Great, I was waiting for this to buy, and hoping I wouldn't need the Adobe Master Suite for AfterEffects, and now I don't (Design Premium will do fine for me). This upgrade for Motion addresses the things I wanted, and the rest seems sweet too, nice job Apple. :) Seems LiveType is gone and replaced by better text-functions in Motion?

I would like the answer to LiveType as well. I have some 3rd party LiveType add-ins. I would hope they are supported.

hold the phone...

from the system requirements page

An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)

does this mean no more editing on macbooks?? if true....COME ON!!! as a film student i love the ability of being able to edit on my 12 inch ibook on the go. i was going to get a macbook this summer (mbp's are too much money/not as portable). or...does this mean that we're going to see a nice hardware upgrade to the macbook this summer?? is the soon to be gmax3000 going to work? so many questions....

This sucks guess i got to go by a windows system now. Hope next time i need a new system it will be after they release some new products just can justify paying premium price for overdue hardware.

Jeez, will everyone who has claimed they will "..go b(u)y a windows system now.." PLEASE do EXACTLY THAT and stop wingeing in your troll-like fashion, and go post on another forum?

If there is one thing that anoys me more than anything else it's little whiners threatening to get a Windows PC, but who will STILL be hanging around here in months time STILL complaining...

Must be one of the morons who always vote "negative" on every issue.

PS On a different note, still no sign of these new updates on UK store, yet. Wonder why not...????

I kind of expected motion to get the most new features, it's the youngest app in the FCS lineup and it appears to be coming into its own.

Wow sucks to be you. Lots of cool stuff otherwise cant wait to try some of them out.

Suddenly that extra $1500 for the 8 core looks worth it. 100% utilization of compressor on all 8 core resulting in 3X rendering time.

Man I hope they drop down the price of the 8 core Mac Pro this June !! :D

Glad I'm not you mate....you're gonna get slaughtered for posting that here. I suggest anyone else who is going to pipe up about consumer hardware keep a low profile....

It's not really an unreasonable expectation. Apple has been doing more and more Mac updates without a lot of fanfare (and not always on the sacred Tuesday either.) It seemed like a reasonable possibility that they would toss some new consumer products into the store update today, even without announcing them at NAB.

Unless I missed it, there was no reference to how all these new apps were taking advantage of the 64 bits. Or do we need Leopard before that is possible.

As someone once said "rendering of video frames is a highly parallelizable operation"... :p

I'm blown away by everything except for 2 things,
For 1 I was kinda hoping for native HDCAM support since Premiere picked this up.
And DVD studio Pro... No Blu-ray disk support? what the douse?! Coming soon? hopefully

If anything this update has made me lean towards the Red camera even more.

Improved 64-bit support comes with Leopard. Tiger supports 64-bit code, but doesn't have (all) 64-bit libraries or frameworks required for a traditional OS X GUI. However, you can still code a function (that doesn't require a GUI) that provides 64-performance -- a routine that renders video, for example.

Looks like an all around great update... some exciting stuff is about to go mainstream in this space will Apple looking on board with it. :)

new format for iTunes video and AppleTV?

i was just telling someone the other day who was complaining about the lack of HD content on iTunes for AppleTV...

"i bet Apple's working on a new video codec to do HD in much smaller files like they did with the Apple Lossless Codec for audio. when they do that, they can offer HD programming on iTunes for your AppleTV."

couldn't this new codec be used for that?

O boy! Haven't you heard? Apple's Mac hardware is based on Intel processors...the same one's PCs use. The PC you go buy is going to have the same chip as Apple's...unless you buy a PC with lame AMD chip. Obviously you are a clueless t-roll. Sorry Charlie.

Thank you for the explanation. Would that mean that these apps would work better in Leopard, or simply that final products created by Final Cut Studio will run better in Leopard?

Nope.

Sure, that makes sense. Postpone the event everyone. Apple needs to be ready to ship before they can talk about their next generation post-production software. Do not want to postpone it? OK, Apple has to keep the product on the shelf until next year's conference.

Sometimes Apple is ready to ship, and sometimes not. They seldom fail to deliver. Leopard's recent schedule slide is about the only notable one I recall over the past three years.

what in god's name are you talking about? They make the software, they know what's involved in terms of production and packaging time to get it out to the public they have been doing it for years. Why not time it to conicide with the release? Is NAB not at the same time every year? Does apple not know that? If apple announced a product a year before they intended to ship it (iphone aside as they stated their reason) you would be like wtf. The whole point of making new software is for people to use it. And the software is done, which is usually the only hold up.

motion 3 looks great

wow...that`s all i can say.
motion2 was the reason of our company`s sucsses. when it came out, we were one of the few componies who used apple softwares in iran. using these apps and the great maya we bacame a huge compony....

but time changed everything. similar apps came out for pc. suddenly we had to throw away our power pc macs and buy intel based macs. rumors about usa attacking iran made apple compters really expensive here.my personal mac pro cost me about 4000$.the orginal price was 2800$!. company`s lawyer told us we have to switch to pc or we`re dead!
of course we didint listen and spent most of our money buying mac pros. we bought 12 mac pro each one at the price of 4000! we lost LOTS and LOTS of money! it was crazy!
but after all, when i see motion3`s new increadble features i say to my self "we did the right thing!"

... cant wait to get my hands on motion3

This new codec is for editing HD content in very high quality at a datarate comparable to uncompressed SD video: slimmer than uncompressed HD, but way too fat for downloadable. Videos and movies on iTunes are much more heavily compressed, a range where H.264 or MPEG4 is more suited.

From what I've heard, much of the crappy quality of the iTunes video downloads is due to poor source material provided by the studios. Of course, at those file sizes, it will never be DVD quality even with some magical new codec--there's just only so much information that can be lost before it becomes noticeable.
