I am seeing this too, and may have a loose theory: Verizon's billing system.

I upgraded on the 21st on Verizon from an iPhone 4S to the 5. I have the 2gb data plan. I looked at my data usage online on Sunday the 23rd and was surprised to see I had used 900mb, when I had set the phone up as new over wifi and synced my music before going anywhere. This past week though, I am only at 1gb total so it has slowed down.

My theory comes down to the fact my billing cycle starts over on the 22nd of every month. I thought the timing would work out great since I was upgrading on the last day of the cycle. Maybe though, the billing system carried over the data usage from the previous month? What strikes me as odd is that my new bill cut this week and says my upgraded line used exactly 1.000000gb. All the other lines on our plan are precise (like 100.321mb).

Of course may not apply to anyone else, and there is a data leak issue with the iPhone on Verizon. Hopefully not.

I'm having this issue as well but I thought it was from iTunes Match. I used it at the gym for maybe an hour and go dinged with over a gig of data. Needless to say, I turned off the use data option for iTunes Match.

I'm having the exact same issue I talked to Verizon and we agreed to watch it for a week and see if it fixes it self .....I'm over 4gb as of today my iphone said about 2, I've done test and it is using LTE while connected to wifi, only solution has been to turn off cellular....do you think there will be a fix...I hope it's only iOS 6 related somehow

Edit
I also talked to AppleCare they told me the iPhone 5 is designed for LTE and would always choose to use the cellular signal over wifi...I couldn't believe it so gonna deal with this through Verizon

I don't think it's about the phone and Verizon giving different data readings. Mine are pretty close.

In the process of figuring out this problem on my end. I have noticed like others that NEW YouTube app does use LTE data even when the phone is on Wi-Fi. Now the question arises is this a flaw in the YouTube App or iOS6. I have no answer on that.

But I can say that I have looked at my cellular usage so much today, that I can say that I have noticed, that it also has an occasional "data doubling" flaw for the usage counter. IE: I checked and had 50mb usage. I closed the app, put the phone to sleep, picked it up 5 minutes later and checked again and it doubled to 100mb usage, with no apps running in the background.

So in retrospective there appears to be two problems at play at the same time. The phone and/or app lack of ability to transmit on wi-fi as it should by default; and a flawed cellular usage counter subroutine built into iOS.

My thoughts are I can't wait until the next iOS 6.0.1 is released to hopefully fix these issues, and to keep me from having to check my Verizon account usage every several hours, because of the fear of going over my family's shared data plan.

Currently on verizon iPhone 5. i can confirm that using the youtube app even while on wifi caused my iPhone to report additional cellular data usage. So far my iPhone is reporting 1gb of usage in just 1 week of owning the phone, where previously on my 4S and even my 4G galaxy nexus I would barely hit 1gb in an entire month.

My usage pattern over the last two or three years of owning a smartphone has been quite consistent. The only thing I've done more of in the last week is use GPS nav and have run maybe 15-20 speed tests. doesn't seem like it should account for 1gb of data use!

Exactly my thoughts. Will Apple respond ??

I have filed a complaint with the FCC. This is all over the Verizon boards as well, and nobody has issued any sort of statement or even acknowledged that there is a problem:

Everyone, please complain. We are getting screwed. A single web page (NY Times) is showing as a 10-15 mb download! Youtube usage on my wifi is racking up LTE data as well.

i have a 2gb data plan but if i use wifi when in my house will i still recieve texts and does it count towards the 2gb

Right now, see if your cell usage goes up while on wifi. If it does, then you have a problem.

Honestly I won't be surprised that people go over or close to their data allowance with LTE.

Consider, low latency, faster load, means short time for more data, and we know how people are greedy.

As for the phone uses cellular data over WiFi even WiFi is connected, what you can do is turn Cellular Data off in General when connected to WiFi.

iOS 6 has a lot of bugs to work out.

Anyway you should be aware that with LTE you are going to go over your data a LOT faster.

PS I'm not worrying about mine, kept my unlimited plan.

My iPhone's "Cellular Usage" shows I've used 950MB.

When I text Verizon, it shows that I have used only 250 MB. I think there's something wrong with the iPhone displaying the usage, so I'd just go by what your carrier shows.

This.

Activated phone today at 11am. Phone says cellular usage is 1.1GB. VZ App says 512MB. I had 280MB when I walked into the store this am. Downloaded most of my apps over LTE while restoring. I think the phone is off on what it reports.

I notice that when I "wake" my phone the network icon quickly changes from "LTE" to "Wifi".

Now I do not have any crazy data usage. As said b4 my family has 5 iphones and we all use wifi at home. half way into the month we used about 800mb total.

I also did a lot (20 videos) of youtube the other day on wifi and data did not seem to change.

I hope this gets worked out for all of ya.

yea its not just for verizon.
im on att and im have a 2gb cap and in 9 days i somehow used over 1gb.
which i never had. i think ios 6 is causing the wifi cellular leak.. dammit.

Hmmm--I clicked on the link that Apple sent for my ticket, and got a message that it didn't even exist!! I emailed the Apple engineer; let's see what they do...

Apparently used 30mb last night while I was asleep. My phone did download 5 emails, but no attachments. And this was while connected to wifi. Something fishy going on.

Spoke to Verizon about this. In classic fashion, they had even not opened a ticket!!!!:eek:

They opened one today. They did confirm that I won't be charged overrages.

why don't you guys just log in online and check the verizon site instead of relying on your phone? My phone calculates data usage but I'm go off verizonwireless.com

Uh, I HAVE checked with both the vz site and the verizon app. All show that I have used 886 mb in 5 days!!! This is not about incorrect reporting on my iphone usage meter, which is consistent with what vz says.

It uses LTE while it says I am connected to wifi. And the data that it says is being downloaded is ridiculously high--like, 15 mb for a NY times webpage!!

bummer. I've used 1.2Gb so far in 9 days. Good thing I have unlimited :p

I have no idea what you folks are discussing here. I just checked my data usage (LTE via Telus) and I've used a MONSTER 40MB since getting my phone. This includes downloading a 17MB app via cellular, browsing every day, and watching youtube. I also use the phone extensively while at home on my wifi.

So, this was a Verizon only issue? How does something like this get limited to a single carrier?

awesome. i updated my phone - we'll see what happens.

funny thing is though that my phone actually said carrier version 13.1 underneath the blue pop-up box BEFORE i updated. anyone else notice the same thing?

Because it is already installed. Requires a reboot to work though which is what the prompt says.
