When I got an iPad 2, I put a screen protector on my old iPad 1, because it became property of my 3 kids. It's lasted quite well. But I HATE using an iPad with a screen protector. Naked glass for me. I've tried a number of different back-plates/covers as well, but always end up naked. Hate adding to the girth. Hate changing the look. Love the straight aluminum back. So, with the "new" 3rd gen iPad, it's naked back, no screen protector, simply a smart-cover for me. Love it!

If I didnt have kids I would use it as it came, no pritector, no cover.

However my 3 year old loves it. I have a gel back cover which is transparent so retains some of its beauty. It is easier to grip as it includes some very small raised dots in its design. It's thin and hopefully would protect the corners from dents and chips in the event of a drop.

So far so good, no disasters. Although the screen protector is looking terrible but I can't bring myself to remove it. I caught my youngest trying to write on the screen with a pen when she was 2, she knows now but something similar could happen.

Naked most of the time, or else the smart cover so I can type on a table or stream video. Smart cover is really a smart idea!

Naked it is! - Smart cover only when out.

It doesn't feel right to buy something beautiful and then hide it in a (more or less) ugly case. Also goes for the iPhone!

I do not care for covers on my iPhone or iPad but a case makes sense. I went with the Targus Hughes case and am quite happy with it.

Using Zerochroma back (built in rotating stand) and smart cover. I take off the smart cover when I am using.

No screen protector.

Fiancè dropped and broke my naked 3rd gen. w/ Smart Cover (Sarah Jessica) last night... She didn't suffer, it was over quickly, but I still won't be case protecting my new one either!

RIP Sarah Jessica... Long live Sarah Michelle!

For me, holding the iPhone or the iPad without any shells or cases feels uncomfortable.

Those devices are so slick that they slide around the table all the time, especially when resting the iPad on my jeans. And the iPhone will slip out way too easily from my jacket pocket if it's not in a rubberized case.

That's why I use the smart cover and a rubberized back shell for the iPad. The smart cover is off often except when I need the iPad to stand up at an angle. But it's just so much more comfortable having the iPad sit in place on my lap when the Artwizz back shell I am using is on. It doesn't feel that slippery and it's way easier to use and type on.

Originally went naked, but the aluminium gets scratched way too easily, like all apple products.

Simple clear skin on the back, with a smart cover. That will do me.

I'm thinking of getting just a skin, maybe from Spigen (http://www.spigen.com/tablets/apple/the-new-ipad/spigen-sgp-ipad-3-3g-wifi-skin-guard-series.html). That way, it retains it's form factor, and still protects the back plate from scratches when placed on tables, etc. I think this is the only compromise I can tolerate.

I'm hating more and more actual cases, and I have Smart Feather from Incipio which is as thin as it'll get.

I think a skin coupled with a Smart Cover (which can be easily detached) should suffice. I could get a cheap sleeve for when throwing the iPad in a bag.

Thanks for all the opinions.

i would love to use my ipad without any covering but i'm too anal about scratching the aluminum. maybe in a year or so when it's lost that shiny new gadget luster...

My iPad 1 had accumulated a few small scratches on the front and several on the back, but I never got any dents.

What I really don't like about the iPad2 and 3, is how pointed and fragile the outer edge of the aluminum is. With my iPad2, I remember bumping it into one or two things fairly lightly resulting in small flat spots on the edge. Didn't take much to dent it. Pretty sure I remember reading that it had a thinner gauge aluminum as well.

I bought a $14 Roo Slim Case on Amazon for my iPad 3. It's a double edge sword, as I'd prefer to use it without a case, but I can't stand watching it get nicked up. And somehow I guess I'd rather protect it by hiding it in a case. Maybe after it loses it's shine I'll start using it naked.

Mine is naked in the back for now. Just ordered a smartcase2 cause I heard it fits. I do have a skinomi to put on still and a smart cover on currently. I carry mine around a lot. And I worry about scratching it.

Naked back until my slow-shipping Gelaskin finally arrives. Using the same setup as my iPad 2: Gelaskin 3M sticker back, SmartCover front (no screen protection), in transit it all goes into a neoprene InCase sleeve.

I do have a Portenzo coming, but after all the bad talk, I'm second-guessing my purchase -- we'll see how it works. I get the feeling I may be doing the same thing for iPad 3 as I did for 2.

It's nice to just have a Gelaskin on the back (makes it not as cold when I'm surfing on the couch -- yes, my iPad back is cold, not roasting) :) And I like being able to just pop off the SmartCover when I'm at home - minimize the weight so I can enjoy reading when I'm lounging about.

I use mine nekkid with the Smart Cover and this Targus Hughes sleeve when I need to transport it. It's the same sleeve as mentioned above, but in black. :D
