well the question was with speed, so... yea... I enjoy it and my landscape texting

Don't you need to buy credits to run iRealSMS? I remember trying out a few different SMS apps when I was jailbroken and all of them required money or a subscription.

I timed my just restored iphone 3g with all the apple apps and then jailbroken with: SBsettings, winterboard, i realsms, categories, findmyi and a bunch of other stuff. there is around a second difference.
1 freaking second but I get:
1. copy and paste,
2. instant brightness access (I watch videos and I like the brightness on max then lower it when I'm done not to drain battery),
3. instant switches for wifi (when the signal is just so crappy u're better off with 3g), bluetooth, turn off autolock (I like to see what's going on while it's charging in a cradle),
4. my calendar items/appointments right on the lock screen!
5. i love iRealSMS quickreply you can reply sms from within any application without having to close it, and I can type in landscape and forward messages and email them to myself or anyone else, insert contact details (like when u need to text someone somebody's number)
6. xGPS
7. Cycorder - my 9 year old sony erricson could record videos...
8. Categories - I can make folders, let's say Games, and I put all my games there, no need to clutter the springboard with 5 pages of stuff, things are way more organized.
9. Notifyer - many people mentioned it, I love it shows me right in the status bar, missed calls, new sms, new emails - my phone is locked with a passcode, it would be a bitch to unlock it all the time to check if I got an email or no
10. Custom sounds - anyone who used Crystal Voice knows what I am talking about, although I removed a bunch of stuff, I kept the one that notify about messages, emails, voicemails. Instead of just a regular sound, my iPhone says: "You have a new email message" or "You have a new voice message" you get the point, very convenient to hear what you actually just got without having to listen to specific sound or the number of vibrates.
10. FINDMYI!!!!!!!- you can track your iphone online period! It gives you the ability to remotely track an iPhone or iTouch. This can be used to keep track of a stolen phone. While a phone is out of your possession, they have features to recover data, track the phone, and lock others out of your phone, disable it with a message on the lockscreen, let's say like: "This phone is being tracked please call this number xxxxxxxxx or return to your nearby precinct to avoid prosecution"

No lag huh?

Ok... So how can you possibly have that much free memory? I'm assuming that it was talking about RAM. 49MB free? Mine doesn't even have that and I only have Notifier running. No other background processes, I guess MxTube and PDAnet have small ones, both 1 mb each. My free memory is usually around 25mb. What is your total memory?

No, ireal is just another app, pay once and enjoy the upgrades.
I really enjoy ireal.

With 2.2 I would usually run around 15 to 25M routinely.
With 2.2.1 it usually runs with over 35M. with safari, ireal and mail running I am seeing 19M free,

Yea I found out the difference. I was looking in the app SysInfoPlus and I was only counting "free" memory. I downloaded SBsettings to see the difference and it shows me with around 50 or so. I realized it's because it's adding "free" and "inactive" memory together for it's value. So I should be more careful when I compare the ram usage. As it looks, Springboard doesn't take up too much more memory with SBsettings installed. I'll test drive it for a while, but it should be known that it is the type of ap that CAN and WILL have some impact on performance. No matter how small it may be.

Here are my top ten reason to not Jailbreak...

1) It makes it more difficult to take a crap in the toilet

2) I have a hard time getting excited in bed, i don't need to worry about Apple knocking at my front door

3) Blind women think it's jailbroke already

4) My internet foreign supermodel girlfriend thinks I'm Steve Jobs, so I have to maintain appearances

5) I'm worried it would interfere with me logging onto facebook to update my status every 5 minutes
"I just went to the bathroom"
"I just flushed"
"I'm so happy"
"Now I'm Hungry"
"Is there a God?"
"I'm so Sad"
"Ooh Baywatch -Yeah!!!"

6) Rush Limbaugh says jailbreaking supports terrorrism and hopes I fail.

7) I don't own an iphone, I just come here to feel cool. I really have a Zune and drive a Ford Escort "classic edition".

8) I'm still trying to figure out how to activate it in Itunes

9) The genius at the apple store said jailbreaking cause erectile dsyfunction and then told me to "Go Away!!"

10) Because thats how I roll !!!!

By the way.. the usage meter stops working if you restart the SpringBoard or restart the iPhone without turning Airplane Mode on first.

Why does that happen? I always wondered why my usage meter never worked after I JB.

Perhaps someone has already added this to the list of reasons to Jailbreak:

Ability to load your own app without having to pay $99/$299 license fee.

