Update: after HOURS on the phone with apple and verizon:

--restored phone. no change

--apple ios6 tech has me turning off wifi altogether to measure typical usage, establish a baseline, and then we will try with wifi on. He thinks that the iphone is using LTE even though wifi symbol on.

--verizon is investigating. They are confirming by email tomorrow that I will not be charged for an overage while they are sorting this out.

Frankly, I'd just return it, but I compared speeds on LTE with my wife's ATT,and the verizon is about 3-4x faster!!!

Seems to be specific to Verizon models from what I'm seeing.

Verizon CSR actually sent confirming email. Let's hope this can get sorted fast!!

See, that's the problem. The argument that people would suffer more usage because it's faster doesn't hold any water for some people. I have not streamed ANYTHING and my usual checking of twitter/email/facebook has increased my data usage exponentially. I've gone over my 200mb limit TWICE, when I never have EVER gone over my data plan in the last month. SOMETHING is seriously wrong here.

BTW, ATT LTE, so this isn't something just for VZ

I had the same problem, I reset network settings and it seemed to correct it so far.

Same issue here on Verizon. I was in meetings all day and only used my phone once to check my email for 10 seconds. I have been using my phone for some browsing now that I am at home on my WIFI and it says I have used 92mb of cellular data today. There is just no way!

I just tried something out. I'm on WIFI with my phone plugged into the wall. I reset the cell usage in the settings. After I did that I found a 3 hour video on YouTube (Duke vs. North Carolina soccer on the ACC Digital Network if you want to try it out yourself). I didn't watch it all, but I let it load some and skipped around some. After doing this for maybe 1-2 minutes I went back into my cellular usage in the settings...14MB!?!

Turned it on airplane mode, and did the same exact thing. Cellular usage...0MB.

Something is terribly wrong. And if anyone thinks just the number in the cellular usage is wrong, I just checked my Verizon account online and got dinged last night for 70MB while I was using the Watch ESPN app on WIFI.

Exactly my experience. Same result if you turn off cellular. Something is really messed up. Apple/verizon: H. E. L. P.

Can anyone else test this out for us?

I'm shocked that this thread is only 3 pages. This is a HUGE problem, I think a lot of people are going to be shocked when they see their data usage around bill time.

I am going to contact technical support about this tomorrow, but I'm not really sure who to call Apple or Verizon. At this point it seems like it is definitely Apple's fault as they are the ones who designed the hardware.

Interestingly when I tested with that soccer game on the YouTube app it was 14mb, but when I use the YouTube mobile website to do the same test it only used 142kb of data.

I also ran 12 speed tests over WIFI, and that didn't use any cellular data either.

For those of you using a lot of data, do you frequently use the YouTube app?

EDIT: I deleted and reinstalled the YouTube app, and it has solved the cellular data issue for now. I don't know why this would be the case. The YouTube app installed when I set up my phone from iCloud on Wednesday.

Nope. Twitter, email, Facebook, twitter, safari pages like this, ny times etc. this isn't about me streaming videos or music

Well the facebook app definitely has a cellular leak. Even after deleting it and reinstalling it watching a video over WIFI uses about 2mb of cellular data for a 1 minute video.

Surfing sites on Safari gives me the same result, it accumulates cellular data.

Oddly enough streaming audio on iHeartRadio and Pandora uses no cellular data.

This is only a three page thread because NO ONE who owns an Iphone 5 knows about this yet............UNTIL they receive their bill in the mail next month and have a MASSIVE overage. Then this thread with be 30+ pages long. I knew this was going to happen with the 4G data and Verizon wanting your $$$$. BUT, if they are screwing with the Wifi and everyone can show data leakage while Wifi is on, lawsuits will begin to drop.

On a lighter note, as time goes on prices will get better because of competition. As of right now, 4G is still somewhat new with all the carriers. Right now Verizon has the upper hand because the others aren't at 100% or anywhere near for that matter, with their networks.

I encourage all new iOS 6 users to CHECK THEIR USAGE. I was shocked to see what mine was. Glad I didn't go with iTunes Match !!

I checked. We have 5 iphone 5s on verizon. We keep wifi on at home and use LTE when out.

13 days into billing cycle our 5 iphones used (arording to VW website) a total of 746mb of our 6GB plan.

So I have no clue what everyones problem is. We sync all phones via cable. Also we do not use icloud for anything.

Glad you're not affected. But I only use iCloud for find my iPhone btw. Lots of people are having this problem.

Do you have all location service off under Settings > Privacy?

I have a feeling one of your apps is sending a metric ton of location data.

All are off. Besides, this never happened with my 4s. I'm using exact same apps and settings, but with a huge increase in usage.

I have my iPhone always in wifi.. At work and home. I also have a mifi hotspot that I connect the iPhone to when i commute during the week. Checked my iPhone data usage and its at 450 mb for just the week I've had the 5. I setup the phone as a new device so it didn't copy any data information from my 4S. Normally I use 500mb in a MONTH.

I stream siriusxm during my commute but again, it's using the mifi card's data for that. Don't know how it's possible to use that much data when I'm basically 95% connected via wifi.

NYY Fan, this Red Sox fan and you have one thing in common! ;)

Please call apple to elevate this.

I was shocked last night to see I had used over 1gb since last Friday. I did several tests streaming video and using the speed test app, resetting cell data each time. With 4g LTE and wifi on using the speed test app, it went from 0-8mb! With LTE disabled it used far less, only a few Kb, but still using cell data. So I did a reset of network settings, and it seemed to stop using cell data now, except for a minimal amount used while in sleep mode...only 104 kb overnight. There is definitely a problem, and I will be watching it closely to see if the reset permanently fixes the problem.

Why exactly does resetting network settings do? Having major cellular usage issues since.mocik to iPhone 5 and would like to try this if it might help

Wow. Someone's gonna have to explain this to me in terms I can understand.
To me "it's LTE" does not make sense.
Why would the speed of the signal increase the AMOUNT.

My colleague and I both got IP5s on launch day.

so for one week:
Me AT&T= 150MB
her Verizon 739MB

We work together, and have wifi at work.
We both have Wifi at home.
Similar lifestyles.

Why is Verizon so much higher?

OP I feel your pain

I'm having the exact same issue I talked to Verizon and we agreed to watch it for a week and see if it fixes it self .....I'm over 4gb as of today my iphone said about 2, I've done test and it is using LTE while connected to wifi, only solution has been to turn off cellular....do you think there will be a fix...I hope it's only iOS 6 related somehow

Edit
I also talked to AppleCare they told me the iPhone 5 is designed for LTE and would always choose to use the cellular signal over wifi...I couldn't believe it so gonna deal with this through Verizon
