Io-hd

So, there was hardware released in the form of the IO-HD box but I cannot find it on their site at all. I know it's not out until July but they don't even have a sneak peak thing on their site about it at all...nothing. I'm not a video editor but I wanted to see what it was all about.

The Opening Was All About Editing HD On MBP In SD Size Files

But, but, but......this is video. I can't store a lot of full HD on my Macbook Pro. This is for Mac Pro, XSAN market.
One of the primary parts of the presentation is that now you can. Your post reads like you didn't pay attention to that part. It's near the beginning and it specifically refers to MBP as the way to edit HD in SD Size Files. New external compression hardware for MBP only $3500.  :)

All those incredible editing apps and all they can come out with as an ad for appleTV is some rubbish pan across three rooms...

i wonder when apple will stop annoucing products before they are released. These premature announcements are getting ridiculous.

I wonder when people will stop bitching! Honestly, I've never seen so many people bitch about everything. Its unbelievable!!!

Apple could release a Quad Core 10GHz Mac Pro tomorrow and someone would find something to bitch about still! Can't you people just be happy with what you got? There are people out there who would love to have the equipment some of us have, yet we all bitch because we think we always need to have the latest and greatest all the time when half of us won't even utilize it.

I'm tempted to repost my tissue box....

It's not their box, it's from AJA (still not on the AJA site, though)...here is the vid from the Final Cut section of the Apple site that explains more about it. I'm disappointed that they are pronouncing it "Eye-Oh-Ach-Dee" instead of "Eye - Odd".

Makes one wonder if MacBookPro will be quietly updated on Tuesday along with new Cinema Displays.

Sure, that makes sense. Postpone the event everyone. Apple needs to be ready to ship before they can talk about their next generation post-production software. Do not want to postpone it? OK, Apple has to keep the product on the shelf until next year's conference.

Sometimes Apple is ready to ship, and sometimes not. They seldom fail to deliver. Leopard's recent schedule slide is about the only notable one I recall over the past three years.

The name of the very cool song used in the RED/Final Cut Promo video

Does any one know the name of the very cool song used in the RED/Final Cut Promo video on the Final Cut studio web site?

It's a kind of electronic/piano/moby-kind of song but I'm pretty sure he isn't the artist.

:p Very true. How long do you think they will continue to air this commercial for my guess another few days as well as the new macs ads

Our feed was just too flakey. we had to rely too much on summary statements from our contact rather than transcribing the feed itself like we normally do, so we just pulled the plug. Kudos to Engadget for doing a great job. They beat us out (this time).

Dang those flakey feeds ;)

Geesh.. If you're looking for a MBP updated to the Santa Rosa platform on Tuesday, forget it. The very best you might hope for would be Apple displaying a prototype. Until Intel officially announces pricing and availability, you won't see new Santa Rosa based systems available for purchase from Apple, or any manufacturer.

OT: Narration on FCS 2 movies sound artificial - Leopard Voice?

This is very off topic but is it just me that thinks that the voice of the narrator in the movies sound a bit artifical, we've all heard how good the 'Alex' voice of Leopard is, could this be another?

(Apols to the guy doing the narration if he's real!)

Based on quite a few responses from you, it looks like you're really uptight this afternoon. I did pay attention. In fact, it is the first year in quite a while I am not attending the NAB. But untill now I am not able to edit uncompressed HD on a Macbook Pro, and I will not be till July. And even then, I don't see myself, even with the IO-HD, doing a full production on the Macbook Pro. The unit is really meant to edit HD on location not doing a full production.

I won't be to sure about that...

You could be right, but Intel created to special edition processors for Apple products (Mac Pro 8-core and Apple TV).

I don't know many broadcasters that would work solely on a laptop either. They'd most likely have Mac Pros, and farm out rendering to Xserves or something.

Getting a decent workflow on a laptop is the holy grail for news crews. That's why P2 and XDcam support is so important.

Yep...in other words, YAWNN...no new Macs, no new iPods...really boring for people outside the industry.

Dont forget, this is NAB, not WWDC or the Expo.

One of the big overall points that is being overlooked is the level to which Apple has raised the game with this release. This new Studio package is going to have an impact similar to the one which was caused by the original intruduction of Funal Cut Pro (in fact the VP giving the presentation said as much). Color alone replaces a suite of systems formerly used to "grade" media that cost a few hundered thousand dollars... now Apple has integrated it into the FC Studio.

You could be right, but Intel created to special edition processors for Apple products (Mac Pro 8-core and Apple TV).

There are realistic expectations and unrealistic expectations. Your's are based on the latter. Santa Rosa is a new platform. Neither of those 2 cpus you've cited were new platforms, and the 8-core wasn't developed exclusively for Apple -- Apple just got 1st crack at the (limited) batch.

The last opportunity to go from Academic 4 or any PPC part of Production Studio to FCS 5.1 UB was $199 for a YEAR. You couldn't put it together in a YEAR? Face it, you didn't want to know how to upgrade for these past 8 years and now you can't. This was the end of Academic to Commercial upgrades March 20, 2007.

Thanks for bringing that up, Multimedia! I just realized that my crossgrade from Final Cut 4 Academic to Final Cut Studio is actually the retail version!

Nice. :D

The key to editing on laptop hardware will also be the proxy files avaliable through Final Cut Server. The ability to edit together a project without the huge system overhead of full-res files is a big deal. The ProRes 422 HD format (and its 8:1 compression of full HD) is also a big part of that wow factor, and its integrated into that box but also avaliable inline in the studio for conversions.

This has consumer-level implications in the near future as well, for when Apple looks to increase the quality of video offered through iTunes Store.... the compression quality really is rather amazing.

All the new FCP apps look insane. I don't use any of them, but they look like brilliant updates.

Not disappointed about no Logic Pro... from the rumours it seems like the next version will be a massive jump, so I'd rather Apple take their time to get it right (Logic Pro 7 is still amazing).

Come on get over this one. My Amiga had this spectrum analyser view in a MOD player, back in 1991 or 1992.

It's a standard way of visualising the audio. There is only so many things you can do with it, and have it be useful.
I agree. That way of drawing audio has been around for decades now. It's origins are definitely from 16 bit or even 8 bit computing eras.

This sucks guess i got to go by a windows system now. Hope next time i need a new system it will be after they release some new products just can justify paying premium price for overdue hardware.

holy **** this is an amazing update!

mixed format timelines
prores 422 hd uncompressed codec
4k finishing
5.1 surround sound mixing
3d motion
pro-level color grading
3x hdv encoding in compressor

holy **** this is an amazing update! oh, i said this already :p
