken phone with SSH, by the way. Also:

@lostprophet894

Thanks!

That's what I did. I edited my jailbroken iPhone, but then I simply applied those settings to my non-jailbroken iPhone thus eliminating the need to jailbreak the non-jailbroken phone.

10 seconds x 30 times a day= 300 seconds (5 minutes)
300 seconds x 7 days a week= 2100 seconds (35 minutes)
2100 seconds x 4 weeks in a month= 8400 seconds (140 minutes)

8400 seconds x 12 months in a year= 100,800 seconds (1680 minutes, 28 hours)

I don't know about you, but time is MONEY for me. I for one don't feel like spending over 28 hours a year waiting on my phone.

as I'm not a math major, calculations may be off.

I personally wouldn't wait 5-10 extra seconds for my phone to load something. If I was patient enough for slow software I would still be using my Intel 486. Haha. That being said, this is going on the assumption that you are not multitasking when using a cell phone. Like, on the train, on a bus, eating, talking, or any other task you could be doing while waiting for it to load. Therefor it's not taking up time that would be used for money. Even if it's at work... They don't deduct pay for seconds of cellphone load time. :D

But yea, 10 seconds is way too long to expect a piece of high technology to take.

And...

That's what I did. I edited my jailbroken iPhone, but then I simply applied those settings to my non-jailbroken iPhone thus eliminating the need to jailbreak the non-jailbroken phone.

That's very clever. Haha, I wonder what Apple would say about that?

Status update: Still jailbroken, still no lag. My magical jailbroken iPhone lives on.

I can't believe this thread is still going and going and going and going......

Who hates jailbreaking? I just hate the lag.

I timed my just restored iphone 3g with all the apple apps and then jailbroken with: SBsettings, winterboard, i realsms, categories, findmyi and a bunch of other stuff. there is around a second difference.
1 freaking second but I get:
1. copy and paste,
2. instant brightness access (I watch videos and I like the brightness on max then lower it when I'm done not to drain battery),
3. instant switches for wifi (when the signal is just so crappy u're better off with 3g), bluetooth, turn off autolock (I like to see what's going on while it's charging in a cradle),
4. my calendar items/appointments right on the lock screen!
5. i love iRealSMS quickreply you can reply sms from within any application without having to close it, and I can type in landscape and forward messages and email them to myself or anyone else, insert contact details (like when u need to text someone somebody's number)
6. xGPS
7. Cycorder - my 9 year old sony erricson could record videos...
8. Categories - I can make folders, let's say Games, and I put all my games there, no need to clutter the springboard with 5 pages of stuff, things are way more organized.
9. Notifyer - many people mentioned it, I love it shows me right in the status bar, missed calls, new sms, new emails - my phone is locked with a passcode, it would be a bitch to unlock it all the time to check if I got an email or no
10. Custom sounds - anyone who used Crystal Voice knows what I am talking about, although I removed a bunch of stuff, I kept the one that notify about messages, emails, voicemails. Instead of just a regular sound, my iPhone says: "You have a new email message" or "You have a new voice message" you get the point, very convenient to hear what you actually just got without having to listen to specific sound or the number of vibrates.
10. FINDMYI!!!!!!!- you can track your iphone online period! It gives you the ability to remotely track an iPhone or iTouch. This can be used to keep track of a stolen phone. While a phone is out of your possession, they have features to recover data, track the phone, and lock others out of your phone, disable it with a message on the lockscreen, let's say like: "This phone is being tracked please call this number xxxxxxxxx or return to your nearby precinct to avoid prosecution"

I refuse to believe it's only 1 second with all of that stuff installed. Nice try though...

your unlock screen (as pictured above) will DEFENITELY cause lag alone. That thing looks hideous, not to mention. IKaka, this is a first gen iphone, no? seeing as you only have 59mb left on the entire phone, there's without a doubt in my mind the lag presented from that alone would be unbearable for most of us.

edit: this isn't an ipod touch just modded to look like an iphone.... is it?

To get actual results. You have to restart both iPhones fresh to make sure that they've got the same resources loaded. Then tap and hold the icon on both iPhones for about 1 second before letting go at the same time. This ensures that both apps open at the same exact time since it's easier to let go at the same time than it is to press them at the same time.

Trust me. Just installing Winterboard ALONE creates noticeable lag and it gets worse the longer you leave your iPhone on and I never restart my iPhone (especially un-jailbroken... there's no need).

Edit: By the way... contacts takes 1 second to open for me and as far as SMS goes... the more conversations you have going at once, the longer it's going to take to open. To test this, I opened SMS with a lot of conversations saved... then I cleared them and SMS launched about .5 seconds faster. SMS usually opens in just over a second for me (one-one thousand, two...done)

iRealSMS lunches in 0.2 sec (I can post u a youtube video) when set to background mode and eats only 8mb of ram, I can spare that, I don't notice a lag in any other apps when using background mode. And don't ********, I was using none jailbroken iphone for about a week in between 2.2 and 2.2.1 and dude, it never opened in a second, I waited about 3-4, as always have 7 - 8 or more conversation open and I don't wanna waste my time constantly deleting messages so it would open faster.

a little "tour" of a souped iphone on youtube would be all right. Showing all the different functions, popping in and out of features and apps and what not.

Might convince me to jailbreak my phone.

Must be a fast eater.

Seriously though, that's a completely meaningless example -- it's that quick because it's still technically running, thus there's no startup overhead.

well the question was with speed, so... yea... I enjoy it and my landscape texting

Enjoy it you may, but you can't use it as an indicator of application launch speed, as it's not actually... uh... launching.