That's actually one of the things I'm excited to do. I'm just to busy to have time to write mine now, but I have a few ideas I'm going to try to code and then, if they are cool enough, put them on Cydia and move it to the App store if it's popular.

Yep. All you need is "ONE" good reason to jailbreak.

Another MacRumors member kindly posted a video of the lag that I was seeing when I installed WinterBoard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEwXAjX6dBc

Thanks dude! By the way... we all knew that WinterBoard causes lag... and how you're saying that your iPhone isn't affected is beyond me.

When I first jailbroke my iPhone, I kinda went overboard with all the themes and hacks and stuff until eventually my phone slowed to a crawl. So I singled out the certain things I really wanted from a jailbreak and kept these:

SBSettings (can't live without it for things like WiFi and Brightness without having to quit the app I'm in), Cycorder, MobileTerminal and MobileFinder.

I uninstalled WinterBoard because I'd rather have speed over good looks. Plus, I could probably d/l it again, pull the icons out of a theme, uninstall WB, and have no lag for the new icons being there.

I only have two themes but i still have alot of lag too. How do you fix that

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G (white): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Get rid of MobileSubstrate. ;)

I was jailbroken for months with winterboard and SBSettings, the lag in opening SMS and popping up the keyboard (what I do most often on this phone) was unbearable after a while

So I uninstalled WB and the only things I had were SBSettings and Categories. I changed some icons by replacing the system files. It was still slower in launching apps.
After restarting it would be snappy - but after browsing the web for a few minutes in safari the sms app opened up much slower than a non-jailbroken iPhone which I compared side by side

I restored without jailbreak and have never experienced the lagginess that I always experienced with jailbreaking - and that's with minimal things installed.

Now that's just wishful thinking. Anything is possible with electronics. I wouldn't have thought a CD-Drive could explode a CD-ROM into 100 pieces, but I've seen THAT happen! It this any less likely than that?

Again, I'm not saying it's likely, but this could happen, in which case the Apple tech will plug it in and that's that.

Did any of the pieces hit the wall and stick? lol, anyways, this is an alright example, but in about 95% of the cases, the cause is a OLD,HALF BROKEN cd.or dvd. So i'm guessing who ever you watched do this, was doing it intentionally and only for show.

On the otherhand..
I am in the 5% that it wasn't the CD. My 1g Ipod touch has a power button that goes in and out(i've finally came to accept this) and when its out i can't do DFU. So yes, not every ipod or iphone is restorable all the time.

PS:Apple is pretty worthless when dealing with repairs and replace, before I JB my pod it did the constant reboot thing, i sent it to apple twice and both times they said " we can't recreate the problem ", LOL the best part was i sent it off making sure it was constantly rebooting, and when i got it back it was rebooting right out of the packaging. So ya, after I got screwd over on crappy hardware, i decided to take it into my own hands and make it atleast halfway useful(the constant reboot still happens to this day, no matter which OS/firmware its using.)

For everyone who's willing to buy another iPhone if something happens, I totally suggest jailbreaking!
It's really hard to argue with this, and I'm surprised people are even trying. I'm willing to buy a new phone, so I take the risk.
It's a tiny, tiny risk, but it's not zero.
What do you suppose is the probability of catastrophic failure (i.e., failure necessitating purchase of a new phone) from jailbreaking?

Last week I decided to jailbreak my iPhone again. I decided to experiment and see what I could do. I wanted to find out what I liked and what I disliked about jailbreaking. I'm not a noob to this stuff though. I've been hacking and jailbreaking since 1.1.1 (I even went through the 47 step manual jailbreak). Here are some thoughts on what I found:

1. Voids your warranty (if something goes wrong and you can't restore, you're screwed). It's not illegal to jailbreak though.
1a. Apparently it's illegal too: http://i.gizmodo.com/5153101/apple-says-jailbreaking-iphones-is-illegal-dammit

2. Certain things cause the iPhone to lag considerably. (last night I had to help my brother uninstall a TON of crap because it took like 7 seconds to open SMS)

3. I want to be able to upgrade to the newest Firmware when it comes out and not have to wait around for the dev-team to come out with another patch. (although they're usually very quick)

4. iTunes backs up all of your purchased applications and preferences, but if you have to restore again, you have to re-install all of your fancy hacks and mods (which can be a pain sometimes)

5. I like to know that if my iPhone is running slow or buggy, it's Apple's fault. (I don't need to be wondering if it's from a third party hack or patch)

6. Besides the slowdown, most themes can make the SpringBoard look crazy cool, but since the majority of the rest of the OS is stock, it doesn't feel like it belongs.

