Garmin N. America is now 29.99 today only. This is $10 less than navigon and tom tom and as of right now map updates are free. I am seriously considering this app, I have tried navigon and tom tom in the past and like navigon. I wonder how this is.
Downloading it as I type! I hope this app lives up to my expectations. Now I need to find a good car kit...

I finally decided on Navigon last night. I bought the $19.99 regional version and the XL map update which gave me all of North America so that was pretty sweet. The one thing I can't find is the turn by turn route. If you know how to get to it I would appreciate it.

It should be listed under options. Odd, I know.

Edit: Apparently they moved it to that new button on the top right. It's a button with an icon of a winding road with four lines next to it.

When you tap that, you can swipe down the list to get the turn-by-turn list.

Thank you I found it, sheesh what an ordeal LOL. But so far I'm liking it. I was also going to possibly get TomTom when it went on sale but it went on sale today and only for two days so I'll learn to love Navigon :)

It does look very nice though. I did a short test from my house to an address one town away and the first route it showed me was extremely odd but then I noticed the second tab and that one was spot on.

So far pretty happy.

UK Post Code search still not working properly

For UK users, it's disappointing that with such a major revision Navigon didn't fix the UK Post Code search which still does't allow you to enter the house number which makes it pretty useless.

Also, I find the App much slower to start up, taking about 15-20 seconds when the previous version took less than 10. Hardly a deal breaker, I know, but an irritation nonetheless.

But other than that pretty good and the upgraded European maps are great with much better coverage of central and eastern Europe.

I bought Navigon when it first came out and I think I paid $80 or so for the North American version. TomTom was $99 (I think) when it came out. Given a decent stand alone GPS can cost more than that, I really think it's worth new US users to this space to pay the $62 for both Navigon and TomTom and have both at their disposal for the various strengths & weaknesses.

Given the $32 sale price for TomTom, I bit and it's downloading now. I'll give it a go this weekend. Not happy that traffic is $20/year, but I won't let that spoil my overall opinion. My son plays club soccer and Navigon has gotten me to some pretty hard to find locations, so the bar is set pretty high for TomTom.

I had MobileNavigator before v2.0 and the volume level was barely tolerable (too low). Now with version 2.0 they broke it even more> Better have a REAL quiet car, windows rolled up and no noise inside to hear it correctly.

I like the app but after $60 and constant poking and prodding the app to try and get volume I am disgusted.

Yeah, And I was taking a trip and while on the road I noticed it did the 2.0 update. Would not let me into the app until maps were downloaded and you need wi-fi, so I was screwed. Honestly never saw it ask to do the update, or I missed it.
Did you go into Navigon settings in order to increase sound volume ?

BTW, does anyone know how to delete maps ?

has anyone tried to upload route files yet?
With the previous version you could just copy them to a specific file location as *.targets files and they would pop up in the route section.
Now there is a stored routes map on the iphone but the files wont show up in navigon itself.

I really would like that functionality for obvious reasons.

Edit:
Figured it out:
location is now \user\applications\(navigon id number)\documents\storedroutes\

but they're now in .route format.

Just to follow up on my earlier post, I emailed Navigon and got the following response:
".....we would like to inform you that this issue is known and our technical development is working in order to resolve the situation."
Which is an improvement on previous queries when I was told that's the way it's supposed to work!

So hopefully we'll get proper UK Post Code search before too long.

A glimmer of hope! Maybe they'll fix the North American functionality at the same time. At the moment, if an apartment or suite number is included in the street address (very common) Navigon burps and routes to the geocenter of whatever zip code is in the address. Very annoying and at least two apps were invented to intercept the problem externally. Amazing that this problem has been going on for years without a fix --- from a user perspective it is much more important than screen candy and really has been my only major gripe about Navigon.

I have a quick question on freshmaps. Let's say I purchase Navigon now on my iPhone and I don't buy freshmaps.

Then, in one year from now I purchase an iPad and download the already purchased Navigon there. Initially it will have no maps and will need to connect to their server and download. What will happen then? It will download one-year-old maps because it somehow remembers when I had purchased the app? Or will it download the new maps? For the first case, their server would have to keep for ever all previous versions of the maps and control which user gets which version depending on when they bought it.

The same can be extended to setting up your iphone as new or deleting the app and re-downloading. Maps would have to be downloaded again and which maps would they be?

FreshMaps is really poorly marketed. It is really about 2 things:
  1. Guaranteed map update every 3 months for at least 2 years
  2. Adds full USA and Canadian maps for owners of (1) NAVIGON Canada, (2) NAVIGON USA, (3) NAVIGON U.S. Central, (4) NAVIGON U.S. East, and (5) NAVIGON U.S. West
If you do not have FreshMaps, NAVIGON will update maps at "irregular basis", most likely about once a year or so.

If this is so, what is the mechanism of the map update for those who don't purchase freshmaps? App updates through the app store only update the program and there is apparently no way how maps would be updated.

Map update

They'll be an update to Navigon and then you'll need to download the new map. Without Freshmaps, it will only be the maps associated with the Navigon you purchased. I had purchased Navigon US East Coast and Freshmaps was a huge benefit since I essentially got Navigon North America from purchasing them.
