Honestly I feel that something should be bought to protect the screen in your bag. I just use a smart cover and it's amazing.

Here's how I do it with my 3; skin from uniqueskins.com and a cheap Khomo case for when it gets thrown in my bag or traveling.

I use the smart cover and then when going out I put the iPad into my Waterfield Designs bag, and that works just fine. I like the feel of the naked back on the iPad and don't want to cover it with anything. I have never had any problems with my earlier iPads in terms of scratches and such, so my system has worked just fine for me.

I'm a little upset at the moment, trying to ease my "OCD" but I've already dented a corner of my naked ipad (only with SC) with my PLASTIC DVR box controller. It's super small (can only see it if you're looking for it) but it just upsets me a bit that my controller (which isn't that heavy at all) was able to dent my ipad on the edge of the corner.

sc?

My iPad's been a lifetime nudist. And it's been dropped from a height of ~3 feet onto tile and wood floors about ... 3 times, has the scratches and nicks and a tiny dent to prove it, but the iPad, especially its screen, is TOUGH

When carrying it in a bag, I just throw it into my foofbag laptop bag thing and go.

No more cases here , love the iPad + smartcover.

Going to add a Smart Feather once our color comes in stock.

i like the smart cover so its easier to hold when walking. if not i feel like the ipad will slip right out of my grasp!

Only thing I use is a Bodyguardz back cover on my iPad. Never had any issues and this is my 3rd iPad

I only use a smartcover for mine. Although I did put one of my Apple stickers over the logo on the back so I don't have to worry about scratching that.

Second on just a smart cover..1 year with the ipad2 no scratches front or back

So my new iPad sports the smart cover and nothing else. It works fine for me

this is exactly what i've done and am doing now. Although, lately I have been thinking about the iCarbons, sticker boy type back skins with the Smart Cover.

The idea of a bulky case does not appeal to me at all. The first iPad has a Switcheasy clear case and that's about as thick as I can take.

I really like using Apple products without covers, but I just can't afford it. Reselling an iPad without scratches is much easier than selling one with.

I resold my mint condition iPad and iPad 2, neither of which was EVER put in a case or had a screen protector or even a smart cover, and I used them both for hours every day for a year.

Naked at home, semi naked in the can at work, covered in public. Oh and I use a smart cover.:)
