I have worked with aluminum before and in order to get is super shiny (if that's what you want) after sanding it with emery cloth, you need a buffing wheel and paste and it will get shiny.

Looks nice so far.

i think it has potential.

One thing you should do however is make or buy a sanding block so that you only sand in one direction on any one surface. This will make it look infinitely better. Work your way through the grits and finish with as fine a wet and dry emery paper you can find. Then polish.

I did this with an old ipod and it looks pretty good. I don't have a picture which sucks though.

Keep going. They didn't make the motto "Think Different" for no reason!

You should make it look 'brushed'. As in brushed from one side to another.

Chrome looks tacky, I also agree that black powder-coat or anodization is a good choice too.

Definitely. Lots of hate in here, I think it looks pretty slick

Right now, I think it looks horrible. But it's unfinished- so that's expected. I think that once you finish this project, it'll look really nice.

Please post follow-up shots once you're finished.

I hope that you didn't sand over the iSight camera.......

i wouldnt mind that. maybe.. if it wasnt mine :p

Hey.. You can have some fun too!! How about polishing that 27" iMac you have? It'll have a glossy screen and mirrored case.... just don't place it anywhere near the window, you won't want to be responsible for causing some multi-car pileup :p

ok. you polish your MP and ill polish my imac. deal?

I dont ever plan on selling my computer so thats not a problem for me. Screw resale value, if people want to buy a stock computer, many people will sell them a stock computer.
I dont really see how I 'hurt' my macbook pro, it looks different, maybe if it has feelings now it 'feels' like an outcast?

I didnt sand over the iSight. When I was working on the finish the computer was completely disassembled. The only part I didnt remove was the trackpad, I covered it with a few layers of masking tape as I sanded the case around it.

Its back together now, at least until the new year. I cant afford the time to take it apart and do the polishing until after the holidays. I might even have to wait until summer depending on my workload throughout the next term.

Thanks for the advice on polishing alu. I have a bench grinder at home that I can get a buffing wheel to mount to.

Agree with the comment about the brushed aluminum finish. I think a brushed look would look the best and probably be the easiest to do accomplish as all you would need to do is make sure you "brush" in the same direction.

As for the super shiny glossy finish. I personally think its more trouble than its worth. The super shiny finish will take much longer to achieve. Also the slightest nick or scratch will be VERY noticeable. And you will no doubt get tiny scratches and nicks just from everyday use.

If you do decided to finish your project, please post some pictures. would love to see it.

I love the look, but i think it would conflict with keys and trackpad, but that aside, i love it (and may actually wind up doing it myself!)

When you finish, do post pictures!

What a complete and utter vile aberration.

I would throw a fit if someone did that to my BadBoy.