7. I've found that most of the hacks, mods and jailbroken applications are cool at first but quickly get old fast. (this is my opinion... I'm not trying to be a fanboy here, I've tried a lot of things while I was jailbroken)

8. I don't change my settings enough to justify having SBSettings. (I usually just keep everything on... 3G, Wifi, Bluetooh... etc. I used to worry about battery life and stuff until I realized that I hardly ever even put a dent in my battery since I'm always near a computer or charger in the car.)

9. Jailbreaking was fun back in the 1.1.1-1.1.4 days but, with the addition of the App Store, I can find almost everything that the old jailbreaking gave me and more. Apple is slowly loosening their grip on what the developers can do.

10. If someone found my jailbroken iPhone, they could plug it into the computer and instantly gain access to the entire filesystem (even without SSH). I know apps like DiskAid and PhoneView can view and edit the entire filesystem of a jailbroken iPhone over USB. However, if someone wanted my data bad enough, they could just QuickPwn it themselves and have a field day.... so much for passcode locks.

I have a few things I'd like to add in contrast to this list... some nice things about jailbreaking:

1. Customizing SMS tones was cool

2. If a certain icon or graphic in an application didn't look good to me, I could change it.

3. Somehow you're instantly cooler when you have a jailbroken iPhone and you're showing off the extra things to someone who has a regular stock iPhone.

4. Jailbroken (Cydia and Installer) applications are updated as soon as the developer has the update ready. No waiting for approval and waiting weeks for a small bug fix.

5. It's fun if you like to tinker.

These statements are just my opinions... they're not scientific in anyway. These are all based on things I've noticed from having and using a jailbroken iPhone. I'm not a developer, so I don't know how everything works internally.

There you have it. My reasons why I just restored to a stock Apple Firmware ONCE AGAIN. For some reason I always do this. Since 2.0 came out, I've been jailbreaking every few weeks for a little while and then restoring. For some reason, I always think it's going to be cool or better and I like the freshness to cure bordom, but the freshness doesn't last.

What are some things you DON'T like about jailbreaking? I think I touched on just about everything, but I'm sure people can come up with more reasons. What are your thoughts?

Edit: I fixed number 1 to show that jailbreaking is illegal in Apple's eyes.

this list fails you obviously havent jailbroken long enough or fully know about jail breaking to know what your talking about for example

1. plain and simple if you have a problem with your ipod restore it and make sure you have a backup restore point thats recently ready.
2. again dont install everything you see install the stuff you need if its not up to your likeing uninstall it.
3.again your not its just a way to have things that should be there but yet its on other phones and apple does not have for example video recording mms etc.
4.again its a pointless topic and you can actaully back up ur stuff if you know what your doing
5. dont know what your trying to say
6.use catagorize all the apps there aren't icons for use it plus its handy to keep all ur stuff organize i love it.
7. this sounds like ur just killing your own thread.
8. install the stuff you need plain and simple
9. this is true but i would be using summer board for wallpaper i have a ipod touch the 5 dock is nice and there are other nice ones to.
10. the ods of this are like 1,000 to one and you just need to be responsable with your ipod or iphone and dont lose it.

I thought this thread would have died by now. Anyways... I found a perfect example for my #1 reason: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/528280/

This user Pwned her iPhone and installed the custom boot logo and everything. Then something went wrong with the HARDWARE of the iPhone and it probably wasn't jailbreak-related, but she couldn't exchange her iPhone because of the Pwnapple logo. So, it's still a risk.

Your threads never die -- they just multiply.

I'm still curious to get an estimate of the risk of of hardware failure...is it 1%?

Uhh...don't replace boot logo? That's your #1 reason?

That was just an example of a hardware failure where the iPhone could not be restored. Everyone seems to like to say "It's always restorable if you want to bring it back to Apple..." well, not always. The fact is, it voids your warrantee. I don't give a crap about jailbreaking or not jailbreaking anymore though. I personally, grew out of jailbreaking and with 3.0 fast approaching, I think I'll be more than spoiled with great features that the jailbroken versions can't even touch.

Yea, it's going to definitely cut down on the use of Jailbroken apps for me. Of course I will always remain because I use Terminal often... And there is no replacement for MobileTerminal that's worthwhile! :)

Also, if Video Recording is only in the next gen iPhone and not the 3G's, I will still be using Cycorder or finding a patch in Cydia to unlock it.
