chromecast is intriguing at best. its not even close to being ready for prime time yet. my friend who just bought one says that its slow as ***** and that anyone who is used to their electronics being "snappy" will want to pull their hair out while using this. 65% cheaper? sure. 65% less content? sure. 65% slower. possibly. puts the apple to shame? hardly.

It's just another beta Google product.

NFL Sunday Ticket on the Apple TV and I'm all set. I was just about to buy a second Apple TV for the basement. Maybe I'll wait until 9/10.

The Chromecast is a joke even at $35. Good idea if Apple TV/Roku/SmartTvs/Any other streamer didn't exist. Maybe it'll be better in the future so I can get my Amazon Video on my tv unless Apple TV brings it first.

Right now, I am using my Chromecast as a dust cover for my HDMI 2 on the back of my TV. It works great for that!

of course it would be cool if there's something new on the hardware side, but most likely it'll just be Apple TV with 802.11ac.

they have to do something better the ac.

a lot of us use ethernet connection so we wouldn't need ac.

I think it might have a internal storage 256gigs to rent movies/shows and keep them on there

They're going to make it smaller, revamp the interface to make it look more iOS 7-ish, and introduce an app store and SDK for developers.

Cut the cord

I cut the cable cord three years ago and haven't looked back. I own two AppleTV units and couldn't be happier with them, at least as far as the technology. What I don't like is the fact that a lot of the new channels like Disney can only be watched if you have a cable TV provider. Apple needs to declare itself a Cable TV provider and then let us buy the channels we want at a reasonable rate.

Nope.

LOL... Surely just the same old ATV, don't they always get shipments like this prior to a launch since they sell them when new users buy an iphone?

Or what about iPhone shipments disguised as set top box with communications..LOL

I would like it to be true, but it just can't be.

Apple already tried something like that with the original AppleTV. And besides, 256GB of flash memory is expensive! And if they're not going to put that much in their $1000 entry level Macbook, they certainly won't in a $100 streaming box.

I like my Apple TV quite a bit; but adding an App Store would make this thing amazing.

Using an iPhone or iPad as a controller opens a world of possibilities when it comes to iOS gaming. While not looking to compete with XBox and PS4 games, it would certainly do well when it comes to current popular iOS/Android games.

Or better yet, those actual game controllers that iOS7 will support.

I would love to get an apple powered ip tv system and ditch "cable" TV. Please apple. Make it happen. Spend some of those billions to make the impossible possible. No more dvr. No more flipping channels.

Yep. This has gotta be the future. I already ditched Dish, and am strictly AppleTV and Netflix. Can't wait for the day when Apple cuts the deals to make live a la carte TV a reality.

Well to be fair if it's 65% cheaper it still only needs to provide 40% of the function to "put it to shame".
It's not broken it's just been "Value-engineered".

Ahh, but that's the thing, it doesn't provide 40% of the functionality in my opinion.

And if by "value engineered" you mean it requires additonal hardware to do a few tricks with mediocre perfromace and is sold at cost, then yes, you're absolutely right. :)

The headline of the NYT review stated the $35 price in the headline, and mentioned the 3 months free Netflix deal for a net cost of $11. The performance was never the big story here, the price was, if you consider Google giving **** away for free a big story. :)

The Chromecast already does most of what the Apple TV does for a 1/3 of the price.

You're gonna have to define "most".

I think that a good strategy would be the AppleTv combined with an Airport Express for $99. The margin wouldn't be great but it would have the potential to increase market share and make up for the margin with long term usage. It would simplefy setup and usage.

That day could still be quite awhile from now. Cable may be an old dog, but it still has teeth to bite with.
