Apple designed this phone to be beautiful and feel good in your hand, why would I keep the joy for the next user? are you one of those people who buy a car and put it under a cover every night and don't drive it? it's a freaking phone and you need to grow up. I have had every phone since the very first one and have NEVER used a case. The iPhone is beautiful and you are just killing its looks and feel by smothering it in a piece of plastic. Who cares about $20 resale value, or the slightly increased risk of breakage, I will just fix it. Don't act so pompous, the person below you agrees with me and has more upvotes. /endrant

Who are you speaking to?

after reading this and a few other posts I've decided to take the case off. Just left the screen protector on.

No case, but I'm going to fit a Best Skins Ever screen and rear protector. Naked now and would love to leave it, but I've seen first hand (on my old S4 and 5) that it's not too hard to get light scratches on the screen. My son's iPod5 is scratched too, will be getting it skinned as well.

better looking in a case especially this one

iPhone 3GS: No case at all. Dropped it a few times but no real damage from that. The only damage that occurred was when I nicked the screen against the edge of a brick building when I was running. I had the 3GS in an armband and I was just careless. Interestingly, the only time I had it in a "case" was when I was running with it in the armband, which is when it got damaged.

The nick bothered me so I had the screen replaced locally for $70 and ended up selling it on Craigslist after two years of ownership.

iPhone 4: Used my free Incase Snap, courtesy of antenna-gate, for about a year. Decided to take it off and never looked back. Had the iPhone 4 for another two years case-less (three years total ownership). Only one moderate drop and it landed on its side and flipped over on its back. The glass back had a fair amount of scratches but the glass screen was flawless. Not a single scratch.

I recently sold it on Gazelle, and like someone else said, the difference between "flawless" and "good" was something like $30 (the price of your average case).

iPhone 5s: Deciding to go bareback once again. I did order a wool sleeve on Etsy so that I can safely put the 5s in the outside pocket of my bag along with my keys. I also bought the AppleCare+ as insurance.

If you want something really thin that still provides scratch resistance to sides and back without any bulk, get the Caudabe Veil.

Here it is on my silver phone. I have a Tech Armor screen protector. I also have an Apple black leather case. But in one of the thinnest out there.

Used my slate 5 for awhile with no case. Using thin spigen case this time around on my 5S. I also have the apple red leather case.

You’re a fool if you go naked with this device. The same people that go naked are the same ones complaining about damaged bodies and cracked screens. If your device got damaged with a case than tell us so that we’re better informed. Otherwise if you go naked don’t waste our times with scratch/damage stories on a metal phone.

I use a hard case, light and protects from scuffs and small drops into tables.

No case. No screen cover. Enjoy the phone as intended. I did buy AppleCare+.

I can enjoy my phone the same as you with a case on.

I think people who don't use cases seem to care more about how the phone looks, I only really care about how it performs and it performs the same with a case. Sure, it's a pretty phone. But I'm sorry, it's too pretty to see it get scratched and dinged.

My 5 just has an invisible shield on the back, so I can set it down on hard surfaces without scratching. Naked otherwise..

Same here.

Have a pocket exclusively for the phone and the only time it might get marked would be a dirty work bench. Still perfect after 3 weeks.

Never had a full case, a super slim case for my 4s was only to cover up the silver band. Just use screen protectors for front and back, and be careful with it.

Naked -> since 2007. Went thru all of the iPhones with 0 cases. Same goes with my wife's iPhones.

The only case I got is the bumper for a month during iPhone 4 reign. Hated it. gathered lint on the silicone part of it.

While the leather case is nice. It isn't $40 nice. I'll be returning it and going without a case.

When my phone is all banged up and time comes to sell, I simply make an appointment with a genius in an Apple store, make up some bulls**t excuse as to what is not working (such that they can't refute it), and bang, I walk out with a brand new looking phone.

I know Apple has over $150 billion in the bank and they make a pretty profit on each phone they sell, but I'm gonna play the morality card here...

I deal with having actual OCD (not pop culture OCD where things have to be neat, but the OCD where I have to touch my light switch twenty times).

I spent so much money on cases for my old 4S, and with my 5s, I'll be leaving it out of the case.

All it really takes is a change in thinking.

Once I got into guitars, I started to really like that 'worn' look that guitars get after a lot of good use, especially Telecasters. My Tele has so many scratches where my belt buckle hits into it. I've accidentally hit it into the table while in the studio, banged it a couple of times, and such.

I take care of my stuff. But the metal outside of the iPhone is the case. It's there to protect the internals. If it gets scratched, it's doing it's job.

And as long as you embrace the scratches and stop worrying so much, you'll really enjoy your purchase.

That's not to say that I'm not afraid of shattering the screen, so I bought AppleCare+. The fact of the matter is, most slim cases that people like to buy don't protect the screen from shattering.

If you're into cases to make the phone more comfortable in the hand, then by all means that is an excellent reason to buy a case or two.

But for me, the amount of money that I spent on cases in the two years that I owned my 4S far exceeded what I paid for the AppleCare+ for my 5s. And I like the way the phone looks, and when it does get scratched, it'll be my scratched phone.

Just get a Caudabe Veil and be done with it. Very thin and your phone still looks naked. But at least you have a bit of protection.

The only reason I have a bumper on mine is because I really need to be able to grip the sides. Dropped my naked iPhone 5 4-5x the last year as it slipped out of my hands. I don't care about scuffs on the edges.

The space grey looks so nice naked, every time i take it out of its apple case i wonder why i use a case. I have sold all cases except for the apple and will get the new OB water proof just for surf trips.
Sold a spigen tough armour, atelier pall wallet, ikonic edge sleeve.

What I always worry about is setting it down on unfamiliar surfaces. Like when I go to a restaurant I don't like to set my phone down on the table because I don't know what crumbs or sticky residue is there. I'm not so worried about scratches but I don't want my phone to get gross from that kinda stuff.
