I love how so many people come on here all high and mighty about how people "steal" from the poor little carriers by tethering and using a lot of data on unlimited plans, which doen't really cost the carrier anything, and then these greedy carriers turn around and pull these ripoff plans out (under the guise of saving people money) when they KNEW the technology would make people exceed their limits, and THEY CANT EVEN ACCURATELY ACCOUNT FOT THE ACTUAL DATA USAGE. I really hope there is a huge class action lawsuit and the government or FCC or whatever steps in and puts a stop to these RIDICULOUS capped plans.

Just a thought folks.....

Anyone have a Samsung SIII alone with the iphone 4S and iphone 5, that can do a side by side comparison using YouTub to see if there is a difference with data usage and the OS ? Or other comparison to see if it the iOS 6 that is the problem....

awesome. i updated my phone - we'll see what happens.

funny thing is though that my phone actually said carrier version 13.1 underneath the blue pop-up box BEFORE i updated. anyone else notice the same thing?

I downloaded. Let us see if this helps....

Mine did too.

Verizon

I left ATT to Verizon and had two lines with ATT. For the past 18 months, both of the phone lines on ATT rarely averaged more than 1.5GB of data usage for each month.

Since coming to Verizon and before the carrier update, the two lines have used more than 3GBs in just two weeks. I have a total of 8GB on the share everything plan and was alerted that we've used 50% of our data.

I just got off of the phone with Verizon and was told that Verizon has it noted to not charge customers for data overages prior to the carrier update. I asked the representative if this was posted anywhere online, she said no but that they have been told not to charge. She told me she would put a note in my account just to ensure that this was what I was told for my account.

I didn't skim through the thread to see if this was the case for others who prompted Verizon, but I did want to share the information I learned. Cheers.:)

Wow I never realized how much data I used until I saw you post. AT&T iPhone 5 in an LTE area. It has been 6 days and I used 1.4GB. Thank god I still have AT&Ts "unlimited" plan (note the quotes)

ATT 4s updated to ios6. just looking at my bill and I happened to do the update the same day that my data bill rolls over. Says I've used twice my plan (not unlimited) just in the first 4 days since that update. But my iphone (which I reset the usage counter) says I've used 15MB since the update.

I called ATT and they promised to remove the overage charges since I never use that much. I'm calling Apple Care to basically file a complaint over the issue cause clearly something is wacked in the software since I actually did a clean restore and set up as new with the update cause I heard folks were having battery issues with iOS 6 and I have everything cell data turned off. not all of cell data is turned off even

I think we are getting a glimpse in to the actual data amounts our phones use. Mostly hidden and paid for by apple or whomever is gleaning our valuable information.

Everyone knows LTE isn't the same as 3G when it comes to data usage.

It's faster. But a 2MB file doesn't suddenly become 4MB because you are on LTE. Just takes less time to get it.

----------

So, i checked what spiked my data usage. While I was at lunch today, ALL i checked was facebook and look at this:

Image

Would it even make sense that there is a bug with facebook and LTE? Honestly, i am stumped and I know for a fact that only thing I checked was FB at lunch.

I had two of those. both on days when I was at home on my wifi (allegedly) all day. and my iphone was two feet from the router.

----------

quick question, how do you check how much data you have used so far on your iphone 5.

I assume that the iphone 5 has the same usage tracker as the 4s but I wouldn't trust it. Mine says that I've used like 15MB not the 1.9GB ATT says (I'm on the lowest plan on my iphone since I only need it for visual voicemail. everything else is on my ipad)

----------

I'm waiting to talk to apple and verizon.

Supposedly there was a software update for verizon to fix the links. I can't remember if you go to software update or about but it was something in the settings. takes maybe a minute to download then you have to turn off your phone and turn it back on. I'd check for that and do it if it's there and then see if it changes your usage. if not then you can let them know you did it and it didn't do any good. if you do/have and it fixed it, you can still throw that they had to sent it at all as 'its a known issue'

I'm at over 4GB at the moment but simply because WiFi is simply proving to be slow on my 5 even though it's fast on my MacBook. Seems to be a software glitch in the 5 correct? I was reading that several people were having this problem.

So it's official, VWZ says there is new software to fix this. SO ARE WE GETTING REFUND for those bytes we did not intend to use?

Avoid Verizon

The only way to avoid these problems is to avoid all Verizon products and services, especially if you don't have Verizon now or would be adding anything or changing plans. You are asking for a $500-$150=$350 bill (includes internet for about a day, home phone that is a bother and iphone used mostly for phone calls) when you change out of your new plan because they have thrown megabites a day of data usage onto your bill, which never in my life have I used. It has taken 3 months to get the bill down to $227+.

But wait, even though the Verizon retail store owner made a call and quoted the amount to pay, which I did, I was charged A $5 late fee because the amount due quoted to him by Verizon on the phone was 90 cents off. That took weeks to correct. ALL totaling months and dozens of phone calls, emails, trips to the store. Verizon is a rich company, making nothing but misery for its customers which can last for months. Warn everyone you can.

Data Usage Still High after Carrier Update

I've been having extremely high data usage since Friday. I received the Verizon carrier update 13.1 a couple weeks ago and restarted. So when I looked at my usage I was worried and called Verizon. They said it's a known issue and they are working with Apple to fix it. They said any overage charges would be refunded until it's fixed.

So it sounds like there's a second issue not fixed by the carrier update? Hopefully that information is correct and it gets fixed sometime.

Similar problems. I set a bunch of podcasts up for download while on my work wifi. During the download I left work and went home to more wifi. I may have been on LTE for 20 minutes absolute max. The podcasts were still downloading at home. The total size (based on the space used by the podcast app in Settings>General>Usage) of the download was no more than 2 GB, most of which should have been on wifi. Verizon's system is claiming I used more than 5 GB. Not to mention some of my other data usage was when I know I was on wifi. On hold with Verizon now.

----------

Apparently Verizon's system can't add. The text alerts and website claimed I had used a total of 5+ GB. But when they went through the usage details and added everything up it was less than 0.5 GB. It's been noted on my account, and I should not be billed for it. It might just be their excuse though. Just call Verizon if you're having problems, they at least have helpful people working there and are taking responsibility.

I was just looking at my data usage and I apparently used 1 MB about an hour ago. I know I've been on WiFi all day today. This makes no sense. Looking back at other nights on my bill, its the same issue. I had a 20 MB data usage at 11:00 PM, i know with 100% certainty that i was on WiFi that day because I've been watching my data usage aggressively. BTW my phone was randomly freezing a lot so I restored it about 20 mins ago and there was a carrier update available, does that fix this issue?

I have had an iPhone on AT&T since launch. I never went over a gig in any month. I have used half a gig in 2 days with Verizon!! Worse, it uses LTE while I am at home with a rock solid wifi connection. If I turn cellular off altogether I can still see, for example, a YouTube video. But if I leave it on, while still connected with wifi, it sucks data like a vampire. W t f????

And, all day, it leaks data even with no apps running!

H e l p !!

Do you use the Podcast app? I have discovered that on LTE it uses about 10x the data it should. I used over 3.5 GB in the first week having LTE...because I use that app daily. Since I started downloading podcasts and listening to them locally I have used about 200MB in 6 days.

Finished my first month with the iPhone 5. It eats data like a boss.
