Saw this thread last night before going to bed. I actually had a nightmare that someone saw this thread and decided to surprise me by doing the same thing to my MBP.

Jesus that's a pretty elitist statement right there, any person on this forum could do this "mod" all you need is super super fine sandpaper, some screw drivers, and access to ifixit.com... Not exactly rocket science really :p

Any idiot can grab sand paper and start roughing stuff up. Its a little harder to do it right and get a good result. This guy tried, at least he had the guts to do it. Theres technique in getting stuff polished, OP obviously got a little excited and sanded too fast with too rough of sand paper. But thats not the hard part, polishing to an even gloss will take much more skill. But i do agree that it doesnt quite look good and needs to be buffed or something.

thinking of doing the same

You know, I've been thinking of doing the same thing for about 6 months now.

I've carried mine around for 3 years in a bag that has a rubber lining, and all the corners are now buffed and shiny. I've been looking for a way to do this, figured maybe buffing it would work. Whoever posted this, thanks I might look for something like that if I ever end up doing this. I've got access to a bench grinder, but I was thinking of doing this with a handheld tool. Maybe I should just go for the bench grinder. Anyone have any thoughts?

Anyway, good luck finishing it, please please post more after you've finished. I know I'm not the only one looking forward to seeing the end result. If I end up getting anywhere with this mod I'll post some pictures.

I would try one of those automotive headlight restorer kits... one that I had from 3M came with a drill attachment and four grades of sandpaper... the finest of which needed to be wet and had a foam pad backing. I used that pad to take scratches out of an iPod touch screen and it was perfect! It even comes with polishing compound... all for less than $15!

I bet those kits could serve as ready-made MBP customization kits!

he definitely needs to start wet sanding, if he was not already
and use very high grit paper. If the surface is rough to the touch, he will need to start with a lower grit paper and work his way up. Once sanded completely smooth to the touch, he will need to polish the aluminum. I would try an buffing wheel or power ball with mother's billet wheel polish or similar.

Here is a thread about polishing billet aluminum wheels on LS1tech.com
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/wheel...-these-damn-ccw-polished-wheels-any-tips.html

Another option is to take the case of the macbook pro to a wheel repair shop that works on high end wheels. They should be able to give the case a high polish. I would imagine it would cost somewhere around $100.

I like it, but only on the older gen MBPs. I like the newer MBPs finish as it is, could use black :D

As for sanding, you need to a wet/dry high grit sand mix to get a good finish and then polish it.

Also, everyone whos having a tantrum, grow up. Its the OP's decision to do this, not yours :p Also, dont go force your opinions on others

Cool looking "Badboy" you've got there. Wonder if anyone has done that to their unibody "Badboy?" Just looking for any reason to use this ridiculous name for an MBP...Badboy. Saw this term used in another thread, wtf

Really?

To the OP, I like the sanded brushed look, but interested to see the final product.

it's different...I kinda like it and at the same time i don't

I'm curious to see how it turns out, it would look nice all shiny.

but I would NEVER do it to mine, you have balls man :D

Pretty cool project. Don't worry about people who think it's stupid. Be meticulous in the polishing and use at least 2500 grit on the final sand. Also, make sure you use a block for the flat surfaces to avoid dips in the Aluminium as it is very VERY soft. If you already know this, awesome.

Good luck!
